Discover the talents of Iowa artists as they launch their careers in the world of visual arts through the Emerging Iowa Artists (EIA) program. The program is generously underwritten by premier sponsor Principal® to provide Iowa-

resident students who are currently enrolled in, or recently graduated from, a college or university the opportunity to exhibit and sell their work at one of the nation’s most decorated arts festivals.

During the Festival, the Awards Jury will select one artist to receive the coveted Leysens Family Best of Show Award. The award comes with a $1,000 cash prize and an automatic invitation to the 2020 Des Moines Arts Festival.

Hubbell Homes, and Des Moines Arts Festival® are proud to host the Student Art Exhibition (SAE). The SAE is a program that spotlights the creativity of children K-12 attending schools in central Iowa. Students’ artistic achieve-ments will be on display at the festival, June 25-27at the corner of 13th Street and Locust Street.

All Student Art Exhibition participants and their family and teachers are invited to the Visionary Artist Cere-mony on Saturday June 26, 2021 on the Hy-Vee Main Stage (located on the West side of 12th St., between Lo-cust St. and Grand Ave.). This year, the ceremony will be divided into two sessions by grade. The cremony for students in Kindergarten through 4th grade, will begin at 10:00a.m. The ceremony for students in 5th through 12th grade, will begin at 11:45a.m. During each session, student artists will be called on stage to receive a me-dallion of appreciation in recognition of their artistic efforts.

Greater Des Moines Habitat for Humanity joins the festival once again for a live, on-site Habitat home build managed by more than 120 Habitat volunteers. On Friday and Saturday, festival guests can stop and watch the construction of the home’s exterior frame; they can also join the excitement at the nearby Paint-A-Stud booth, where they’ll have the opportunity to paint or write a message of encouragement on the studs that will be used to construct the home’s basement.

On Sunday, guests can check out the home’s finished exterior via a walk-through tour. The completed house frame will be moved to its permanent lot at 12:01 on Monday morning, where it will ultimately be purchased by the recipi-ent Habitat homebuyer client, in this case a refugee family of nine. This is the fifth year for the festival to stage a live homebuild in partnership with Greater Des Moines Habitat for Humanity.

Calling all doodlers! One of the festival’s don’t-miss activities is the at the popular BOOM Art! interactive mural project sponsored by MidAmerican Energy Company, which offers festival guests (including kids AND kids at heart) the chance to contribute to an enormous coloring-book styled mutal; as each 10-foot section comes to live, the mural is hoisted up to 30 feet in the air by MidAmerican’s zero-emission/all-electric bucket trucks. Markers provided, no skills required, and don’t be surprised if MidAmerican mascots Sniffie the Sniffasauras and Louie the Lightning Bug drop by to join the fun. After the festival, the final mural (which can extend up to 100 feet) displays at events around the community, including the Iowa State Fair and the Downtown Farmers’ Market.
