I am excited to say that we have officially kicked off the Chapter’s 2016-2017 year. It has been a pleasure to work with the members of our phenomenal Board of Governors and Chapter Committees throughout the summer to plan a terrific year for all of you! One of the most value-added projects we have committed to executing this year is providing our members with free, high-quality, relevant CPE trainings via Webinar Meetings. As of August, our Chapter has joined forces with the Rochester IIA and local ISACA Chapters to provide all of our members with just that! Make sure to keep a lookout for webinar-related announcements in the near future. Our first one-hour webinar will be held during the month of October. In addition to the availability of webinars, our Board of Governors and Chapter Committees have brought a lot of great new ideas to the table! I’d like to specifically thank Slaven Dreno of M&T for all of his hard work as Advocacy Chair; Slaven is new to this role, but he has already taken great initiative to advocate for our Chapter, our members, and our profession! Make sure to read more about the networking opportunities Slaven has found with Buffalo Niagara 360, a local company that “aims to create an inclusive and collaborative network of resources that can empower talented individuals to achieve their goals for professional growth and success.Another member of our Board that deserves a huge thank you is Ellen Janicki of M&T Bank. Ellen has done a wonderful job supporting the WNY Chapter for the last 4 years maintaining our website, social media accounts, and member surveys. We are so happy to recognize Ellen as the member spotlight for the month of September to celebrate her many contributions to the Chapter and to the Internal Audit profession! Please join me in congratulating Ellen and thanking her for all of her hard work. As you know from the recent flyer that went out, the Chapter’s first CPE event of the year, Auditing Corporate Culture, is fast approaching. Mike Buziak, Events Planning Co-Chair, has arranged for a group of Advisory Services Professionals from Ernst & Young, who all come highly recommended by a local General Auditor of a large Buffalo-based company, to present to the Chapter on September 28th at Tewksbury Lodge. I am personally excited to learn more about auditing corporate culture since it is an increasingly important area of focus for Internal Auditors and because it was one of the topics highlighted during the Pulse of the Profession Update this year at the IIA Leadership Conference. WNY Member Spotlight

Ellen Janicki, CIA, CRMA Ellen has worked with the WNY IIA for the past 4 years. As the Website and Survey Administration Chair since 2012, Ellen has made tremendous efforts to improve our online and social media presence and has helped make information easily available to all of our chapter members through her work. Ellen was born and raised in Amherst and received a Masters and Undergraduate degree in accounting from the University of Buffalo. Her Masters degree in accounting specialized in the internal auditing track. During the summer after graduating with her Undergraduate degree, Ellen obtained an internship within the Enterprise Risk Management department at Freed Maxick CPAs. After graduating with her Masters degree, Ellen continued her career at Freed Maxick as a staff consultant. After two years at Freed Maxick, Ellen obtained a position within M&T Bank’s Internal Audit department as an Associate Senior Auditor. Her career with M&T has continued with Ellen currently holding the position of Senior Auditor leading audits within the Commercial and Risk Management portfolios. Ellen also currently is a Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) and also has her Certification in Risk Management Assurance (CRMA). Outside of work she is heavily involved in sports leagues, her favorite being volleyball. Ellen also enjoys playing the piano in her spare time.

Thank you for your hard work, Ellen!

Student Spotlight The WNY IIA would like to congratulate two University at Buffalo students who were recently recognized by the IIA for the following achievements:

Kelsey Messer, CPA, CIA, CRMA The candidate who scored the highest in the CIA exam will receive the William S. Smith Award, named in honor of William S. Smith, CIA, The IIA's first chairman of the Board of Regents. In 2015, a total of 55,811 candidates took the CIA exam and 3,690 took a specialty exam. For a complete listing of award recipients, click HERE.

Matthew Stollerman The Internal Audit Foundation Board of Trustees established this award in June 2000 as a tribute to the memory of Esther R. Sawyer and her contributions to and support of the profession of internal auditing. Although Esther Sawyer was not an internal auditor, she was a gracious ambassador who enjoyed explaining the role of modern internal auditing to those she met. She was an advocate for internal audit curricula in colleges and universities and promoted internal auditing as a lifetime career.
