Community/Arts
For a second straight year ve Kootenay painters, Jenny Baillie, Brigitte Desbois, Louise Drescher, Stephanie Gauvin, and Mirja Va-hala will be kicking o the Christ-mas season with their December art exhibition.
e artwork featured evolved from a seven-day saga in the Rocky Mountains this past sum-mer, where the artists immersed themselves to capture onto canvas the grandeur of Mount Assini-boine.
‘It was an epic painting experi-ence,’ said Louise Drescher. “An eight hour hike to our rustic cabin on the rst day, followed by six days of trekking our art gear to various view points within this park of lakes, bears, spired cli s and vertical mountains.”
“We were all mesmerized by the sight of the legendary 12,000-foot-high Mt. Assiniboine re ecting into Lake Magog”, said Mirja Va-hala.
Jenny Baillie agreed, calling it a perfect mountain to paint.
“We even enjoyed a tug-of-war with a huge marmot determined to drag away my pack while I painted,” said Brigitte Desbois.
“Our painters group has de -
nitely evolved to another level since our rst air trip to Mount Carlyle,” explained Rossland art-ist Stephanie Gauvin, who spear-headed the group.
“We believe we can continue to show, through our paintings, the majesty of Canadian landscape. It is our intention to paint as a group again in 2014.”
e artists would like to thank the Arts Councils of Rossland, Castlegar, and Nelson and the Columbia Kootenay Cultural Alli-ance for their generous support of this project.
e art show is set for Decem-ber 1-15 with an opening recep-tion on Friday, November 29 from 6-9 p.m. e show and reception takes place at the Rossland Gal-lery, 2004 Columbia Avenue in Rossland.

EntertainmentRossland hosts 14th annual film festival
Rossland is once again pulling back the curtain on moun-tain culture with the biggest little film fes-tival around.
The 14th annu-al Teck Rossland Mountain Film Festival kicked off Wednesday and will continue through the weekend with a series of talented videogra-phy and story telling that can be taken in at various hot spots in the Golden City.
“It’s tricky to put the perfect mix to-gether but I think what we end up with is something that has some really nice lo-cal representation, but also some of that international inter-est as well,” explained Aerin Guy of Spac-eRace Digital Inc, a web development and marketing com-pany helping pro-mote the event.
“I think especial-ly with the little bit of snow we’ve had in the last couple of days, it’s perfect tim-ing for it for sure,” she added.
“I think everyone’s getting really excited about getting their boots on and getting their skis tuned and getting out this year.”
The five-day festi-val touts an array of films for your view-ing pleasure, with some local content rounding out inter-
national contribu-tions.
Local fans will be pleased to know that they can check out one of Rosslander Andre Nutini’s films “The Lost,” described as a “no-rules ski movie” produced by Legs of Steel, tonight (starting at 9 p.m.) at the Flying Steam Shovel.
But it’s not just about the films. La-dies are invited to pull out their little black dress Friday night for the Teck Mountain Gala and Silent Auction in the Ross Thompson room at the Prestige; doors open at 6 p.m.
The no-minors event includes a complimentary glass of wine, a selection of appetizers, moun-tain culture films, a performance by Brad Mackay and a silent art auction featuring local artists’ work.
Entries are still open for the silent auction, which will see all proceeds go to the Rossland Food Bank.
“Artists will be giving their art away for a good cause and they do get a little bit of exposure from it,” said Guy.
“The pieces will be featured on the web-site and through our social media chan-nels, and plus at an event that a lot of people come out to.”
Saturday’s big pro-duction day includes
a by-donation or non-perishable food item family matinee at the Miners’ Hall at 3 p.m.
One film featured,“Crossing The Ice,” is a must-see story that won the Banff Mountain Film Festival People’s Choice, said Guy. The film follows the jour-ney of two men drag-ging their food and shelter across 1,140 kilometres of barren ice as they set out on a journey across Ant-arctica to the South Pole and back.
Back by popular demand, the REEL Youth Film Festival runs Saturday under the festival title from noon until 2:30 p.m. at the Miners’ Hall.
The international film screening in-cludes work from Greater Trail youth James Klemmensen and Liam Barnes (“Barefoot”), Eric Gonzales (“Seat-tle and Aviation) and Jordan Strobel (“High Rise- Ski Edit”).
