SATURDAY, July 7, 2012 ‘THE WESTERN’

Saturday against Casterton we celebrate a Millicent Netballer and WBNA Elite Champion, Donna Denton as she plays her 300th Club game. Donna’s lists of career achievements are incredible with 5 Western Border A Grade Best and Fairest’s and 2 Runner Up’s. 9 Club A Grade Best and Fairest and 2 Runner Up’s. 9 Premierships comprising 8 A Grade and 1 B Grade. Donna began her Netball Career with Millicent in 1990 playing under 15s and B Grade at the age of 13 winning the B Grade Premiership and Runner Up in the U/15s. The next few years Donna cemented a place in the A Grade and in 1994 at the age of 17 won her first League Medal.

In 1996 Donna headed to Adelaide to teachers college where she played netball with the Adelaide Cougars under Coach Jackie Blyth. In 2000 Donna returned to Millicent to Teach and has been in the role as Coach or Assistant Coach of the WBFL Millicent A Grade Netball side since. When you see Donna’s dedication, preparation, professionalism and work ethic at training and game day you can see that she covers all areas and her accolades are well earned and deserved. Playing with her best mates and introducing youngsters and teaching them all her tricks have kept an injection of excitement around the team every year. Natalie Medhurst (Firebirds/Thunderbirds/Australia ) and Khao Watts (Waikato Magic) have benefitted from Donna’s Coaching and are playing in the National Netball Competition while Natalie has been terrific playing Goal Attack for Australia. Donna plays mainly Goal Attack/Goal Shooter and is a model of consistency that plans her pregnancies precisely so she doesn’t miss many games. Her work rate was so high in the 2010 premiership that she had to be carried to the club on a stretcher on the SundayDonna’s husband Chris currently coaches the Reserves and is a member of the 200 club and they have 3 daughters Lucy, Abby and Emily so the future of Millicent Netball looks strong. Donna has a wonderful family that have always been heavily involved with the running of the MFNC on and off the court. Congratulations on an outstanding achievement Donna.

LANDCAREVICTORIA

What is a catchment?

Geographically a catchment is an area of land that drains to a single low point such as

a gully, creek or river.A large catchment may be made up of a series of smaller sub-catchments and these are

made up of soil, water, air and vegetation. Together theses elements support life and

make up an ecosystem that within it has cycling of nutrients and other elements. Each

component is linked, so when one changes it has an effect on the other elements.

What is Integrated Catchment Management?

Integrated Catchment Management is a coordinated approach to the management of

natural resources. It is the integration of land, water, vegetation and other biological

resources for use in a sustainable, balanced way. ICM draws together all members of

the community to effectively manage the catchment in an integrated and holistic way.

ICM fosters joint action by all sectors of the community in an effort to co-ordinate the

problems and solutions within a catchment.Catchment Strategy – The Glenelg Hopkins CMA. Regional Catchment Strategy will be

built into a catchment management plan. The Murray-Darling Basin Initiative defines ICM as “a process through which people can

develop a vision, agree on shared values and behaviors, make informed decision and

act together to manage the natural resources of their catchment”.

This could be a commitment by the community and agencies of the catchment where

the overall aim could be that while addressing stream flows and stream health, to halt

the increase of salt and silt discharging from Fiery Creek and Salt Creeks and to reduce

overall salinity and silting in Lake Bolac. The adoption of the ICM approach is increasingly regarded as the most effective way

of dealing with environmental issues. ICM takes a ‘whole of systems’ approach and

avoids dealing with issues in isolation. It also recognizes the important role played by the

community in managing natural resources and advantages, such as increased mutual

understanding and effectiveness that results from a genuine partnership between

community and government.

The local derby was played on Sunday and attracted a large crowd. The under 12 had a loss but the score was not a true reflection on the game. Good job girls-keep persisting. The 13 and under were defeated on the score board but the coaches felt the girls game play has really improved. The 15 and under played an awesome game, winning by 13 goals. What is being worked on at training was played out today. The 17 and under won by a solid margin of 15. This was the reward for being focused, determined to win and following instructions.C grade had a great team effort and won by doing the basics.B grade although they did not win, had a hard fought game and worked really hard as a team.A reserve suffered their second defeat of the season. As a team we need to keep our netball simple and hold our heads high.

