SATURDAY, July 28, 2012 ‘THE WESTERN’

Today Jason Harvey pulls on his boots and football jumper for the 300th time as a senior footballer for the Casterton Football Netball Club. Jason had his first game in 1995 as an excited 16 year old and to some extent the rest is history. Jason captained the side for two years and lists playing in the grand final in 1999 against South Gambier as one of his finest memories, although he was disappointed not to come away with the flag. Playing for over one and a half decades Jason has seen many changes in

in game and has played alongside and against many talented footballers. He rates Winis Imbi as the most difficult and elusive player that he has played against.Jason recalls that Justin Munro, Adrian “Popsy Collard fellow 300 gamer Tony Lithgow, Andrew Cameron and current Coach Grant Coxon are amongst the best players he has played alongside. He had enjoyed most of his football as an on-baller and rates some of the youngsters in the current side as having a great deal of potential. A quietly spoken man Jason is humbled by the support and commitment shown to the club by the likes of John Coxon, Terry Baugh and the supporters who follow the teams week in and week out regardless of ladder standing. “People give up their time to work in the canteen, scoreboard, man the gate, it really is amazing” expressed Jason.Past and current committee, players, supporters and the Casterton Community would like to congratulate and thank Jason for his dedication to our club. Thanks Harvs.

The trip to South resulted in wins to A Res, C, 17u and 15uwith the senior teams matches today against Imps vital as they keep alive the chance to play in the 2012 finals series. Our A Graders were in a tight tussle and in a match that was fought out to the end will have a bye today.B graders have been playing solidly constructed netball and will once again be keen to do so today. The junior matchups will boast some very talented players and individual and team clashes will provide top games in 13,15 and 17’s today. Congratulations to Marni Perry on her200th club game last week. No mean feat considering the representative netball and coaching duties she has taken on as a young netballer proud to be involved with the royal blue and white. Hope to see as many ladies as possible enjoying the ‘girls day at the Clubrooms starting at 2pmish. All welcome , bring a friend and join in the fun mock tails ,drinks etc in the warmth of the Clubrooms. Awards last week: A Grade: Casterton Pharmacy: Shanae, Dergholm Hotel: Madalene. A Res: Say Grace: Abbey. B Grade: Hairwize: Teagan, Jim Tant $5: Tori. C Grade: Dergholm: Kate, Kristy’s Flowers: Jess Pollard. 17u Glenny’s Meg, 15u Judi’s Kelpie Kafe: Tayla. 13u Spill the Beans: Amber. McNamara Player of the Day Tori Perry. Good luck today on the Courts and Oval everyone Go Cats!

Last week we travelled to South Gambier in wet and cold conditions the under 18 side fell twenty point short of a win. Inaccurate kicking four goal proved to be costly as the young Cats registered 13 points. South got off to a good start booting three goals to zero a gap the Cats could not catch. After this initial lead the game was fairly even for the rest of the match. Jacob Shannon, Daniel Wombwell and Alex O’Connell were named amongst the better players on the day. Another tough day at the office for coach Killey and the Reserves, However, congratulations must go to the players that turn up every week an d play in a team that has been nshort all year. Better player were the Killey brothers and Shaun Gill. The injury ridden senior side were always going to struggle against the much more fancied South Gambier side. Well done to Brandon Currie, Simon Sealey and Mark Cowland who were named in the best along with Jacob Shannon. Congratulations To Jason Harvey who plays his 300th game for Casterton, Well done and Thanks Harvs.

Motors) Andrew Pepper (Hamilton Gymnasium) Our reserves were no match for the powerful, unbeaten North outfit, but they pleased Coach Tim Delany by staying upbeat, and appreciating the efforts of the other players who made themselves available Awards Tim Cogger (Vestas Leighton) Paul Cleaver (Mt. Napier Rd. Motors) Jindara Austin (Fringe Benefits) Brad Henderson (Craig Sigley Bricklaying) Steve Hurley (A.Tully & Sons) Phil Schultz (Hamilton Gymnasium) The U18s started the match in great fashion, but lost their way after half time. Our form has slipped over the past few weeks and the boys need to regroup as the ‘business end’ of the season approaches. Awards Sam Hasell (Bulldog Towel) Tim McCann (Hamilton First Aide) Sebastian Rogers (Hamilton City Meats)Matt Monaghan(Jon Manson Award) Ed Purvis (John Uebergang Award) Nick Armstrong (John Waters Award)

