Pregnancy and Body ImageThe connection between body image and eating disorders during pregnancy

by Ilissa-Banhazl

The topic of body image and eating disorders is far from new. It continues to be prevalent in today’s society as about 65 percent of women have a nega-tive view of their body and some form of eating disorder. One area often

overlooked is the connection between body image and eating disorders during pregnancy.Whether women are celebrating their first pregnancy or their fourth, a healthy

body image begins before pregnancy. It’s important to help women build strong self-esteem through a healthy sense of self and body. This includes working on healthy eating, sleeping, and exercise habits in addition to encouraging women to surround themselves with healthy relationships that reinforce positive feelings of self-worth.

As women become pregnant, any existing eating disorder can be amplified and create high-risk situations. In some cases, hospitalization is required. When high risk

cases are identified, it’s important to bring a team together to help from all sides of the situation, including mental and physical health. This may include a psychotherapist, medical doctor, dietitian specializing in eating disorders, and in some cases a psychiatrist.

That’s why we must come alongside women early on to lay the foundation for a sense of self-esteem through healthy habits. Even women who appear to be secure in their body image may experience significant insecurities during pregnancy. It’s a scary and uncertain time. The body goes through many changes, and most women don’t initially understand the effect this can have on not only their body, but how they view themselves as well as their feelings of self worth. Society places pressure on women regarding pregnancy and the growing baby: It’s supposed to be a wonderful time, filled with anticipation and excitement for the new life that is forming.

Yet as women experience changes in their body and weight, they begin to ques-tion their appearance and image. How much will I gain? Will I lose the weight quickly? Will my body be the same after pregnancy? Will I fit back into my jeans? They worry about pregnancy weight appearing in places other than the stomach, breasts dropping, flabby stomach, and varicose veins, wondering if they will ever return to “normal” or have time to “get back in shape” after pregnancy.

It’s important to help women understand that these questions are normal. Through therapy, whether one-on-one or in a group, women can discuss these issues together and learn that they are not alone in these concerns, and that these changes are normal. By educating and helping women understand early on in a pregnancy what to expect, they can approach coping with these changes from a healthier stance. This needs to occur not only during pregnancy, but after.

There are several ways to walk with women through this experience and provide encouragement. It begins by giving them hope; let women know they can handle these

changes, and it begins with awareness of what the body will go through during and after pregnancy. Additionally, this is a time to focus on the baby and the importance of health for both the woman and the baby. Through imagery techniques, you can help women visualize their baby growing through the different stages, and then being born. Encourage them to focus on the positive outcome—a healthy, happy baby.

It’s also important to encourage women to be proud of their new body. En-courage them to show off “the bump” through fashion, select pregnancy clothes that are both comfortable and cute, and get their hair and makeup done so they feel good about their appearance. Most importantly, encourage healthy self-care habits, from continuing existing exercise habits in lighter form or beginning moderate activities like walking, to doing yoga or getting a pregnancy massage. Even simple luxuries like bubble baths, taking a nap, getting a mani-pedi will help women feel relaxed and refreshed

throughout their pregnancy, all of which can also contribute to positive self esteem.Encourage women to avoid situations and stories that reinforce negative images,

such as magazine stories about celebrities quickly getting back into shape after giv-ing birth. Remember, those images are usually Photoshopped. Celebrities have access to trainers, chefs, hair stylists, nannies, and others, creating additional help that many women don’t have during or follow-ing pregnancy. The goal is to build body confidence; help women develop an au-thentic sense of self.