Due to Rossland Council for Arts and Culture changing ad-ministrative hands, film submissions were only opened to youth who previous-ly submitted work to the U19 Film Festi-val, explained new program adminis-trator Demitri Le-sniewicz.
The Rossland Council for Arts and Culture is again plan-
ning a U19 Film Fes-tival for early May, which Lesniewicz ex-pects to be a success if local youth interest in film making is any indication.
“I met Eric Gonza-les the other day; he was one of our win-ners from the U19 Film Festival last year,” he said. “He is a talented filmmaker and a very motivated young man at that.
“He is currently filming the new Grey expansion for Red Resort - he is also do-ing work for the City of Rossland, and the City of Trail.”
The festival night will be capped off at 7 p.m. with (no-minors) Nelson and District Credit Union Saturday Mountain Film and Party, fea-turing sounds from the Funk Hunters. One of Canada’s bus-iest electronic acts is landing in Rossland for the night with their arsenal of four turntables, high en-ergy and lively visu-als for a mash up of music, art and mov-ie-making.
New to this year’s festival is a film and speaker forum on Sunday, the last day the festival runs.
The discussion at 3 p.m. at the Prestige will be led by a repre-sentative from Teck Trail Operations and Selkirk College will follow the screen-ing of “Gold Fever,” a witness account of
the arrival of Gold-corp Inc. to a remote Guatemalan village.
“(The discussion) will tie between what’s happened in that Guatemalan community to sort of the first-hand per-spective of people in our local communi-ty,” said Guy.

Teck Trail Opera-tions will pay a penalty of $210,000 under the Fish-eries Act and the Environ-mental Management Act for discharging more pH e uent into the Columbia River than it was permit-
ted to do back in 2011, ac-cording to a news release. Most of this money, all but a $10,000 ne, will be split evenly between the pro-vincial Habitat Conserva-tion Trust Foundation and the federal Environmental Damages Fund for habitat conservation in Columbia River watersheds.
“At Teck we are com-mitted to meeting high environmental standards and take incidents such as this very seriously,” noted Greg Belland, Trail Op-erations general manager. “Since the incident we have taken a number of steps to prevent a recur-rence including enhancing
training and procedures, installing a new treatment system and implementing new control mechanisms to ensure discharge water is within applicable stan-dards.”
e penalty is due to an incident that occurred on March 5, 2011, when approximately 100 to 300
litres of high pH solu-tion was discharged into a drain at the mining gi-ant’s War eld operation and subsequently drained into the Columbia River, resulting in an exceeding of the permit. e high pH solution used to con-dition the boiler water was accidentally deposited to a
drain that discharged into the river before it could be treated.
When the incident oc-curred, the pH for the measured period rose to 9.1 when the facility is ob-ligated to stay within 6.2-8.5 under direction of the Ministry of Environment.

Connecting Names and Places
Thirty-sixth in a series on West Kootenay/Boundary
place names
In June 1897, Joseph Pres-ley Clubb of Missouri (1850-1924) filed a pre-emption on the West Arm of Kootenay Lake, about a mile down-stream of today’s Longbeach.
His quarter section became known as Clubb Landing. The earliest known use of the name is in the Nelson Daily Miner of January 6, 1900. Ac-cording to Kootenay Outlet Reflections, after proving up his pre-emption, Clubb sold it to Hong Ming Chong of Nel-son and moved to Queens Bay and then Boswell.
Chong continued to clear the land, planting strawber-ries among the rocks and stumps, and in turn sold to Henry Crozier Smith and H.H. Sewell.
Clubb Landing was often misspelled Club Landing, and that’s what the postal author-ities called it when an office opened on July 1, 1906. It closed after postmaster John P. Woodward resigned on March 7, 1907 and departed for Arizona with Sewell to grow alfalfa.
Henry Smith, however, stayed, and coaxed brother Burrard Archibald Smith out from England to join him. The Smiths built a log float in front of their house which was dubbed Smith’s Landing on CPR timetables. The Smith family remains connected to the area to this day: Bur-rard’s son Eric moved to Nel-
son three years ago with wife Greta, but their family still has five acres at Longbeach.
Joe Clubb died in Kam-loops and was buried there. His landing is not well re-membered.