Our game against East brought us a welcome day of sunshine. Baby pies had a solid first half. After some changes in the third took a little time to settle but came back in the last. Over all a good game by all. The 13s girls had a real struggle against a very strong team, they persevered all game but was not our day. Much the same outcome for the 15s with some great passages of play, but east was a good deal stronger. With the 17s the final score did not reflect the high standard or game. We worked well both ends of the court. C graders had a consistent game, all contributed well and put in effort till the end. They were strong to the ball and in control of their game, thanks for helping out Rosemary. Well done B grade! Going down by only 3, to 3rd on the ladder. Training is paying off and the second efforts were brilliant. Finishing of the season with some great team work. Great win by 15 goals in A res, after being all square at half time. Consistent shooting and excellent team play from the defenders through to the mid court and goal third. In A grade we had a solid four quarters and utilised the ball well. There was great control of the ball and good team effort. Winners by 14.

We travelled across the border with hopes of 2 victories, unfortunately this was not the case. The Under 18’s battled hard and although East had more scoring shots, the boys were in the contest till the end, going down by 1 point. Best Will Winter-Cooke, Nick McMahon and Brody Fishwick. The Reserves were extremely undermanned needing help from East and Under 18 players. The team was never in the hunt losing by a big margin. Best: Troy Hustwayte, Nathan Lester and Mark Aspinall. The seniors started poorly, not registering a score in the 1st quarter. Although the field play was good, the forwards were not able to capitalise on the backs good play. The 2nd quarter the boys registered 3 goals and were only down by 12 points at half time. However the 3rd quarter was a repeat of the first, with the team not scoring and were down by 32 at 3/4 time. 2 late goals in the last 1/4 made the result a little more respectable with the boys losing by 34 points. This week we host South and hope to have the same result as last time we played, a win. All the best to all the teams.

The 13 and under continue to fly the flag for the Demons netball with another impressive win on Saturday. It was a great way for the girls to send off co-coach Tess Ellard who is, as we speak, sunning herself on a beach in Bali!!! The B grade also sent Tess off in style with one of their best wins of the season and Tess herself went out on a high with a best on court performance. The A grade faced a ust win game after the disappointment of the North clash last weekend and hung tough for a six goal win in one of the best team efforts for the season. Megan Lawler made her senior debut in A reserve and impressed her older team mates – the last in a long line of juniors making their mark at senior level this season. Only two home games to go so don’t forget to help out with the reminaing duties for the season – if everyone pitches in, no one has to bear too much of the load and don’t forget clubroom opening next Saturday.

Casterton paid us a visit last week and we made the most of it with all three sides walking away with a win. The U18’s had a great match with the team leading all the way to win by 19 points. The Reserves game was more one sided, never letting Casterton get the upper hand and taking out the game by 17 goals. Our Seniors did much the same leading from the first bounce with a six goal lead at the first break and carrying out a 15 goal win at the final siren. Goals were spread around the nine individual kickers with young gun Scott Enderl and recent addition Brett Exelby with 4 each leading the way. Brodie Foster showed some fantastic skills with a great mark in the final quarter helping towards being named best afield with Brett O’Neil and Brad Bryant close behind. This week we welcome back Simon Berkefeld from his week away playing for SA in the Australian Country Football Championships. Simon made his presence felt named in the best players list in 4 out of the 6 games for the carnival, just missing out on a spot in the All-Australian side. He is a welcome return for our trip over the border with Hamilton always a tough beat at home. GO DEMONS!

Our last match against Hamilton was played in very wintery conditions and we came away with 4 wins and a draw. The little U12’s found the conditions very difficult and only managed to play 3 quarters. This week we honour our former player KHAO WATTS by congratulating her on becoming an ANZ CHAMPION. Khao played a crucial role at WA for the Magic. After a nervous start to the match she found her rhythm and fed the ball beautifully under extreme pressure. It was a dream come true for Khao after being recruited by the Magic pre-season from State League Club Woods Panthers, to play in an ANZ Championship team. Her hard work and dedication being recognized by the New Zealand based team and rewarded with the ultimate prize. With over 50 family, friends and former team mates from Millicent travelling to the game Khao was ecstatic and enjoyed sharing the moment with those close to her. She will return to the South East shortly for a 3 week holiday before returning to NZ to compete in a local competition. Good luck to all teams today against East. With many needing the wins to keep their finals chances alive go for everything and enjoy your game.