After giving birth, it’s important to continue to reinforce body acceptance. Particularly since women who are de-pressed or have an existing eating disorder may put them at greater risk for postpar-tum depression. Going through a preg-nancy is tough on the body, and it takes time to readjust. In addition, hormones remain high after giving birth, and having a new baby can be overwhelming. That’s why having a care plan in place in advance can help. As they adjust to continued changes, women need to be encouraged to

that are both comfortable and cute, and get their hair and makeup done so they feel good

I will never forget 14 years ago leaving the hospital with my newborn baby and wonder-

ing what on earth I was going to eat! I was so hungry!! After having an emergency C-section and 23 hours of labor, learn-ing how to nurse a newborn and having a 4 day hospital stay, it was time for some real serious food! All I could think about was greasy food and fries! I remember having this amazing cheesesteak sandwich, not once or twice, but several times over the next two weeks. I also remember – very well – sitting up all night wondering why my baby wasn’t nursing, or latching on and when he did finally nurse – why was he then gassy all night long! This is MOTHERHOOD? Wow. Not quite what I had expected.

And so I found myself two weeks later sobbing at the office of my Pedia-trician. I couldn’t carry the baby, I was far too sore. I could barely nurse and I hadn’t slept in 500 years it seemed. I also remember the best words I ever heard someone say and they were “Are you ok?“. She – the pediatrician – who was to care for my new baby – asked if I, was ok. No, I was not ok. I told her about the gassiness, the fussiness and why on earth is my baby not eating and sleeping so soundly.

She did the best thing that has not only happened for me as a mother, but as a newborn photographer 14 years later. She gave me the list. The nursing list of foods to avoid. Not only did this list work, it really worked! I followed it line by line and when I strayed, we were up all night – it was just that simple.

The only thing I could stray from was chocolate from time to time. Toma-toes? Forget it! It just wasn’t worth staying up all night. Pizza is quick to eat, but then when your baby is gassy all night long, somehow that pizza didn’t look too good. Soda – forget it! Dairy – no way!

What did work? Yummy pasta with

oil, wheat bread and light butter, mashed potatoes and amazing steak! All of these things kept me healthy, fed and my baby not only nursing but sleeping better then any baby we had ever met. All of our friends used to comment on how well our babies slept and they still joke that our kids didn’t see the moon for years – be-cause they slept so well!

I tested the list of course. I had to know if it was the food or luck of the day. I was quite convinced as some days my son was perfect – all was well – and other days when I tried to eat berries or gassy vegeta-bles things were a hot mess! So the good news is, we had an easy remedy! It was only about 3 months on this adjusted diet until things were smooth sailing. Little by little I introduced new foods and nursed along the way.

Now 14 years later I pass this list on to every one we meet. This list has made it around the world and goes to every single newborn client before they come to our studio! We ask them to skip the berries, hold the tomatoes and please pass on the Mexican 48 hours before their session!

Does it work? 99% of the time and I have the clients to prove it! Now, every baby is different, yes. In my own experi-ence this list was gold for all 3 of my kids, and when all else failed we loved Gripe Water. My clients tell me over and over it saved them too and they slept much better. Are babies fussy? Of course. Gassy, sure? Will this list work for every baby – no. But it works for some and to me, that’s worth passing it on.

Some people will say they ate any-thing and everything and it didn’t affect their babies. That’s super awesome. It wasn’t the case for me and many times its not the case for many other Mamas. Food has changed over the years and much of it affects us as grownups – now imagine a teeny tiny new digestive system. If nothing else, I ask my clients to eat healthy, take

care of themselves and know their bodies and their babies cues. If you have a grunty, gassy baby, find out why.

For photographers, when I teach them, I encourage them to educate their clients – talk to them and help pass it on.

So…if you are a photographer, pass it on to your clients.

babies at our studio before a session. Whether you are a nursing Mama or formula feeding, we do everything we can to make your baby comfortable; such as swaddling, sushing, white noise and heaters!

We always recommend consulting with your Pediatrician or your Lactician.

We highly suggest if your baby is gassy, to avoid the foods mentioned 48 hours before your session.

If you are a mom – try it, you just might get a good nights sleep!