Coltern
This ghost town northeast of Greenwood was originally and otherwise known as Oro Dinero — Spanish for “gold money” — after a mine of the same name. It was also called Oro Denoro, Oro Denora, and just Denoro,
The mine dated to late 1897 but the townsite was first men-tioned in the Cascade Record of February 10, 1900: “The new towns of Oro Denoro and Summit City will soon have telephone and post offices.”
A report on the post office application filed that month stated the rival owners of the adjacent townsites were try-ing to combine them. Postal inspector W.H. Dorman said
if that was accomplished, he would recommend approval, “but at present the post of-fice is wanted more to boom a townsite than from actual necessity.”
The Denoro post office didn’t open until May 1, 1908. It closed September 30, 1910 and then reopened as Coltern on October 1, 1917 only to close again August 31, 1919. The origin of Coltern is a mystery but it appears to have been adopted when a school opened in 1916.
Anna Moore, a student in 1919, recalled in Alice Glan-ville’s Schools of the Bound-ary: “I did start at Coltern school but the town was called Oro Denora. The settlement depended on the Emma mine. A branch of the CPR ran from Eholt to Oro Denora and the station was also called Col-tern.”
One other odd note: in 1910, the civic directory listed Denoro’s J.A. McMillan as a “lighthouse keeper.”
‘Clubs’ need membership to surviveGreG NesteroffWest Kootenay Advertiser
This postcard mailed to England on October 26, 1906 bears a rare Club Landing postmark. The message reads: “Dear Grand-pa: Am getting on very well. I am in the place where you thought I should do well all amongst the fruit. Love George II.”
Artisans from across the West Kootenay region coverged on the Castlgar Community Complex last Friday and Saturday for a very well-patronized craft sale.

ARIES (MAR 21 – APR 20)Sometimes the cycles of change and transformation are long and steady. You should know since you are currently undergoing such a cycle. As powerful as it has already been, it will continue for some time yet, up to two years in fact... This is a metamorphic process. Consciously tuning-in and cooperating with this powerful process is your best bet.
TAURUS (APR 20 – MAY 21)A big invitation to be more cooperative in all your relationships has been sent your way. This may lead to lucrative collaborations and/or heal some rifts that over ambition or assumption may have caused. Deepening commitments to offset tendencies to scatter you focus these days is also ideal. Let the Full Moon in your sign guide your way.
GEMINI (MAY 21 – JUN 21)Bringing your thoughts, ideas, dreams and visions down to earth and into manifestation is a deep theme these days. Yet, the rst step is to be crystal clear about what they are. The clearer and more focused you are the better. Avoid tendencies to spread it too thin and thereby send out mixed messages. Dig a little deeper to nd your vein of gold.
CANCER (JUN 21 – JUL 22)A new quality of creative power is rising in you. You will know it as it shines with the shimmer of individuality. Breaking through and free of conventional thinking and behaviour is the price. This is where doing the work and persevering is extra important. This includes merging your talents and resources with those of others. Advance slowly and deliberately.
LEO (JUL 22 – AUG 23)Some very signi cant events of late close to home have left their indelible mark. These may be described as deep and powerful. At best they are activating a healing process, perhaps of the spiritual sort. This implies the need to dig deeper into your well of faith. Amidst it all, you feel spurred on by ambitions to improve and increase.
VIRGO (AUG 23 – SEP 22)A busy cycle is underway. A varied array of errands, appointments, correspondences, studies and ventures are keeping you busy. Many of these unexpected are also leading you into new territory. With such a steep learning curve underway these days you prob-ably have to step it up to keep pace. Expect and accept this as the new norm.
LIBRA (SEP 22 – OCT 22)A steady process of building upon new foundations continues. These are linked to increasing your personal power, position and/or earning potential. Working diligently behind the scenes is featured. This includes new tools, increased ef ciency and some rearrangements in your home and/or of ce. Do the work and your con dence levels will soar.
SCORPIO (OCT 22 – NOV 21)The pioneering spirit is leading you into new territory. This is causing you to work harder to push through any blocks and barriers within and without. Fortunately, your focus is extra sharp these days. Yet you are also focused on the bigger picture and the long term. Entertaining new creative angles and possibilities is featured.
SAGITTARIUS (NOV 21 – DEC 21)A steady ow of endings continue. That new beginnings and rebirth are certain to follow, even simultaneously. Mixed blessings are likely. A deep healing process is also implied. Consolidating new foundations is featured. Yet, you have to be willing to do the work. This includes obtaining new tools, training and techniques.