Last Sunday’s ‘Local Derby; brought a mixture of emotions, with the solemn, one minutes silence as a mark of respect for the passing away of legendary Bulldog, Keith ‘Curly Lang’, intermingled with the satisfaction of scoring three hard fought wins over Our ‘co-tenants’ - A tough week on the training track, and the determination to ‘do it for Curly’ were important factors in Sunday’s success. We thank the Hamilton team, umpires and other officials for taking part in the ‘line up’And one minutes silence. Under Eighteen Awards Tim McCann (Vestas Leighton / Bulldog Towel) Angus Noske (MEGT) Ed Purvis (Rob Collins Builders) Josh Nield (Jon Manson Award) Roger Morris (John Uebergang Award) Mitch Johnson (John Waters Award) Reserves Awards Benjamin Vagg (Vestas Leighton) Matt Wishart (Fox Refrigeration) Chris Quinn (Fringe Benefits) Jamie Ferguson (Rob Collins Builders) Leigh Alexander (Craig Sigley Bricklaying) Anthony Ractliffe (Hamilton Gymnasium) Senior Awards Josh Meulendyks (Vestas Leighton) Jarred O’Brien (Lakeside Service Centre) Callum Kanoniuk (Victorian Pet Foods) Matt Newell (Fox Refrigeration)Cameron Whyte (Rob Collins Builders) Jason McIntosh (Hamilton Gymnasium) Jarred O’Brien took out the Bulldog Award (As selected by the players) Today all three of our teams face a major challenge as we host the strong Portland Club

A great day when we hosted South Galmbier with all teams having wins. A.Grade certainly played extremely well recording a great win with Awards going to Kerri Jennings Edwards Waterfront Restaurant, and Stephainie Arnott Video Ezy. A.Res awards went to Larissa Carr Bakers Delight, Dominoes Pizza Michelle Finck. B.Grade Lido Larder Jenna Domburg, Meal Award Meg Hol. C.Grade Meal Award Adele Chester, Bakers Delight Eloise Flleming 17/under Subway Brianna Caldow, Bakers Delight Remy Grant. 15/under KFC Rani Kane, Canteen Andrea Smith, 13/under Dominos Pizza Elka Smith “Canteen Kate Davis, Our under 12 girls did us proud with a great win with awards Bakers Delight Taylor Kelsey, Spuds of Portland Tayla Purcell. Today we travell to Hamilton to take on Imperials.and with no A.Grade they will have to wait a couple of weeks to play their next game as we then have the bye. Good luck to all other teams hope for some more wins. Yours in Netball Rhonda Compton.

The U18’s again had to operate under modified conditions, but to the credit of the Portland lads who donned the South colours and the South players as well, a competitive and entertaining match occurred. Portland ran out comfortable winners eventually, but only after being second to the ball for lengthy periods of the game. The consistent Harry Warren led the way with strong support from Dean Jones, Hamish Withers and Jamie Blacksell. Dane Jarrett and Daniel Jackson. The Reserves again capitulated, but only after a dogged battle that saw them leading until deep into the game. South eventually wore them down, but at least there was more spirit shown with Sam Anson, Jake Patterson and Jaron Quinlivan being the standouts. It was also encouraging to see different names such as Eddie Williamson, Lucas Mibus and Brad Falcone feature in the awards. The Senior contest had it all. In a classic goal for goal shootout in the last stages of the game, Portland had its nose in front when it mattered most. The game had everything-wet weather skills, loads of grit and nail-biting atmosphere. Portland had desperate competitors in abundance, especially Beau Bentley, Justin Van Heugten, Denis O’Loughlin, Sam Fleming, Daniel Falcone, Luke Van Heugten and Jarrod Holt (5 match-winning goals). This week sees us travel North to battle Imperials again, and hopefully three more victories.