Being a mother means being a nurturer. Pre-natal yoga provides a set-ting for mothers-to-be to develop nurturing skills by practicing on ourselves, caring for our own physical and emotional health, and for

one another as we prepare for this life-changing experience. Just as we must put on our own oxygen mask in an airplane before helping our children, so can we as mothers practice the loving kindness and empathy required for parenting by developing a lov-ing, patient and flexible attitude toward the myriad of changes that pregnancy brings in our lives.

In our Pre-Natal class at Camarillo Yoga Center, women in various stages of pregnancy arrive and settle in, some attending their very first yoga class (for many, yoga practice begins during pregnancy.) The first part of class is set aside for sharing and support. Some women share feelings of awe in growing another person; others lament their physical challenges and changing emotions. Most feel relief in knowing they aren’t alone in their experiences.

Mothers are then guided into the physical yoga practice, ending with an extended period of relaxation. Throughout the class, the teacher encourages mothers’ connec-tion with their babies and mindfulness of the amazing transformation taking place within their bodies. Among various forms of exercise, physical yoga practice is uniquely suited to pregnancy precisely because of the aspect of mindfulness that includes the baby, instead of exercising despite the fact of pregnancy.

Benefits of Yoga Practice During Pregnancy Include: Strength. Pregnancy brings hormone changes that relax the joints and smooth

muscle. Yoga helps maintain muscle strength to protect the joints and promote good posture, supporting your changing pregnant body. Pregnancy-friendly poses help de-velop strong muscles that are helpful during labor and birth.

Comfort and flexibility. Sharing your body is a new experience! Poses adapted to pregnancy are designed to help alleviate common physical challenges, such as hip and low back discomfort, sciatic nerve pain, difficulty breathing, heartburn, swelling and carpal tunnel symptoms. Safe slow stretching helps alleviate tension that may contribute to discomfort.

Relaxation and coping skills. A key part of any prenatal yoga practice is breath awareness. Many women claim this to be their greatest resource during labor. Breathing practice nourishes your baby and activates the parasympathetic nervous system, thereby reducing fear and tension, which can make for an easier labor. In prenatal yoga, more time is usually spent in savasana – or relaxation at the end of class – than in a traditional yoga class. Guided relaxation and positive affirmations are used as mental preparation for labor.

Body awareness. Women have birthed babies since the beginning of time by listen-ing to their bodies. Through yoga practice, you will identify and respond to discomfort – which becomes helpful during labor, where following your instincts to move becomes a powerful coping mechanism. Prenatal yoga can help you embrace your changing body, trust your ability to birth, and surrender to the process that is, for the most part, beyond your control (another great skill to have dur-ing motherhood!)

A safe form of exercise. Some tradi-tional yoga poses are contraindicated during pregnancy, and a more gentle yoga practice may be best for you and your baby. Experi-enced yogis will learn which poses should be avoided during pregnancy, as well as alternative poses should they continue to partici-pate in a regular yoga class. (Be sure to let any yoga teacher know that you are pregnant!)

Time to connect with your baby. Studies show that stress can negatively impact pregnancy and affect birth outcomes. Taking time each day to focus on simply spend-ing time and relaxing with your baby, while leaving the events of the day aside, can be a wonderful gift for both of your physical and emotional health. Prenatal yoga sets aside time for just this – bringing awareness to the miracle of growing a little person who is very lucky to have you!

Sisterhood. Prenatal yoga classes provide a place to lend and receive support from other women making the same journey. This is a place where slowing down and taking it easy on a more challenging day is comfortable and accepted, and where processing emotions is welcome. Pre-natal yoga is often a place where friendships are formed which continue through birth and into raising children together.

Yoga practice during pregnancy helps you tap into the innate strength and wis-dom your body possesses to grow and bring your baby into the world, regardless of how your birth unfolds. Pre-natal yoga provides a safe place to practice, where slowing down and adapting to your physical changes is part of the process.

In a world where the pregnancy and birth experience can be overwhelmed by technology, interventions and an abundance of information, prenatal yoga offers the opportunity to reconnect with your body and your baby, and to find respite from anxiety or fear. Pre-natal yoga supports you to enjoy a positive pregnancy and birth experience!