CAPRICORN (DEC 21 – JAN 19)A powerful new momentum has begun. It involves communications, key meetings and research. Others will feel the intensity of your expressions. Though deep and potent they may also be perceived as beautiful. Meanwhile, you feel inspired to invest somehow. Opportunities to expand your scope and reach are available but you have to be assertive.
AQUARIUS (JAN 19 – FEB 19)A major new cycle has begun for you. Though it may prove challenging the rewards and increase in personal power will be there as long as you do the work. This will require that you dig deep. The good news is that this work stands to be very creative. This is a call from within to assume new positions of power and authority.
PISCES (FEB 19 – MAR 20)A rare glimpse into the deeper depths is expanding your overall scope and vision. Call it an awakening of or to your higher mind. This will contribute to feelings of creative con dence. Use this impulse to initiate creative projects and give birth to latent talents. Accept the push coming from others as your invitation to get going.

Horoscope for the Week November 15, 2013Horoscope for theTip of the Week: Scorpio time will hand off to Sagittarius on November 21 at 7:48 pm PST. Symbolically, the sign of the archer symbolizes the resurrection after death. The higher mind, higher principles, ethics and moral conduct, broad mindedness, vision, philosophy and the deeper and higher truths that humanity have always and continue to seek and celebrate are all features of Sagittarius. Perhaps above all is the realization that unity is the ultimate truth and that separation and division are simply lower expressions of it represents the Sagittarian credo. The wilds of nature in all its rugged, majestic and pristine beauty represent other layers yet. The fact that the archer literally is depicted as pointing its bow-drawn arrow at the Galactic Center symbolizes the ongoing quest to realize higher truths. This center is also symbolic of the heart and of the soul, which are closely linked and which when fully realized in consciousness represent enlightenment. The 9th Zodiac Sign can be associated with number 9 which, in turn, can be succinctly described as symbolizing the ‘humanitarian rebel’. Concern for the welfare of all and acknowledgement that all people are equal beyond all apparent differences is another feature of 9. As well, both number 9 and Sagittarius represent endings and completion. This last month of the year leading up to Winter Solstice should also be recognized as the darkest time of the year. As the saying goes, it is always darkest just before dawn’s light. Yet, there still remain one more week of Scorpio and it too may be seen to hold beauty in the processes of death that it represents. For if it were actually the death of beauty itself, then the vast grandeur of nature which Sagittarius symbolizes would be no more.

EntertainmentJuno-nominated Strumbellas wail through region
The Strumbellas sang and played their hearts out in Nelson and Ross-land last week. The Koo-tenays were lucky to have this Juno nominated band perform to enduring fans. With the dance floor hop-ping at the Spirit Bar in Nelson this six piece folk pop grass band, had no trouble pleasing their new fans.
Based in Toronto, these non-glamorous somewhat farm boy looking indi-viduals (except the pretty female fiddle player) are now taking pop radio by storm with their hit song “End of an Era” from their latest release, their third al-bum titled “We Still Move On Dance Floors.” In the middle of touring all over
Canada and penetrating into the United States this band is definitely on the road to success with their acoustic folk rhythms and tasteful lead guitar and fid-dle work. The drums and bass drive a steady, in the pocket, exhilarating com-mand of traditional beats while the keyboard player, David Ritter plays melodic lines.
Simon, the main song-writer, is so down to earth that he strums his Gibson acoustic on stage in bare feet.
The Strumbellas are in the same league as the American band Kings of Leon but, in my opinion, better, and they’re Cana-dian.
Go check out their mu-sic and website to see and hear more, you will not be disappointed.

Keep the memories of last year’s Sweet 16th festival alive. Re-member morning fog settled in the valley fields, the soothing river as the backdrop to your beach day and the rumble of bass carrying you through the night.
Reunite with your friends at Shambhala Music Festival 2014.
Electronic music culture (EMC) has exploded into the mainstream. Sham-bhala Music Festival stands on its own at the forefront as a unique meeting ground for emerging and established elec-tronic artists alike.
Shambhala Music Festival has nurtured the EMC scene for the last 16 years, bringing people together, often for the first time. You won’t find big-corpo-rate mentality at this festival. It has been family owned, oper-ated and non-spon-sored since its incep-tion.