Tell tale signs that you are getting older. Women tend to go to the hair dressers and return with something resembling “fairy floss” on their head and prance around like they are the queen. They ask you what you think and of course you lie. I get a bit worried that a variety of killer wasps may nest in the new “do”. Men and eating become messy as they always have sauce or pastry in the corners of their mouth and on occasions half a slice of tomato stuck on their cheek that can only be removed with a chisel. You will always refer to the 80’s as the best times and the best music or as I like to call it “Back when life was fun”. Huge Auction /Free Skits Night tonight so stick around with 80 items on offer starting at 7.30pm. Signed Crows jumper and footy. Signed Richmond memorabilia and many other items so grab a bargain, there is always Wood, Lambs, Tax Returns, Fishing Trip, Good Vibrations Pack, etc. The skits are always a terrific laugh so enjoy the evening.Go Saints

The days where East juniors would lose against the tall Hamilton sides are over. Last week East

dominated all junior grades and keep striving to the top. It’s fantastic to watch, if you haven’t come

out and watched any of these young talented girls, I suggest you do and show some support. The

seniors had their battles, A grade didn’t get the result we needed and now are out of any finals

hopes. A res struggled to get the points, with injuries and team mates away it’s been a tough ride

the last few weeks. B grade seem to be missing the strength from Olivia Coote but with the help of

brilliant juniors they got the points to keep climbing the ladder. C grade “wow” what a win. Biggest

winning margin yet! Great job by all, keep this intensity going! Travelling to Millicent today, making

it a tough game for some than others. Good luck everyone!

SATURDAY, July 28, 2012 ‘THE WESTERN’

WORLD renowned middleweight boxer Sam Soliman is coming to the Western District and Hamilton’s best will be taking on the man better known as ‘The King’. Soliman, who will be training in Warrnambool as part of his campaign to hopefully meet IBF middleweight champion Daniel Geale, will fight local amateurs in an exhibition at Casterton Football Club on Sunday August 5. The 38-year-old will do 12 rounds of three minutes, with Mark Klobe (Hamilton), Ethan Currie (Casterton), Mitch Clark (Lucindale), Shane Carlin (Warrnambool) and Rohan Eccles (Koroit) stepping into the ring with the champion. Local trainer Ray ‘Mocka’ McIntosh was excited by the upcoming event. “You will not see anything like this again in Western Victoria. To have a champion like Sam Soliman come to Casterton and fight is huge,” he said. “It’s an exciting opportunity for these boys and something they’ll never forget that’s for sure. I think this event will explode.” Soliman is best known for his two well publicised bouts with Anthony Mundine in 2007 and 2008, which ‘The Man’ won with a ninth round knockout and a 12 round unanimous decision respectively. Expected to ‘take it easy’ on the Western District amateurs, McIntosh said the boxing will still be fierce. “He’ll get them through. It’s an exhibition, so Sam will program himself to work with the lads,” McIntosh said. “It will be amazing to watch though. These lads won’t take a backward step and with just two or three rounds each, it’s going to be some fast and exciting action. These sorts of events come around once in a blue moon and it’s something you really don’t want to miss.” The event begins at noon on August 5 with lunch and bar facilities available on the day. Cost for adults is $20, while children under-16 is $10. On top of the main event, there will be six local amateur bouts, male and female. “We’ve got something really going at the moment and there’s a lot of talent in Western Victoria,” McIntosh boasted. “There’s going to be some really good amateur fights so all in all, it’s going to be a great day. For details on the event call Casterton Football Club delegate Neale Guthrie on 0419 518 280.

LANDCAREVICTORIA

What is a catchment?

Geographically a catchment is an area of land that drains to a single low point such as

a gully, creek or river.A large catchment may be made up of a series of smaller sub-catchments and these are

made up of soil, water, air and vegetation. Together theses elements support life and

make up an ecosystem that within it has cycling of nutrients and other elements. Each

component is linked, so when one changes it has an effect on the other elements.

What is Integrated Catchment Management?

Integrated Catchment Management is a coordinated approach to the management of

natural resources. It is the integration of land, water, vegetation and other biological

resources for use in a sustainable, balanced way. ICM draws together all members of

the community to effectively manage the catchment in an integrated and holistic way.