A tough day in Portland for our netballers but the good thing was all coaches reported their teams worked hard and did their best to make a contest of it against a very strong club. For those of you who have been out to training in the past fortnight you will have seent that the clubrooms continue to take shape and basically the carpeting and a lick and polish and removal of rubbish and we’re pretty much right to move into our new home. Thanks to the committee for giving up their Saturday off last weekend to get some of those thankless tasks done in preparation for the official opening on August 4. A big thanks also to all the parents who have helped this season thus far too with canteen, scoring, timing and of course, wearing that fashionable high vis vest – the club is grateful for you willingness to be part of the huge volunteer base that keeps the club going. Also thanks to the glamourous girls that made the last minute social night at the club after the Portland game a success and a lot better looking room. Stay tuned for our next big event. Di Gould

It seems like an eternity ago now, but falling to Portland by one solitary still hurts. Brodie Foster made

a welcome return with three goals, while veteran Brent Howard was brave all day.

The B Grade were more fortunate with a come from behind win, while the U18s were always under

the pump against the competition leaders.

This week all grades need to fire up, with three wins there for the taking if the players are hungry

enough.

Last week we played host to East Gambier to start the second round. A mixed day, with the

seniors all getting a win, the juniors having to face the might of the East juniors, and the little 12’s

going down by 1 in a thriller. Last round also played host to the WEST night – with a lot of effort

going into some great costumes !! We now look forward to heading over to Blue Lake Sports

Park today for yet another week of tough netball. Good luck to everyone today, and look forward

to everyone frocking up in their racewear tonight for the annual Malseed Cup. Keep your eyes

and ears posted for more upcoming social events. Have a good day !!!

Hello All I trust you enjoyed your weekend off and managed to stay dry. A fortnight ago we hosted East for an unsuccessful day. The U18s were touched up to the tune of 100 Points. Best Players Ben McKay, Doug Lloyd, Daniel Gardiner, Jesse Pfitzner, Alick Mansfield, Craig Walker. The Reserves put up a better showing than their first encounter but still went down by 66 Points. Best Players Nic Allen, Yuki Akita, Niall Easterbrook, Kayne Badman, Todd McPartlan. The Seniors were in with yet another chance at half time going in with a 1 point lead. It all fell apart in the third quarter when East kicked 6 Goals to 1, the eventual deficit being 36 Points. Best Players Alan Kennedy, Josh Ransom, Joel Carter, Darin McElroy, Abdullah Kamara. A tough trip to Blue Lake Sport Park it’ll take a focused four quarter effort today. GO THE ROOS Socs

With a quick weekend break its time to get back on the court and take on big rivals North! East A grade will be looking for a win, after a big defeat against West two weeks ago. It will be nice to welcome back Caroline & Conor into the team. A res will be up against a strong North side and with the few injuries and away players, the girls will have to fight all four quarters to get a top result. After a good training with the B grade girls, I’m sure they will be determined for a win after the West round, and with smart game play they should dominate North. After a game to forget two weeks ago from the C grade girls, they will need four solid quarters to get over the line this week. 17’s will have a tough battle, as will the 15’s. After both dominating against West, smart decision making will be necessary. Under’s 13’s are always a pleasure; I have no doubts they will rip North to parts. Good luck Under 12’s, let’s make it another win for your tally. Good luck all - Bo Richards