All six diverse stag-es were born at the Salmo River Ranch. Their evolution each year creates an event unlike any other in the world. Ahead of their time, these stages have hosted acts like Bassnectar and Skrillex before they were household names.
Shambhala Music Festival is located in Salmo, BC from Au-gust 6-11. Shambha-la Music Festival is proud to be a part of the local, Kootenay culture. Each year, Shambhala Music Festival gives back to the surrounding communities through charitable donations; to the Nelson and Sal-mo public libraries for example.

Vitamin C and Lysine Powder Help Prevent Heart Attacks
Why is heart attack the number one killer in this country?
Ninety-nine percent of doctors say it’s due to atherosclerosis (hardening of arteries) and that cholesterol lowering drugs are the primary way to treat it. But I suggest cardiologists have closed minds
and are ignoring facts that could save thousands of North Americans from coronary attack. Years later Dr. Linus Pauling, two-time Noble Prize winner, is ignored for reporting that large amounts of vitamin C and lysine are needed to prevent coronary attacks. Twenty-five years ago Pauling reported that animals make vitamin C and humans do not. That’s why sailors died of scurvy during long sea voyages, but the ship’s cat survived.
Vitamin C is required to manufacture healthy collagen, the glue that holds coronary cells together, just like mortar is needed for bricks. Lysine, like steel rods in cement, makes collagen stronger. Pauling claimed it takes a mere 10 milligrams to prevent scurvy, but several thousand to prevent heart attack.
Williams Stehbens, Professor of Anatomy at Wellington University in New Zealand, proved Pauling was right. Stebhens’ research showed that coronary arteries closest to the heart are under the greatest pressure. This causes collagen to fracture resulting in the formation of a blood clot and death.
Dr. Sydney Bush, an English researcher, has now proved that vitamin C can reverse atherosclerosis. Bush took retinal photographs, then started his patients on high doses of vitamin C and lysine. One year later additional pictures showed atherosclerosis had regressed in retinal arteries.
So what has happened to these monumental findings? Bush, like Semmelweiss, has been ridiculed by cardiologists. One has to ask whether cardiologists, by ignoring his results, are condemning thousands of people to an early coronary heart attack.
Fourteen years ago following my own coronary attack, cardiologists claimed it was sheer madness for me to refuse cholesterol-lowering drugs. Instead, I decided to take high doses of vitamin C plus lysine with breakfast and the evening meal, for several reasons.
I knew that Dr. Graveline, a physician and NASA astronaut, had twice developed transient global amnesia from taking Lipitor. I was also aware that patients have died from CLDs. Others have developed kidney, liver and muscle complications. I also believed the research of Pauling and Stehbens irrefutable. Now, the work of Dr. Bush has convinced me my decision was prudent.
But to take large doses of vitamin C and lysine requires swallowing many pills daily. It’s a tall order for those who dislike swallowing one pill. So for several years I’ve been trying to find a company that would manufacture a combination of vitamin C and lysine powder. Now Medi-C Plus is available at health food stores.
The dosage for the Medi-C Plus combination is one flat scoop with breakfast and the evening meal. Those at greater risk should take one flat scoop three times a day. If high doses cause diarrhea, the dose should be decreased.
This column does not recommend that those taking CLDs should stop them. This is a decision that can only be made by patients and doctors.
Most of today’s, cardiologists are impervious to persuasion. They continue to believe that cholesterol-lowering drugs are the be-all-and-
end-all to prevent heart attack. They’ve been brain-washed by millions of dollars worth of promotion by pharmaceutical companies. It reminds me of the saying that cautions “It’s not what you don’t know what gets you into trouble, it’s the things you know for sure that ain’t so!”
It’s time for cardiologists to have an open mind and stop ignoring this research. As for me – I bet my life on it!

The CTS model is a lighter car, made of high tensile steel. It is stiffer, safer, handles better, and above all, is more efficient. ZACK SPENCER
Cadillac in the rear-view mirror of the European premium brands2014 Cadillac CTS
One auto trend that shows little sign of waning is the move towards more luxury or premium cars by manufactur-ers and consumers alike. As baby boomers age, they have earned the nicer things in life, and the offspring of baby boomers are getting used to the finer things in life, so more automakers are moving upscale. The Europeans do luxury and perfor-mance better than most and the Japa-nese luxury brands have been putting in their time to becoming a real force. But long before the Japanese, there have always been the American luxury brands, with many firsts in features and technology. Established in 1902, Cadillac is one of the oldest, along with Mercedes-Benz, and continues to be General Motor’s flagship in terms of refinement and technology.
