New Territories Added to the United States Between 1801 and 1861: The Louisiana

Purchase, 18031. Jefferson bought land from FRANCE (the

Louisiana Purchase), which doubled the size of the United States.

1. War with MEXICO resulted in California and the southwest territory becoming part of the United States.

The war with Mexico began as “The Bear Flag Uprising”. American settlers declared California a Republic and caused war with Mexico. Later, the “Bear Flag” became the state flag of California.