H ow can mindfulness training help you as an individual?

Here’s an exercise to try: While driving this week try to become aware of what is going on around you without judgments or other thoughts – no texting, music or cell phone on.

Mindfulness is the process of giving close non-judgmental attention to our experience as it unfolds.

Meditation is a stilling and quieting of the mind – allow-ing one to shape the mind in ways conducive to happiness and well being. There is nothing extraordinary or strange about it.

Mindfulness is not about having unusual or transcendent experiences even though they may occur. Any kind of experi-ence imaginable is possible and they are neither the goal nor your business (like gossip in either side of the brain – ignore it). Mindfulness and meditation can teach us to be patient but we have to be willing to show up day after day during our impatience in order to become patient.

Being alone with your thoughts is frightening for many people.

Meditation helps us to develop genuine compassion and wisdom. Wisdom is seeing things clearly and recognizing our life with the lives of others and seeing our interdependence with others evokes compassion.

Many people judge their meditation as a failure. You can neither fail nor succeed. All you can do is do it.

What preconceptions do you bring to the practice of meditation? Maybe is something like meditation encouraged in your philosophy or faith or religion?

In mindfulness as in meditation you will learn to train your mind to focus on an object, your breath, a mantra an activ-ity. It is all about awareness and focus and ultimately the stillness.

After practicing mindfulness and then meditation you will learn to relinquish your cravings and need for constant stimula-tion. You will be able to simply pay attention to what is with no judgment. You can always turn your attention to your breath.

Success in both mindfulness and meditation is persis-tence. The definition of success in this area is showing up for 20 minutes 2 x daily and focusing on your breath and eventually on your mantra.

In mindfulness our intention is to look, notice, be aware of whatever muddies the waters of our mind. You will then learn to transfer this ability to your life. Oftentimes when problems arise all we have to do is to observe, and learn.

A Mindful Pregnancy App on iPhone can be found at www.leclairemethod.com

BeliefMy mind is too busy. I have

a constant “Monkey Mind” There is no way I can succeed at mindful-ness or meditation.

Healthy BeliefAll humans have busy

minds. The only definition of success in mindfulness and/or meditation is to show up and prac-tice the techniques you will have learned. At some point, perhaps immediately, perhaps in 10 years or more, you will still your mind using the techniques you have been practicing. Just the prac-tice of “sitting” for 20 minutes 2 x daily will be healing for your mind, body and spirit and for those around you.

AffirmationAt some point in my life

there were many things I could not do. I could not read, I could not write, I could not speak, I could not ride a bike.

With practice I learned how to do all of this. Mindfulness and meditation are no different. All I have to do is be willing to begin the practice.

Plan of ActionSince I don’t want to set

myself up for failure I will begin by brushing my teeth mindfully once a week. I will gradually Increase this to once daily. At some point while sitting still I will focus on my breathing for 5 minutes once a week. Eventually I will do this dai-ly. When I feel ready I will begin my mantra meditation schedule. I will meditate 20 minutes once a week until I am meditating 2 x daily at least 5 days a week. I will write out a weekly schedule for myself surrounding mindfulness and meditation.

Plan of Action(Continued)I will be gentle with myself.

I will give myself the gift of being mindful and meditating. I will make my weekly goals easier to meet than not to meet. If I for-get to do what I have scheduled, I will not chastise myself. I will just return mindfully to my goals.

“Bringing Peace to the World one Mind at a Time.”

The following article summaries are relevant to expectant, new and more experienced parents, families & friends. They are intended to sharpen your understanding of safety risks as they exist or can be anticipated.

Save A Little Life is now 15 years old! With all of the changes and modifications in CPR education, we remain steadfast in our promise that all parents, family friends and employees will learn these skills with us. Our programs are located in a wide area across the L.A. and S.F. Valley area.

All the best,Richard Pass, RN,BSDirector, Save A Little Life, inc.