Looks The smaller Cadillac ATS was released a year ago and went on to win the North American Car of the Year award. General Motors has taken that platform and elongated it to produce the lightest mid-sized car in its class. It’s a full 173kg lighter than the benchmark BMW 5-Series it competes against, and 34kg lighter than the outgoing car. A lighter car, made of
high tensile steel, is stiffer, safer, handles better and above all is more efficient. What Cadillac didn’t change was the edgy design language they have become known for. The LED accent lights are especially attractive at night and run vertical compared to most cars’ horizontal approach. The longer and lower stance of the CTS makes it look athletic, yet elegant. The one weak area is the back. It lacks the same visual punch as the impressive front grille and headlamps.
Inside The new CTS is lighter than the BMW but it is a bit smaller inside. It’s not as wide and the back seat is a bit shorter. Front seat passengers are treated to plenty of room and a view onto the dash is impressive. The centre console has a touch-screen system called CUE, which has rich colours and striking graphics. The heat, volume and a few other controls are all touch-sen-sitive, meaning they have no dials or switches. The problem is it shows fingerprints and dust against the shiny black plastic.
Drive With a lighter car comes a better perform-ing car, but the heart of any luxury performance car is a solid engine. On this front, Cadillac offers three options and all three have more power than the closest com-petitors. The first is the same 2.0L turbocharged engine used by the ATS. With 272hp it is well above the 240hp offered in the BMW 528i. The
carryover engine is the direct injection 3.6L V6 with 321hp, again more than the 300hp in the 535i. The top of range motor, for now, is the Vsport model with a twin turbocharged version of the 3.6L engine, putting out 420hp. You guessed it, more power than the 400hp found in the V8 550i. The Vsport is only sold as a rear wheel drive car (RWD) where all the others are available with all wheel drive (AWD). The catch is that AWD models come with an 8-speed automatic transmission, but the AWD versions are fitted with a 6-speed unit. The steering offers good feedback to the driver and the suspension is smooth, yet lively, and has a nearly perfect 50/50 weight distribution.
Verdict The price of the CTS ranges from about $51,000 for the base model to $66,000 for the top premium trim level. The Vsport, high performance model is priced at almost $75,000. The Cadillac CTS is not an inexpensive car, but it offers many features like stan-dard heated and vented leather seats, Bose stereo and push button start even on the base model. Compared to some of the other mid-sized luxury sedans it is less expensive, plus it is a worthy car for any driving enthusiast.

B.C. race car driver Che-rie Storms told me she was taking an advanced driver training course to appease her father’s wishes.
She’d been putting it off since teenagedom. That said, her father is an ac-complished racecar driver and a proficient motorist, so you could argue it was an inevitability.
But she had to find the desire in herself first. What
followed, even she didn’t think would happen. She recently took home the championship title for the B Spec series in her Mazda2 for the 2013 race season.
She grew up in a mo-torsports household but it wasn’t until she actually got behind the wheel at the driving course that her mindset changed.
“I was just overwhelmed with all of the technical as-pects that it takes to be a good driver,” she stated.
It’s like what my grade 12 math teacher always said, “Math is not a spec-tator sport.”
There was even a poster on the cubicle wall to re-mind us.
The same thing goes for driving. Except there’s no poster in the cubicle for that!
We need to be an active participant, not a wallflow-er. Anyone who has taken advanced driving courses will know exactly what
Cherie is talking about. It’s not just about know-
ing how to shift gears on a manual transmission without jerking the car, or parallel parking your sedan without curbing the rims. Driving is so much more.
I understand that this mode of transportation is a necessity for many. And it’s something done out of convenience rather than love. Kind of like laundry or grouting the bathroom floor tiles.
Then again, for others, it’s a passion. Myself in-cluded.
Taking a specialized course, whether it’s a track day or a race school isn’t just for wannabe rac-ers. It’s for everyone. And we can all learn if we have an open mind.
We read to keep our mind sharp. We walk/run/work out to keep our bodies active.

The temperature is starting to drop, the leaves are clogging up the streets and snow is beginning to fall in parts in parts of B.C.