ICM fosters joint action by all sectors of the community in an effort to co-ordinate the

problems and solutions within a catchment.Catchment Strategy – The Glenelg Hopkins CMA. Regional Catchment Strategy will be

built into a catchment management plan. The Murray-Darling Basin Initiative defines ICM as “a process through which people can

develop a vision, agree on shared values and behaviors, make informed decision and

act together to manage the natural resources of their catchment”.

This could be a commitment by the community and agencies of the catchment where

the overall aim could be that while addressing stream flows and stream health, to halt

the increase of salt and silt discharging from Fiery Creek and Salt Creeks and to reduce

overall salinity and silting in Lake Bolac. The adoption of the ICM approach is increasingly regarded as the most effective way

of dealing with environmental issues. ICM takes a ‘whole of systems’ approach and

avoids dealing with issues in isolation. It also recognizes the important role played by the

community in managing natural resources and advantages, such as increased mutual

understanding and effectiveness that results from a genuine partnership between

community and government.

SATURDAY, July 28, 2012 ‘THE WESTERN’

The 2012 Australian Country Football Carnival was a tremendous success for the WorkSafe VCFL.Our Vic1 team returned to Victoria as the reigning title holder of the ACFC Cup after being the dominant team all carnival. The team assembled by Peter Knights and his group of selectors and coaches was a powerful unit that won every position on the ground in every match they competed in. An additional highlight was the fact the VCFL Vic2 side was the opponent in Grand Final. The Vic2 squad had beaten all comers in the preliminary rounds to achieve their best ever result against general classifications at the ACFC. John Cossar and the experienced leadership group had the boys humming from the first morning of competition. They caught many at the Carnival by surprise as a very tough, skillful and damaging opponent. It was an arduous carnival format for the players. Every player played nearly 5 hours of matches across two ovals in Wagga over three days of play. Not only were they prepared to do the hard things on the field for their mates in the ‘Big V’ jumpers, but they were meticulous in their preparation and recovery. A large thank you must go to the trainers and recovery crew in getting the boys ‘up and about’ for the entire Carnival. With this dedication and ultimate success came a number of individual awards that proved to be the icing on the cake for the WorkSafe VCFL. Matt Dyer from Boolarra in the Mid Gippsland League took the prestigious J.J. Lussick Medal as best player of the 2012 Carnival. This medal was tallied on votes across all the games.Brent MacLeod from Thompson in the Geelong & District League was awarded the best Under 21 of the Carnival. MacLeod had an impact in every match for Vic2, and will have raised the eyebrows of the large number of recruiters who made the journey to Wagga.Grant Weeks was again the Golden Boot winner of the Carnival as the highest goal scorer at the 2012 Carnival. The WorkSafe VCFL was also represented by an incredible 15 players to make the All Australian team at the conclusion of the Carnival. The VCFL would like to congratulate these players on their personal achievement – the green and gold jumper is a rare one to now have in your collection.

We took away a mixed bag of results from our trip to Hamilton last week. The A Reserve Girls fought hard all day in a very close encounter but at the final whistle the score didn’t go our way- 34-39. C Grade just couldn’t get over the line this week, going down 27-38. Best: Steph McInerney & Dani Kettle (Wreckett). U/17 girls also suffered a loss 19-40. Best: Brianna Walters & Alicia Close. Well done to the U/15’s who held on for a 4 point victory. Best: Amber Hood & Sarah Hayman. Another big win to the U/13’s who defeated Imps 46 to 10. Best: Laura Day & Keelin Winterfield. Our U/12 girls have have been very consistent & have again bought a win home defeating Imps 36 to 4. Best: Sarah Cavanagh & Jessica Stafford. Encouragement awards: Tyne Bosko & Emily Close. Let’s rebuild this week girls & gear up for some strong competition against Portland at home on Saturday. Go North!!