Richard Pass, RN,BS is the founder of “Save A Little Life” inc., a local provider of both CPR and First-aid for infants & children. He has been a Registered Nurse & Health Educator for over 30 years. He is on staff at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles and is currently a part-time clinical instructor of nursing at California State University, Northridge. The goal for Save a Little Life is to provide a simpler, more “user friendly” CPR course.

Orange County has been hit with an outbreak in measles and according to the L.A. Time article on 4-5-14 this is the largest in the state. There were 22 new measles cases reported which doubled over the previous two weeks.

Orange County (O.C.) parents tend to opt-out at about the same rate as other California counties when it comes to vaccinations for infants & children. What remains puzzling is the fact that these parents come from more affluent communities in the county.

Dr. Matt Zahn, director of epidemiology for the O.C. Health Care Agency had this to say about the rise in measles cases: “We know that there is a vigorous anti-vaccine movement in this country. So events like this are difficult, but they’re important to highlight because we want to make sure people realize that there is a reason that you need to get your child vaccinated.”

Measles is a highly contagious disease and can be prevented with the MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccine. Dr. Zahn emphasized “ the outbreak that is going on in our community is weighted toward kids who have not been immunized.”

Swaddling Risks for infants ?

Swaddling of in-fants has a long history and is multi-culturally popular worldwide. Many professionals the field of newborn and infant health endorse swaddling as a means of settling and soothing ir-ritable infants. Many feel

that it helps infants sleep longer with fewer awakenings.A current Medscape article reviewed a retrospective study of swaddling incidents

which were voluntarily reported to the Consumer Products Safety Commission (cpsc.gov) from 2004 to 2011. This information looked at demographic issues on infant positioning, type and mechanism of injury or potential injury, cause of death when applicable, and presence of known SIDS risk factors.

The information made available to the CPSC includes incidents involving 36 infants ranging in age from 3 days to 15 months including:

• 5 cases involving wearable blankets (1 death, 2 injuries, 2 potential injuries).

• 18 cases involving swaddle wraps (8 deaths and 10 potential injuries)

• 1 death involving an unspecified product (either swaddle wrap or wearable blanket)

• 12 deaths involving swaddling in ordinary blanketsIn cases where infant deaths were reported, 7 out of 10 were swaddled in wearable

swaddles (our emphasis) and placed in a routing supine (back sleeping) position. How-ever, these infants managed to roll over into a prone (face down) position and one did so as early as 5 weeks of age. The death was reported as “positional asphyxia.” The other 6 fatalities were swaddled in non-wearable blankets and died in a similar fashion.

Other factors mentioned in the reports were:

• Hyperthermia from over-bundling in an already warm atmosphere

• The use of soft bedding not suitable for infant safety

• Extra blankets, bumper pads, comforters, stuffed animals in the immediate area of the infant’s face and bed sharing with adults.

• Second hand smoke was also mentioned as a risk factor - something well known as a SIDS contributor.Another issue arising from this study was the increased health risk when infants

are swaddled in wearable items designed for this purpose. These types are sold in stores and use glove-like openings for arms and/or legs.

Save A Little Life strongly encourages parents to discuss swaddling with their pediatric M.D.’s to assure that any risks, however small, are fully understood.

Article appears on Medscape: Death from Swaddling: A retrospective Study of Swaddling Deaths and injuries.

Unsettling Measles Outbreak

Sends Clear Message

E-Cigarette-Related Poison Center Calls SurgeA recent and disturbing report form the Centers for Disease Control and Pre-

vention (CDC) reveal a surge in calls to local and national poison control centers from nicotine toxicity in pediatric victims.