Last round we encountered some stiff competition against Millicent. The A Grade girls were gracious in defeat in a high scoring game with the final score at 51-83. Best: Alisha Bryan (Neale & Nulty Transport) and Danika Jolley. The A Res girls had some good passages of play but were defeated 33-46, keep going girls, you’ll get there! Best: Christie McCourt (VearsTaxis) & Maddie Day (Kay Rice & Sharon Day Sheds). B Grade suffered a loss this week, losing 36-45. Bad luck girls. Best: Eliza Short & Larissa Norman (More Bricks More Mud). C Grade held on to win 48-40. Best: Steph McInerney & Amy Kitchen (Wide Span Sheds). U/17’s also held on to win by 7. Best: Alycia Close & Abby Beames. Ten goals was enough to get the u/15’s over the line. Best: Amber Hood & Sarah Hayman. Yet another great win from the u/13’s- 37-20. Best: Laura Day & Ebony McAdam. The u/12 girls tried hard but lost 17-27. Encouragement awards went to Claire Day, Hannah Nulty, Lara Willoughby & Sarah Flett. Today we face East at the kennel, let’s work hard & chalk up a few more wins. Good luck to all teams- Go Tigers!

Two weeks ago saw another great day, at the Tiger cage with three very good wins and some very special individual achievments. The thirds kicked off proceedings with a massive win. Best player was Tyson Currie who kicked 12 goals, but not satisfied with that Tyson played in the reserves and proceeded to slot through another 6 goals, giving him 18 for the day magnificent day out. next was Nick Mcinerney, Jake Schutz, Sam Egan, Jack Pudney, Matthew Mcinerney. The reserves suprisingly had a very comfortable win against Millicent with some of the thirds boys lending a hand. Best players Mick Mcrae with 6 goals, Brett Kennedy, Tyson Currie with his 6 goals, Nick Mcinerney getting a nod for the second time, Sam Egan also with his second award for the day, Kingsley Clark who along with Tess has now welcomed a beautiful baby girl into the world, congrats to you both. The seniors really was a good hard game of footy between two commited sides, well done to our boys for coming out on top. Best players Josh Woodall, Adam Kurzman, Richie O’Grady, Lachy Herring, Scott Flett, David Nulty with his magnificent goal on the run. Today we venture across town to the Kennel where North and East games are always a great battle. Good luck Tiges bring home the 12 points. Richard Copeland.

SATURDAY, July 7, 2012 ‘THE WESTERN’

The time has come again for clubs and leagues to nominate their outstanding volunteers for the WorkSafe Country Footy Volunteer of the Year for 2012.

As we all know, volunteers are the lifeblood of our sport, and we all have volunteers that go above and beyond the call of duty at our clubs.Look around at who is doing the work at your club today; Was there a familiar face on the gate that has been there for years? A person in the canteen that has served your pie to you since you could only just see over the counter? What about the team manager that knows every kid, parent and sibling by name?Who was the first to arrive? Who will be the last to leave?

Recognising your club volunteers with a nomination in the 2012 Country Footy Volunteer of the Year Program is a great way to give them a pat on the back, and another way for you to show them that you value the service they have given you. Make a fuss over them – even though most are happiest working out of the spotlight! All nominations in the VCFL Country Footy Volunteer of the Year Award will be recognised with a certificate of thanks that can be presented to the volunteer at your club presentation night or AGM.The winner of the 2012 WorkSafe Country Footy Volunteer of the Year will win a suite of prizes, and the volunteer’s club will receive a $2000 voucher from VCFL FootyMart to purchase new equipment for the club.It is very easy to nominate your club stalwart, enthusiastic committee person or tireless club worker for this award. Just go to the VCFL website or the VCFL Facebook page and look for the links and fill out the quick online form.Previous winners of the prestigious award include Ron Trimble from Newbridge Football Netball Club for his services steering the club through the flood crisis, Leonie Griffiths from BalranaldFNC who connected the local community with the football club with a massive Pink Footy Day, and Bill Kuys who over many years rebuilt and guided Emerald FNC out of a tenuous position to be the first Gold Standard Quality Club in Victoria. Country football doesn’t just happen – it takes the efforts of thousands of volunteers every week of the year to put on what you see today. More than that, these volunteers are giving their precious time to create a place for our kids and our community to gather, to learn, to celebrate, and to support one another. Those who can, do. Those who can do more, volunteer.Go to www.vcfl.com.au or search VCFLFooty on Facebook to nominate now

SATURDAY, July 7, 2012 ‘THE WESTERN’