Last week saw us travel to Melville oval to take on the Imp Dog, coming away with 2 wins. The under 18s had a great win against Imps in a low scoring arm wrestle against a side that was sitting above them. Best players Jacob Bruhn, Sam Egan, Alex Bowd, Nick Mcinerney, Glen Soper, Jack Gibbs. The seconds had huge win against Imps with the lads sharing the ball around and a good spread of goalkickers. Best players Mark Vinko 6 goals, Dean Watson, Paul Griffith, Mick Mcrae 6 goals, James Lamont, Stevie Mcinerney 6 goals. The seniors went down to Imps in a game where coach Mconnell unfortunately suffered a badly broken jaw early in the game. We as a club players, officials and supporters wish Justin all the best in his recovery. Best players Tim Mcinerney, Scott Flett, Nick Bartetzko, Michael Quirk, Anthony Kilsby. Today we welcome the Vic Tigers to the SA Tiger Cage in what will be three very important games of footy. Last week we hosted West Gambier and with some very close games in three of our senior grades made for some excellent netball. A.Grade won by 16 with the Awards going to Stacey Rolph Lido Larder, and Meal award went to Kerri Jennings. A.Res lost by 2 awards won Meal Casey Anson, Bakers Delight Cathryn Walder. Also Ellen Zeunert played 100 games for the club Congratulation go to you for this achievement. B.Grade went down by just one goal Awards Edwards Waterfront Restuarant Meg Hol, Video Ezy Janelle Lancaster. C.Grade suffered their first defeat for the season going down by 4 awards Bakers Delight Ashleigh Feerguson, Dominos Pizza Zoe Clark. 17/under won by 13 awards Dominos Pizza Remy Grant, Canteen Jess Valori, 15/under won by 16 Awards Bakers Delight Talhi Cavagnino, Canteen Claire Outtram. 13/under won by 17 Awards Subway Olivia Cottier, Bakers Delight Giaan Englezos. 12/under won by 30 awards KFC Daisy Schwarz, Spuds of Portland Taylah Purcell. Well done and this week we meet North over the border, good luck to all teams Yours in Netball Rhonda Compton.

A good return from our encounter against West Gambier when all 3 grades saluted. The U18’s continued on their winning way, but only after some jittery moments in the 1st half. Jordan Kane gave a masterly display to notch 4 goals and setting up many more. Thomas Templeton also showed his class in the slippery conditions whilst Joel Mirtschin, Daniel Jackson, Dylan Barr and Zac Telfer all made telling contributions. The Reserves also kept their victorious streak going when they got over a determined West. In a game where everyone did their piece, Jake Patterson and Harley Angus were judged best. The versatile Dylan Barr, doubling up from the preceding game, also featured in the best players. A good day’s work from Dylan. Jamie Blacksell, Shaun Trenorden and Jordan Cables rounded out the top six.Despite worsening weather conditions, the Seniors put on a classy exhibition to eclipse a never say die opponent. Good players everywhere, but Luke Van Heugten kept his purple patch going to achieve top honour. The big fellow Denis O’Loughlin was extremely effective along with Daniel Falcone, Jarrod Hayse, Rhys Egan and Sam Fleming. Coach Holt was a decisive factor up forward with 7 majors.A difficult assignment this week when we travel to North Gambier, where wins in any grade will be well received.

The 2012 Southern Border Review Panel has released its Preliminary Recommendations to all stakeholder clubs and leagues across the review area of South East South Australia and South West Victoria. The Panel, comprising of both South Australia Community Football League (SACFL) and WorkSafe Victorian Country Football League (VCFL) management, will now await feedback on this report before producing a final report in September. Direct stakeholders have until 15 August to lodge a response to the preliminary report. The 2012 Southern Border Review was commissioned in late 2011 by both the VCFL and SACFL to establish qualitative and quantitative data to allow recommendations for the optimal structure of football competitions in South West Victoria and South East South Australia for season 2013 and beyond.Such a review had been requested by the Western Border Football League and supported by the Hampden Football Netball League. A large number of requested club movements in recent years had also been a factor that could not be ignored. An extensive consultation stage has underpinned the project, with the panel sitting in 7 locations and meeting directly with over 83 organisations. This has been complemented by considerable investment and analysis in to:

• club demographics• travel distances, player numbers, age and residence, financial turnover and status• community demographics• population make up, catchment around clubs, economic status of communities.

VCFL CEO, Steven Reaper said that the process has been a thorough one and that the recommendations look to improve the structure and support for football in the South West, “The Panel has acted in the best interests of the total region and believes an altered total region vision is required to maximise participation levels, build better outcomes for junior football, and develop two premier competitions of high standard that are within reach of all communities in this part of Australia.”“The VCFL will publically release the Southern Border Review on the VCFL website on Thursday 26th July out of respect to the stakeholder clubs and leagues who are intimately involved with the process and deserve the first look at the document”, said Reaper. The Review Panel looks forward to receiving and assessing all feedback on the Preliminary Recommendations before developing a final report that will be released in September.