“This report raises another red flag about e-cigarettes - the liquid nicotine used in e-cigarettes can be hazardous” states CDC Director Tom Frieden, MD. In a CDC press release he noted: “E-cigarette liquid as currently sold are a threat to small children because they are not required to be childproof and they come in candy and fruit fla-vors that are appealing to children.” Just over half (51.1%) of these e-cigarette calls involve children 5 years and younger, this report stated. Toxic ingestion can come from oral ingestion, inhalation or absorption through the skin or eyes. Nearly 70% of these poisonings were from oral ingestion.

Dr. Tim McAfee (MD,MPH), director of the CDC’s Office on Smoking and Health noted a distinct increase in e-cigarette poisonings as the use of this product has continued to grow.

Steady Increase in Home Births Reported NationallyThe U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has noted a size-

able increase in home birthing decisions by new parents. In 2004, the rate of home births was 0.87 %. By the end of 2012, this percentage rose to 1.36 %. T.J. Mathews, a demographer for the CDC stated…. “That’s a pretty good jump and has been trending upward since 2004.”

Midwife Lynn Johnson, midwife and administrator of Women’s and Children’s Services at Huntington Hospital in New York, told Medline Plus… “more people are talking about midwifery birth and having their experience as they would like to have it.” She added, “some women worry about losing their autonomy and having a doctor call the shots during delivery.”

The CDC study also reported that births outside the hospital carried a lower “risk profile” in 2012. This includes a smaller proportion of preterm and low birth weight babies than in hospital delivery rooms.

Other findings conflict with this CDC statement. A recent Cornell University study found the risk of a baby dying is nearly four times higher when delivered by a midwife at home than by a midwife at a hospital.

Dr. James Byrne, Chair of OB/Gyn for Santa Clara Valley Medical Center and clinical professor at Stanford University strongly agrees with the need for parents to discuss delivery options with both your M.D. and midwife as there are known risk factors that make a home birth more statistically troubling. The categories referred to include teen births as well as multiple births.

Dr. JoBea Holt www.babysdayout.net

Dr. JoBea Holt was a research scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory from 1976 through 1999 where she studied climate change in arctic forests using satellites and the Space Shuttle. She received her Bachelor’s degree from UC Berkeley, and her Ph.D. from Caltech in Planetary Science. In 1999, JoBea left JPL to raise her two children. She is an active leader in Girl Scouts and Cub Scouts, is on the board of her children’s Little League organization, and is currently a member of Al Gore’s Climate Project. Her first non-NASA book, Baby’s Day Out in Southern California, was released in 2003 and again in 2006. (Published by Gem Guides Co.) It is a travel guide to help moms and dads find more adventures for baby. Her most recent book is Climate Moms, an iBook. Her website is www.climatemoms.com.

W hen my children were babies, people kept suggesting we visit the Los Angeles Arboretum. I smiled and thanked them for their advice, and then filed that idea under “adventures for older children”. Babies surely do not care much about trees. Then one day we went to the arboretum, and guess what. It isn’t about the trees. It’s about the ducks.

The arboretum is one of several ponds and lakes in Southern California that are home to immense populations of mallard ducks – the same ones that waddle through Make Way for Ducklings. And the ducks are definitely friendly – especially if you happen to drop a few Cheerios in their path. After a nice visit with the ducks, it is time for lunch. The Peacock Café offers two important items that make lunch with baby delightful – grilled cheese sandwiches and peacocks. The peacocks and peahens love to hang around the outdoor tables hoping for a scrap of food, so you get an up-close-and-personal experience.

Baldwin Pond at the Los Angeles Arboretum is definitely one of the most pleasant and accessible duck hangouts in Southern California, but there are others. Descanso Gardens, the South Coast Botanical Gardens, Puddingstone Lake, Lake Balboa and the Santa Fe Reservoir all have friendly populations of our feathered friends. It doesn’t take long to figure out that where there are mallards, there are likely to be Canada Geese, and perhaps a few coots. It also doesn’t take long to figure out that among the great numbers of ducks and geese, there are the occasional odd birds, the kind with names you can never remember. These include the Great Heron, the Kingfisher and the Snowy Egret, among others. You might think about getting a bird book like Birds of Los Angeles or Audubon First Field Guide: Birds. Or better yet, a bird guide like Mac’s Field Guide to California Coastal Birds that can live in your diaper bag.