Whether your team hasn’t lost a match yet, is in the middle of the bunch, or is struggling to get a win on the board, the need for a mid season review at your footy club is still the same.It can be very difficult at the end of a long season to remember back on what happened throughout the year – what worked well, where you needed a bit of extra help, and how everyone was feeling at the time. The gap between the end of the season and the AGM is one that we all look forward to as a respite from footy – and gathering some information now will help you to refocus your energies come the end of the season. The key purpose of a mid season review is to accelerate the rate of change at the club and enhance the performances of the entire group for the rest of the year and the season to come. Again – a desire to improve the current situation is about the only thing all VCFL clubs have in common, be they cellar dwellers or undisputed champions. It is important to try and get information from as many people around the club as possible – everyone views the club from a slightly different perspective, and hence will have something different to offer. It can take a little time, but it is very important to get the thoughts of the playing group, committee, members, coaching and development staff and also some key community networks to inform the review. The role of the President as leader in this process is important. A key element of this information gathering and review is to cut through the emotions to find out where the challenges and improvements are for your club. You will need to log the thoughts without judgment, finger pointing, personalities, and conflicts. You want to go hard on the issue, and be soft on the person. The easiest way to review the first half of the footy season may be to dig out your club strategic plan and put some ticks and crosses in the boxes of the things you were hoping to achieve in the year. Have you been on track in the identified areas of your club? Has your focus been where you said it would be? Do you have a strategic plan?Measure this against your budget – are you tracking well on the balance sheet at this stage of the year in relation to your expected profits? Are there any shortfalls in income, or have your expenses blown out in any areas? Are there clear reasons for either of these? You will want your coaches to have a say in how they are tracking against expectations, and most will have an interest to know how the playing group is assessing their performance at this stage of the caper.Face to face conversations can occur on an informal and formal basis as a part of this review. You may wish to formally talk with your coaches in interviews about how they are going against their expectations, while a chat on the boundary line with a few of your key members and players at the footy may be an ideal way of getting some insights into the club. The playing group can be surveyed with a confidential set of questions to be returned to the committee, or put together a focus group with some of the leaders in the group along with a few of the younger boys.A quick way of supplementing this information and getting the ball rolling may be a quick KEEP, STOP, START discussion on a Thursday night after training.Remind the group of all the elements of running a footy club – onfield, social, community connections, volunteer commitments, fundraising, facilities, athlete development, and communications.Ask the questions - What do we want to KEEP doing, what do we need to STOP doing, and what do we need to START doing to achieve the club goals and to set the benchmark for the performance of the club as a whole?Have a few scribes go to work on some butchers paper. You will reinforce where you are going well, what needs improving, and may get some things that you may not have considered before.Remember that the on field performance of the club is only one small part of running a successful local football club, and that all clubs are in different phases of their development cycle. The one thing that we all have in common is the desire to improve our current position – and the value of open, honest, and timely information to get us to focus forward can happen at any time.

For further information and assistance, please contact your VCFL Area Manager.

We had a mixed day at North coming away with four wins. Thanks to all the committee for organising Buddy Night during the week. It is great to see the whole club together and mixing on these nights. This week we take a look at Carol Grimes’ 15 & Under team, who have had an interesting and challenging journey to this point of the season. The girls have trained very hard with great spirit each and every week. So far the results on court have been inconsistent but I am sure the second half of the season will see this super bunch of girls lift and surprise themselves and the opposition. Lucy Walker and Alice Bowering our captain and vice are leading by example on and off court. Lucy always provides comic relief and Alice often wins the hard nut award for her guts and determination. New recruits Chloe McGuiness and Sarah Madden have shown great dedication and improvement week in week out. Zoe Brown has displayed some sharp shooting and had a break out game against East. Alex shows her versatility and talent going from defence to centre or where ever she is required with a smile. The two Emily’s have played with style and determination and along with Sally and Georgia do whatever is asked of them with great attitude. Our team motto is “Team work makes the dream work” and this is a top team of girls.