Driving in the win-ter season brings challenges no matter which part of the prov-ince you call home. My remarks are aimed chiefly at truck own-ers but the message is common for all: driver and vehicles must be equally prepared.
In winter, braking and stopping vehicles of all kinds is perhaps where most of us get into trouble. The tires play a critical role in stopping the vehicle, and so they need even more care and atten-tion than in the other seasons.
Most SUVs have a passenger car tire classification with M+S stamped on the sidewall, for Mud and Snow and are consid-ered all- season tires. If it is not, your vehi-cle must be fitted with tires suitable for any type of climate, even the most severe ones.
In winter the pres-sure of the tire must also be controlled more frequently.
This is because a re-duction of the outside temperature causes a contraction of the air inside the tire, ac-celerating the normal and gradual pressure loss process by a val-ue around 1-2 PSI for each 5° C decrease in temperature.
Contrary to popular opinion, a lower infla-tion pressure than nor-mal does not improve tire traction on snow. It makes them much more prone to dam-age. Always remember that in any season and with any temperature, insufficient pressure is always the main cause of tire damage.
Use brakes carefully. Brake early. Brake cor-rectly.
It takes more time and distance to stop in icy conditions.
Watch for slippery bridge decks, even when the rest of the pavement is in good condition. Bridge decks will ice up soon-er than the pavement.
Do not use the cruise control in win-ter conditions. Even roads that appear clear can have sudden slippery spots and the short touch of your brakes to deactivate the cruise control fea-ture can cause you to lose control of your vehicle.
Don’t get overcon-fident in your 4x4 ve-hicle. Remember that your four-wheel drive vehicle may help you get going quicker than other vehicles but it won’t help you stop any faster.
Besides, many 4x4 vehicles are heavier than passenger vehi-cles and actually may take longer to stop. And don’t bank on your 4x4’s traction. Your 4x4 can lose traction as quickly as a two-wheel drive ve-hicle.
If your vehicle is equipped with an-ti-lock brakes, do not pump them in at-tempting to stop. The right way is to steer into the skid while ap-plying the brake pedal evenly.
Look farther ahead in traffic than you nor-mally do. Actions by cars and trucks will alert you quicker to problems and give you a split second extra time to react safely.

Mercedes-Benz E-Class 2010 to 2012.
An all-new 2010-model year E-Class Coupe beat its sedan counterpart into Canadian Mer-cedes-Benz dealerships, in mid-2009.
Style, safety and comfort are fundamental characteristics of an E-Class, which is considered to be one of the safest cars in the world. This generation E-Class came with ten air bags and a new Pre-Safe sys-tem that readies all on-board safety systems, when it detects that a colli-sion may be about to happen.
A car to savour on a long road trip, this E-Class came with a new “Intel-ligent” body structure that’s 30 per cent more rigid than its predecessor, incredibly comfortable seating and a newly developed suspension with shock absorbers that automat-
ically adjust to a driving situation. An optional air suspension was also available with an electronic damp-ing system.
The E350 (coupe or sedan) is powered by a 3.5 litre V6 with 268 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. The E550 (coupe or sedan) has a 5.5 litre V8 that can generate 382 hp and 391 lb-ft of torque. The sedan also comes in a high-performance AMG 63 edi-tion with a 6.2-litre V8 that makes 518 horsepower and 465 lb.-ft. of torque.
All three engines are mated to a 7-speed automatic transmission and drive goes to the rear wheels of the Coupe and to all four wheels of the Sedan. The rear-drive 3.5L V6 gets best fuel economy at 11.9 L/100/km in the city and 7.6 L/100/km on the highway. The 6.2L V8 is the gas guzzler, with a city/highway rating of 16.5/10.2 L/100/km. All three en-gines also prefer premium fuel.
A standard Dynamic Handling package also allows the driv-er choose a sporty-set-up at the touch of a button. This changes the continuously variable damping, the speed-sensitive power steer-ing (with variable centering), ESP/ASR (traction control), accelerator response, and speed of automatic gear changes.
New active safety innovations included Attention Assist, which is a driver drowsiness monitor, Pre-Safe, which is preventative occupant pro-tection system, Adaptive High Beam Assist, which automatically dims headlight high beams, and an au-tomatic emergency braking system called Distronic Plus.