If your baby enjoys the sand, it is easy to attract sea gulls at any beach. In the distance, you may also notice a graceful Brown Pelican diving for fish. These pelicans were once endangered due to DDT in the ocean being absorbed by fish that were then eaten by the pelicans. The ingested DDT resulted in eggs with very thin shells. Fortunately, the pelicans are making a comeback and are regular visitors along the shore.

If you want to find more birds that enjoy the seashore, take a stroll (with your stroller) along the paths in the Bolsa Chica Wetlands. Bolsa Chica is a protected salt marsh, or estuary, where the river meets the ocean, and is home to a great variety of birds. The wetlands are what are left of a much larger area that has shrunk over time – notice the oil pumps around the reserve. Nearly half of the birds found in the U.S. have been seen in the Bolsa Chica area. You may spot a Black Necked Stilt, a Western Snowy Plover, or

a Common Loon, which, in toddler terms, are a black and white bird, a fat little bird, and a brown, white and black bird.

You might also visit the Audubon Center at Debs Park where you will find family nature hikes and a nature center where you can check out a little back-pack with a magnifying glass, an insect net and water color paints. There are a variety of paths through na-tive California woodland where you might see mead-owlarks, sparrows, hawks or kingbirds. Look for the new Hummingbird Garden - my daughter planted it for her Gold Girl Scout Project. You can get a list of the plants that attract hummingbirds in the office and encourage these hungry birds to visit your home!

And if you happen to be at the Los Angeles Zoo, don’t miss the World of Birds Show where birds of prey and exotic birds perform on stage and in the air for you. It will surely make you laugh, shriek and clap – sometimes all at the same time.

Finally there are the neighborhood birds. If you hear a tap tap tap, look for a woodpecker – especially silhouetted on a palm tree trunk. If you hear a scolding caaw, look for the crows that travel in ‘murders’ (flocks), or a scrub jay that seems to always be upset with something. And if you hear a loud ruckus, it is probably the parrots. No one seems to know exactly where these noisy birds came from, but one idea is they were released from a plant nursery when it burned down in 1959. And at night, if you hear a quiet hoo hoo hoo, you have a great horned owl living hear you. Grab your copy of Owl Moon and enjoy.

With so many birds in Los Angeles, it is great time to make a bird feeder. My favorite is a toilet paper roll covered in peanut butter and coated in birdseed – a perfect project for a toddler. And while you are saving toilet paper rolls, you can make a nice set of birding binoculars by stapling two rolls together, and adding a little string and a few stickers for fun. Although these do not really magnify, they focus your child’s attention and are fun to make.

Of all the breastfeeding gad-gets and products on the market, one fundamental,

useful invention is the nursing bra. The first patent dates back to 1943 and was called a “nursing brassiere.” After World War II, the post-war baby boom triggered a growing market for nursing bras but most were designed by lingerie compa-nies who simply added a clip. Since then, times have changed and a wide variety of nursing bras exist both for functional, fit, and fashion.

Today, nursing bras offer differ-ent features including clips that snap, zip, hook, or magnetize to provide a discreet, easy access, pull-down method to nurse. There are also many fabrics and designs on the market. Many brands offer styles including underwire, soft-cup, seamless, molded, wire-free, lounge, and sleep

bras. Whichever moms do decide to buy, the most important factor is proper fit.