With the price of electricity and the Carbon tax looming it makes sense to get more adventurous as a handyman. One person that we will call Dave for the sake of the story had a wife nagging him to fix leaking bathroom fittings that he kept putting off. Last Sunday while watching the Crows get smashed by the Kangaroos he had nowhere to hide, so armed with a shifter (the only tool that he owns) he decided to tackle the leaking fittings. Turned the water off, serviced all bathroom fixtures, water back on, no leaks, off to bed. In the morning Dave jumps in the shower, admiring his handy work, turns the taps on and the shower head flies off, followed by a handle then another and we have Niagara Falls going berserk. Naked and in a panic Dave runs out the front to turn off the water mains then dresses and goes to Bunnings to get all new stuff and repair it before his wife returns from her walk. Dave tidies everything just in time as his wife returns, she says that there has been a report of a streaker in the area holding a Party Sav. Dave replies I saw one but he was holding a stick of Salami! Go Saints

SATURDAY, July 7, 2012 ‘THE WESTERN’

The Murray South East team participated in the South Australian Country Championships in Berri on the weekend and came home with 2nd place. It won its two games on Saturday and this meant they played in the grand final on Sunday.

Tylah Saunders won the MSE best player medal for the carnival playing as a rover and along with our other on ball players in Simon Berkefeld, James Paprotny, Richie O’Grady, Liam O’Neil and Dylan Dempsey provided us with a lot of run and drive from the middle of the ground. Our targets up forward in Matt Altmann with 5 goals, Luke Harrowfield 3 goals and coach Justin McConnell 7 goals finished the work of our players up field. Adam Davey, and Lachie Medhurst in the ruck provided the on ball brigade with consistent first use of the ball. Tyson Wait, Ben Quast, Chris Povey, Joel Kay and Nathan Smith held the backline together and provided a lot of rebound from half back and made it hard for the opposition to score.

In the grand final we played Southern Districts and this was a closely fought battle right to the end. Our team play, pressure on the opposition and ability to impact the contest was a feature of our play all carnival and this came through in the grand final.

Matt Altmann up forward provided a big target and his marking was outstanding and finished with 3 goals, Tylah Saunders as a rover provided the hardness at the contest and created run from the middle of the ground. Our full back Ben Quast and half back Tyson Wait made it hard for the opposition to score and provided plenty of run from the backline. On ball players Simon Berkefeld and James Papotny continually moved the ball forward from the middle of the ground and along with Richie O’Grady on his wing gave the side the run and carry of the ball needed.

The MSE teams focus was to win one quarter at a time and not let the opposition any momentum and they were able to do this nd went in at ¾ time with a three point advantage. In the last quarter the Southern Districts were able to break away only for the MSE team to come back at them and with time running out were unable to hit the front and lost by six points.

Coach Justin McConnell and his support staff would be happy with the efforts put in by all players over the whole carnival. We have been the most consistent zone in the past two years and need to continue to work hard and next year take the next step and win the carnival.

Tyson Wait won the inaugural Don McSweeney medal as the best player for the carnival and the following players made the team of the carnival: Adam Davey (Ruck), Tylah Saunders (Rover), Matt Altmann (Full Forward), Tyson Wait (Half Back Flank), Joel Kay (Back Pocket) and Simon Berkefeld (Interchange)

