30th ANNIVERSARY
GALA
You are cordially invited to
Goodwin House Bailey’s
Crossroads celebration of 30
years of service. This will be
an elegant evening carefully
crafted to show appreciation
of our legacy and anticipation
of a bright future. Please save
the date for Thursday,
October 26. More details
coming soon!
FROM ELZEVIER TO GOODWIN HOUSE
All are invited to “From Elzevier to Goodwin House” a tribute to
the
importance of books in our lives, books that inform us, and
those that record
the history of our families. Harry Amos will present a variety
of recently
repaired collections of resident books. He has been repairing
books since
1941, particularly at the Arlington County Library where he
repaired around
3,000 books. During this program, we will also recognize the
first graduates
of the “Pointer School of Book Repair”
Join us in the Formal Parlor on Wednesday, October 4, at 2:00
p.m. for this
program. Repaired books will be available to view starting at
10:00 a.m. in
the Formal Parlor. Residents are also encouraged to bring an
older book of
theirs with a story behind it!
HIDDEN HISTORY OF ARLINGTON COUNTY
Join Author Charlie Clark for a presentation on his newest book
on the
History of Arlington County . Monday, October 2, at 3:00 p.m. in
the
Auditorium.
Arlington County is a vibrant part of the Washington, D.C.,
community.
Many notable figures made their home in the area, like Supreme
Court
chief justice Warren Burger, General George "Blood 'n' Guts"
Patton and a
beauty queen who almost married crooner Dean Martin. The drama
of
Virginia's first school integration unfolded in Arlington
beginning in the
late 1950s. In the 1960s, two motorcycle gangs clashed in public
at a
suburban shopping center. Local author, historian and "Our Man
in
Arlington" Charlie Clark uncovers the vivid, and hidden, history
of a
capital community.
MOUNT VERNON BAND OKTOBERFEST
CONCERT
Join us for this seasonal performance by the Mount Vernon German
Band
on Tuesday, October 3, at 7:30 p.m. in the Auditorium.

Jane Coughran, with her elderly cat Callie, moved into
Crossroads apartment 618 from Old Town,
Alexandria, on Wednesday, September 20. Except for a brief time
in DC during WWII, she grew up in
California, where she graduated from Berkeley High School in
1956, and from Stanford University in 1960.
She spent her junior year in Spain at the University of Madrid.
Although she had a degree in Hispanic-
American Studies, she was offered a job in Rome with an Italian
bank and later worked there for an
American company that was building listening sites along the
Iron Curtain. In 1964, she returned to the U.S.
to work for Olivetti in New York, developing marketing exhibits
for their business machines and traveling
around the country to set up the exhibits. When Olivetti phased
out its American subsidiary, she joined Time
Life Books as an historical researcher. Again her job involved
much exciting travel. In 1976, the company
relocated to Alexandria, and Jane came with them as a picture
editor and writer of illustrated histories until
Time-Life Books closed in 2000. She then worked as a contract
writer and volunteered as a docent at Carlyle
House. She is a member of the Armenia Sister City Committee and
a volunteer with THIS for Diplomats
(The Hospitality and Information Service), an organization that
welcomes foreign diplomats posted in
Washington, DC.
Jane is quite familiar with GHBC, as her parents lived here. She
is interested in our various activities,
especially the fitness center, the pool, the game room, and
internationally oriented seminars. She enjoys
shooting pool and playing ping pong, although she claims to an
expert at neither. She would like to become
involved in an Italian-speaking lunch group. She loves classical
and Latin music, musical theater, and books.
She is a big fan of Stanford football.
FITNESS CENTER NEWS
The women’s locker room renovation will begin on Monday, October
2, with completion
anticipated at the end of November. During this time, women in
the fitness center will be able to use the
family changing room if a lifeguard is on the pool deck and the
clinic and rehabilitation department
bathrooms. It is important that women exit the pool deck area
when the lifeguard is scheduled to leave to
keep our community in compliance. We are sorry for this
inconvenience. Ladies may wear appropriate
robes or cover-ups over swimsuits to return to apartments to
shower given the large number of women
affected by this temporary closure.
Total Body Class- During the fir st week of construction of the
women’s locker room, while tile is
removed, Total Body class normally meeting in the Fitness Center
on Monday, Wednesday and Friday
will be held in the auditorium. Some classes that normally meet
in the fitness center could be moved to
the aerobics room to reduce interference from construction
noise.
Missing Headphones- Have you seen our headphones? We are missing
a number of headphones in
the Fitness Center. Please check your apartments to see if you
mistakenly wore a set home. We will
continue to keep a few on hand but residents are encouraged to
buy their own headphones or ear buds
for sanitary purposes. Most standard headsets will fit the
iPods. Unfortunately wireless Bluetooth
devices will only work with your phones. Please address
questions about purchasing headphones to
Sherry at ext. 7331.

GREEN TEAM MOVIE - GREAT YELLOWSTONE THAW
Episode 2 of the BBC’s “Great Yellowstone Thaw”
returns us to the spectacular setting of the Rocky
Mountains and verdant valleys where wildlife must
deal with one of the toughest springs on Earth. The
most dramatic event – the thaw – sends a torrent of
meltwater cascading down the mountains, swelling
rivers and lakes. A team of scientists and cameramen
track the animals, observing how they cope. We
actually get inside a beaver lodge where the hungry
young scuffle over twigs and the adults actually wash
the winter bedding. The soft, still downy Great Gray Owl chicks
must face a jump of 30 feet from their nest
before their wings are quite ready for flight. Wednesday,
October 4, at 7:15 p.m., Auditorium. 2017, 55
minutes.

I have been excited to learn about the many volunteer activities
residents have been
involved with. However, I want to make sure all residents
receive credit for the
hours they have completed. Since we are reaching the end of the
fiscal year, I am
looking to get a final count for all the volunteer hours
completed for the period of
(November 1, 2016 through September 30, 2017). I have created an
Annual Volunteer Log that I will
distribute this week to help you keep track. Extras will be
available on my desk. Please make sure to submit
your Annual Volunteer Log to the volunteer office by Friday,

COMMUNITY CORNER
How many of us know what a porte cochere is? While completing
the construction on the
Pointe and main entrance at GHBC, these two French words kept
coming up. They would
roll off Linda’s tongue as if we would all know what she was
talking about. Well, it turns
out she was referring to our front entrance. You see, a porte
cochere (“coach door” in
English…pronounced (port.kor’jer/) is in Western architecture,
either of two elements found in large
private or public buildings, popular in the Renaissance era. It
was originally an entrance or a gateway to a
building large enough to permit large coaches to be driven
through it. These gateways are common
features of homes and palaces built during the reigns of Kings
Louis X1V and XV of France. Later, the
term was applied to a porch roof built over the driveway of an
entrance to a building. This roof had to be
high enough to accommodate a large carriage or other wheeled
vehicles since its purpose is to provide
shelter for those getting into or out of the vehicle. Aren’t we
fortunate to be able to get into or out of any
means of transportation without worrying about getting wet! I
have just proven to myself, and perhaps to some of you, that we are
never too old to learn!
Dottie Moser, Resident
Special Announcement: There is still availability to go to the
Portrait Gallery to view the exhibition One
Life: Sylvia Plath. The trip takes place this Wednesday, October
4. The bus departs GHBC at 10:45 a.m. and
departs the museum at 1:15 p.m. The sign-up sheet is in the
Business Center.
