Choice BoardWestward Expansion
Choose one activity from each row to complete. Color in the boxes of the activities you plan to complete.
Pretend you are traveling along the Oregon Trail in the 1800’s. Write 4 diary entries describing your experiences. Use what you know about the trail to help you write your entry. Use the stationary provided by your teacher to write your final copy.
The telegraph used a special code to send messages across an electric wire. Use the coding guide (provided by your teacher) to write a telegram message to a friend from the perspective of someone living in the 1800’s. Create an answer key for your telegraph.
Come up with a list of words related to westward expansion. Then, use those words to create a word cloud. Use the word cloud template provided by your teacher.
Research what life was like as a pioneer living on the frontier. Use the graphic organizer provided by your teacher to help collect your information. Use the internet, books, and other materials to find your information.
Research an important person of the westward expansion era (chosen from a list provided by your teacher). Complete the graphic organizer provided by your teacher to show what you’ve learned.
Create a 3-D covered wagon using a variety of materials. The wagon should be able to stand up on its own. Then, make a list of supplies that pioneers would have put inside of the wagon.
Create a picture timeline of the westward expansion movement. For each major event include a caption and a picture. Use the timeline template provided by your teacher.
Research some of the major forts and landmarks that travelers followed along the Oregon Trail. Use the graphic organizer provided by your teacher to show what you’ve learned.
Create a large map showing important places and events from the westward expansion era. Use the guidelines provided by your teacher to help you.