Western Border Under 17 Netball - Team Report – State Finals of the Victorian Zone Championships Sunday 24th June, 2012The team were placed in Pool B for the round robin games of the Victorian Championships. They were to meet Mid Gippsland, Vic Churches, Bellarine, Bendigo and Goulburn Valley. All teams were new to us with no idea of how they would match up with the Western Border girls. Our first game was against Mid Gippsland. It took a little while to get accustomed to the fast pace of 8 minute halves after being in Adelaide and playing 15 minute halves. Mid Gippsland came out quicker and stronger and led the first half 4 goals to 3. Western Border made changes and won the half 6 to 4 and therefore won the match 9 to 8.Our next game was against Vic Churches who also came out at a blistering pace. The scores were level at half time 6 all. Western Border again made changes but unfortunately Vic Churches capitalised on the pace of the game and Border lost 10 to 15.Bellarine were the next opponent and the girls knew they needed to secure a win to have the slightest chance to make the top 2. They outscored Bendigo 6 to 1 in the first half proving they were up to the task. Bendigo came back fighting in the second half outscoring Border 8 to 4, but with the strong lead in the first half Border came out victors by 1.Our next game was against Bendigo which we knew was going to be tough. Bendigo outscored Western Border in the first half 8 to 5 which meant we had a lot to peg back in such a short time. The girls fought hard in the second half taking timely intercepts in defence enabling the girls to stay level with Bendigo. The rocky first half meant we lost by 3.Our last game was against ladder leaders Goulburn Valley. We knew we had to win this to have any chance at all to make top 2. Goulburn Valley were just stronger and more accurate netballers (with their passing and shooting). They outscored Western Border 8 to 4 in the first half and 6 to 2 in the second. This was the toughest game for the day but the girls never gave up and continued to play solid netball holding their heads high.Well done and congratulations to the 9 girls that travelled to Melbourne. The squad was Shanae Guthrie, Abbey Shannon, Emma Pelham-Thorman, Marlee Gartlan, Malinda Markeiwicz, Morgan Amy, Melinda Squire, Sophie Thornton and Remy Grant. A big thankyou to Liz Markeiwicz for being Team Manager and Deb Gartlan for scoring and all the parents who came and supported the girls throughout the tournament. It has been an honour to coach the 17 and Under Western Border Team for 2012, each player representing the league with pride and respect.

STATE FINALS OF THE VICTORIAN ZONE CHAMPIONSHIPS - Under 17’s

SATURDAY, July 7, 2012 ‘THE WESTERN’

Western Border 13 and Under squad team earned the right to contest the Victorian Association Championships Final after winning the Western Region minor round convincingly. These finals were played at the State Netball Centre in Melbourne on Sunday 24th June. This team had also recently won the South Australian Country Championships held in Adelaide on the June Long Weekend, going through undefeated. With the format of the carnival comprising two pools of 6 and playing 2x 8minute halves with no half time break the pressure was on to perform consistently and win as many games as possible. The top two teams from each pool then contested the semi finals with the winners playing off in the Grand Final. The day did not start well with a convincing loss to Cranbourne South West (7-13). The team was unsettled and made errors in all areas of the court and although the second half was better the poor first half was too much to overcome. This was the first game over two carnivals where space and consistency were compromised. Cranbourne were to be the eventual winners of the carnival.Match two was a better result with an 11 to 8 goal win against Traralgon. In the third match of the day our defence line up came up across a male player in goals who was tall, accurate and the focal point in the circle. After a shaky start the team regained control and went into the second half one goal down. Traralgon got a two goal jump and all players worked hard to reverse this and for much of the half the scores were neck and neck. Despite several opportunities to secure the win Traralgon won by one goal. The game against Murray was a convincing win 13 to 8 and with two wins and two losses the chance of making finals was slim. In the final match of the day the team to beat was Bendigo (who were placed second). This was an exciting match with the score-line see-sawing. All players worked hard and there were opportunities both in defence and attack where a win was possible however at full time Bendigo held a one goal lead.Despite not making the finals it was pleasing to note that the two teams who contested the Grand Final were Bendigo and Cranbourne, both from Western Border’s pool and against whom they were highly competitive.Their coach, Suzie Mitchell was extremely pleased with the commitment and progress all players demonstrated over the three carnivals to play quality disciplined netball. The Western Border Netball League should feel extremely proud of the results and the manner in which the players conducted themselves both on and off the court. The team comprised: Emily Pietsch (North) Brenna McKay, Lauren Pike, Sara Smith, Mary Wilson (East) Tayla Falconer, Olivia Cottier (Portland) and Keah Lynch (Millicent). Unfortunately due to State netball commitments Olivia Dukalskis (South) was not available.