How do moms get a perfect fit? The best way is to get professionally fit-ted. At Bellies, Babies & Bosoms, we staff certified bra experts who take extra care in fitting moms properly. We explain to moms that every pregnancy and nursing experience differs, but it is very common to change sizes throughout this time. Proper fit is not only important for look and support, but is crucial to permit air-flow so milk ducts do not clog or become infected. We recommend buying bras with plenty of adjustment hooks in the back, or use a bra extender while sizes fluctuate. At Bellies, we also advise moms to buy high-quality bras, from leading brands like Bravado, Bella Materna, Anita, and many others. Depending on mom’s budget, it’s better to buy one good nursing bra then a

be kind and compassionate to their body, and to themselves. We need to encourage women to talk through this new adjustment, to ask for help, and to share how they are feeling. Having a safe place to talk, whether with a therapist or in group therapy, is essential. Model trust and compassionate, empathetic listening skills and try not to “fix” the situation, but point them toward resources when needed. Some women just need to feel heard and validated.

By creating a safe place focused on trust and listening, we can help women navi-gate the challenges of pregnancy and body image, and ultimately, help them own their new identities as mothers. In loving and caring for themselves, they will also help create a loving and caring space for their children.

few poor quality ones. The best fit offers comfort with good support.

Besides a good nursing bra, moms may need to wear nursing pads between their breast and bra. Some moms leak in-between feedings, yet others do not. Nursing pads absorb the leakage, so that mom stays comfortable and her bra does not wet. There are many types of pads on the market, including disposable, wash-able, cotton, bamboo, and mesh lining, amongst some. But trying a few to see what suits a mom’s contentment is best. It is also important to wear clean, dry pads often to allow for adequate airflow.

Whether mom is looking for a plain sleep bra, a fashionable molded cup, or a sexy, lace underwire, Bellies is your one-stop shop for getting profession-ally fitted. With over 40 styles to choose, our bra experts will guide moms to find their match. Bellies also offers a free pre-natal breastfeeding class designed to coach moms in learning everything they need to know about nursing with confidence and knowledge. Greater accessibility for working parents is the goal. The nursery school/kindergarten which has been serving families of the

Foothill Communities for the past sixty-eight years as a traditional half-day, part-time parent participation program is adding options for extended child care. Beginning in September 2014, parents may select from a variety of packages for early drop-off from 7:30 am and/or late pick-up until 5:30. Most importantly, parents may now buy out of classroom days to the extent they wish.

The option for parent participation will remain, as will the possibility of reducing tuition by doing extra participation in the classroom or by helping with site maintenance.

Children from the age of 2 years through Kindergarten will be able to ex-perience the developmental, child-centered program in a licensed and accred-ited facility. The experienced and qualified staff of professional Teachers and Assistant Teachers will guide those parents who elect to serve in the classes.

The campus of SMCNS is rich in natural beauty, providing an inspiring setting for each child to grow and develop at his or her own pace. There are towering oaks, expansive mulberry trees, and a sizeable garden area featur-ing stone fruit trees, a citrus grove, and a section for vegetables and flowers. Children have opportunities to participate in the garden experience.

Play for a child is exploring, experimenting, discovering, inventing, creat-ing, and learning. Because we see play as an essential medium for learning, because we recognize that it contributes to all types of learning - physical, social, emotional, and intellectual - we create an environment where children learn through hands-on experiences.

Parents are invited to schedule a tour of the SMCNS campus by calling the office at 626 355-1655.

Sierra Madre Community Nursery School is re-imaging itself!

In the midst of our global human, economic and environmental crises, we have been overlooking a powerful—perhaps the most powerful—means of fostering peace and prosperity: the consciousness with which we bring our children to life and shepherd them into adulthood. If we really want to change the world, we need to raise a generation “built for peace” from their earliest beginnings. Parenting for Peace is a scientific roadmap for how to hardwire kids with the brain circuitry for such es-sential peacemaker capacities as empathy, trust, self-regulation and imagination. The win-win is that a child wired in this vibrantly healthy way is a joy to parent, and later he or she will go out into our world equipped to creatively and confidently innovate solu-tions, and take pleasure in doing so!

Parenting for Peace offers readers a user-friendly shortcut around today’s informa-

tion overload, because it gives them the most important research from dozens of leading experts woven together with its own empowering perspectives on bringing more joy into family life.
