LANSING The look of pride onManistee High School teacher/Youth inGovernment adviser Stacey Andrews-Ramseys face spoke volumes as she lis-tened to her students recall the time they
spent at the 2012 conference in Lansing.Andrews-Ramsey knew that the expe-rience is one that helps turn todays stu-dents into tomorrows leaders. A total of15 students from Manistee High Schooltook part in Youth In Government this
year, and she said this talented groupturned quite a few heads in Lansing.
This is one of the largest groups wehave had in years, Andrews-Ramseysaid. It is a lot more fun when this manygo, but for me it makes it harder to keeptrack of where they all are because theyare so active. Manistee is well-knowndown there for what we do.
Attending the conference this yearfrom Manistee High School were Destiny
Blake, Cameron Blevins, Chris Blevins,Michael Bond, Sarah Bottrell, McKennaBramble, Hannah Davis, Annie DeVoe,Emma Hornkohl, Jordan MacArthur,
Morgan Ott, Abigale Racine, MichaelStypa, Jessie Switalski and Jenna Vincent.
More than 900 students from all overMichigan attended Youth in Governmentthis year, making it the largest turnoutever. Students hold offices in several dif-ferent House, Senate and other govern-
ment offices, doing the tasks that arenormally performed by those elected offi-
Destiny Blake served as com-mittee clerk in the Green House ofRepresentatives.
The entire Manistee Youth in Government group dress up for the big banquet anddance that was held during their stay in Lansing.

cials. They were broken upinto the white, red and blueHouse and Senates this
year and the learning expe-rience was priceless for thestudents.
I was part of the RedHouse of Representativesand we debated bills andpassed amendments that
would eventually moveon to the Red Senate,Bramble said. It was defi-nitely an interesting expe-
rience. It showed me howmuch goes into passing
a bill, and gave me a realappreciation for our repre-sentatives jobs.
Fellow Youth inGovernment studentMichael Stypa agreed thatit showed him how hardthe legislators work. Healso added they had theopportunity to meet with101st State Rep. Ray Franz,R-Onekama, while they
were in Lansing. We had meetings that
started at 8 a.m. and wewould go all day with aone-hour break until 5p.m., Stypa said. Rep.Franz talked about whatkind of bills that were
being discussed, and justgave us a real good insightinto what was happening atthe capitol.
Stypa was a com-mittee chair and servedin the White House ofRepresentatives. He said
being on the committeegave him a keen insightinto what transpired in get-
ting a bill out on the Housefloor for consideration.
We would be in a smallgroup of seven to 15 peo-ple, and we would be theones that first choose the
bills that get passed on tothe House and the Senate.
After that, I moved backinto the House where we
would debate bills and passthem on to the senate.
Jordan MacArthur wasa step up the ladder being amember of the Blue Senate. He commented on how it
was interesting to watchthe process of sending the
bills on to the governor forher signature.
What impressedhim about Youth inGovernment was the wayeveryone was willing to dis-cuss the issues. It was anexperience that led to himmaking many new friendsalong the way.
You could pretty muchwalk into any room thatyou wanted if the door wasopen, and everyone talkedto each other, MacArthur
said. I actually have 10to 15 phone numbers ofpeople I met down there,so it was pretty fun.
Bramble added thatthe ability to discuss anddebate issues of interest

Lansing It is spring-time, and today animal
ealth officials at theMichigan Departmentof Agriculture and RuralDevelopment (MDARD)are reminding Michiganowners that vaccinatingpets and livestock protectsthem from diseases, even
f they are exposed to annfected animal or other
vector of disease transmis-sion such as mosquitosand ticks.
Vaccinating, deworm-ng, and routine animalealth activities shouldccur in the spring beforeoving to sales, exhibi-
ions, or even before goingn vacation, said Stateeterinarian Dr. Stevenalstead. State law
lso requires all dogs sixonths and older to be
icensed; to get a license,n owner must show proofhat a veterinarian hasaccinated the dog againstabies, and that the vac-ine is current. Each yeare remind animal ownersf the importance of vac-inating, which not onlyrotects the pet, but alsohe food-animal industry.
Core vaccines areecommended for mostets. Additional non-ore vaccines (e.g., felineeukemia, canine kennelough and other vaccines)ay be appropriate if the
nimals are going to petare facilities, kennels, hows where they will beo-mingling. Additionally,et and livestock ownersre encouraged to haveheir veterinarian checkor internal parasites andeartworms.
MDARD recommendswners speak with theirrivate veterinarianegarding the followingaccinations:

In addition, ownershould have the dogshecked for heartwormnd intestinal parasites.ome veterinarians alsoecommend vaccinationgainst leptospirosis andreatment to prevent Lymeisease.

Horses: MDARD man-ates Equine infectiousnemia (EIA) testingf traveling to a publicvent, as part of a sale,r importing a horse intoichigan from another
tate; and owners shouldalk to their veterinarianbout the following vac-ines:nTetanus toxoidnrabies

Horse owners shouldrepare to follow theseips to prevent mosquito-orne illness:
Vaccinate your horses.nexpensive vaccines forEE and WNV are readily
vailable and should be
repeated at least annually. It is never too late to vac-cinate horses. Talk to your
veterinarian for details .nUse approved insect
repellants to protecthorses.
nIf possible, puthorses in stables, stalls,or barns during the primemosquito exposure hoursof dusk and dawn.
nEliminate standingwater, and drain troughsand buckets at least two
times a week.Sheep and goats:nCD-T toxoid pro-
vides three-way protectionagainst enterotoxemia(overeating disease)caused by Clostridiumperfringins types C andD and tetanus (lockjaw)caused by Clostridiumtetani.

proved to be an interest-ing aspect of Youth inGovernment.
It was nice as youcould talk to anyone aboutany issues that were goingon or any bills that were
being debated in the sen-ate, Bramble said. Theywere really passionateabout politics for the state.Sometimes people backhere might not keep upwith the issues that much, but down there, they reallyknew what was going on.You could talk freely aboutanything that was goingon.
Blake was in the GreenHouse of Representatives, and served as a commit-tee clerk, recording whattranspired at the meetings.
I wrote down theamendments that werebeing attached to bills inour committee, Blakesaid.
Some of the hot top-ics of discussion this yearwere focused around gaymarriage and childhoodobesity. Bramble pointedout how some thingsdiscussed at Youth inGovernment actually makeit into law.
Last year the big issuewas bullying legislation,Bramble said.
Manistees MichaelBond, who served in themedia, won a special honorthis year in producing the
best written story dur-ing the conference. Hereceived an award for hisefforts. Other studentsholding key positions wereJenna Vincent who was acommittee chair and AnnieDeVoe who served as edi-tor of the electronic press.
Although the confer-ence took on the seriousaspect of dealing withissues and debates, it alsohad a fun side to it for thestudents. One night, theyheld a talent show wherestudents had the oppor-
tunity to take part, andanother night they had a
banquet and dance. All of those who partici-
pated said they would rec-ommend it to younger stu-dents coming up and thatthey gained confidence intheir ability to speak theirmind and before people. It was an opportunity fortodays students to takethe first step to becomingtomorrows leaders.

Customer Testimonial
I have asked my customers what directory they relyon, most answer PDSs West Shore Book.
My ads have resulted in more calls and walk in business, especially
from the hotels and motels in the area, I also get compliments on the
layout of my ad and the ease of reading it.
I recommend the book for the great customer service. The sta is very
friendly and knowledgeable about small business and the problems
that we face.. Its a local company, with local support, the jobs they
provide are Michigan based.