Attention Assist is a warning sys-tem that can sense a drop in driver attention level. It continuously mon-itors more than 70 different driver performance parameters, such as erratic steering behaviour, and will signal when it’s time for the driver to take a break.
Four new E-Class models were added for the 2011 model year: an E350 4MATIC station wagon, E350 BlueTEC diesel sedan, and two con-vertibles, the E350 cabriolet and E550 cabriolet. At highway cruising speeds you can barely hear the E350 BlueTEC diesel engine, throttle re-sponse is fast (for a diesel) and pull-ing power (398 lb ft of torque from 1600 to 2400 rpm) is phenomenal.
Engine upgrades followed in 2012. The E350 4MATIC got a di-rect-injection 3.5-litre V6. The E550 4MATIC got a 4.6-litre bi-turbo V8 and the E63 AMG got a 5.5-litre bi-turbo V8. All models also receive a revised transmission, electric pow-er steering and LED license plates.
Even though owner costs tend to be higher than average, the E-Class made Consumer Reports’ ‘Recom-mended list of cars to buy and the E350 BlueTEC was singled out for special praise.
Merc E-Class is a class of its own
‘‘Even though owner costs tend to be higher than average, the E-Class made Consumer Reports ‘Recommended List.’’Bob McHugh

Looking into my automotive crystal ball, I see a number of rea-sonably priced Japanese cars with the potential to go up in value, not down.
And while you wait for their price to rise these collector cars of the future should give you endless
driving pleasure – that is until you sell!
Now to be fair, I’ve not always been right so there’s a caution. In 1973, I recall talking to a man, who had just returned to the UK from Australia. He told me about a car called a Honda Civic, which would make a Mini look ridicu-lous in comparison. My immedi-ate reaction was that I had seen the Toyota Corollas that were just beginning to arrive in England and felt that the Mini did not have anything to worry about. Japanese cars were cheap and would not catch on. How wrong was I?
I can tell you that early Japanese cars are becoming much sought after so let’s look at some that are still affordable, if you can find a survivor or rust free example.
If you still have one of the first generation Honda Civics, the ma-jority were finished in a metallic gold, blue or green, I would sug-gest you look after it. In the fu-
ture, these cars will appeal to the demographic that grew up with them and they will be the future collectors.
1973-1979: Honda Civic: The Honda Civic was introduced during the OPEC oil crisis, first as a two-door and then a three-door hatchback.
The transversely mounted (similar to the Mini) 1169 cc en-gine driving the front-wheels was very peppy and spacious.

The Civic was similar to other “Made in Japan” items and considered a throw away automobile and that is exactly what happened to most of them. Rust helped speed up the process also.
If you can nd a pristine, rust free example, wrap it in cotton wool, it won’t com-mand over $1 million as some Toyota 200GTs have recently but it will increase in value as time goes by. Pay $4,000 - $9,000.
1990-1999 Mazda Mi-ata: Introduced in May of 1989, the Miata is consid-
ered the Japanese Lotus Elan. Unlike the thorough-bred and somewhat nicky Lotus engine, the Miata’s four-cylinder, twin-cam, four-valves-per cylinder en-gine is very reliable. In an eight-year production run, 430,000 rst generation Miatas were built.
This rock solid, rear-wheel-drive sports car does not rattle or shake like most convertibles.
The soft top can be raised and lowered effort-lessly with just one hand. The Japanese engineers tried out more than 100 different exhaust systems until they achieved the
sound they desired to make it sound like a British sports car.
Pay $5,500 - $9,000.1990-1999 Toyota
MR2: The second genera-tion MR2 was larger and weighed (160 to 180 kg) more than its square pre-decessor. The body styl-ing was now much more streamlined; if you use your imagination, it has a resemblance to both the Ferrari 348 and the Ferrari F355.
Because of this, the new MR2 was labeled by some as “The poor man’s Ferra-ri.”
If you purchase the tur-
bocharged version, you might feel like you are driv-ing a Ferrari!
Pay $5,250 - $7,0001971-1973 Datsun 240Z:
An early Datsun 240Z or event a 260Z from a dry cli-mate such as California or Arizona, one that you can still see and count the spot welds on the quarter panel rear wheel arches is a car to snap up.
These Ferrari 275 GTB lookalikes have a mag-ni cent overhead-cam, straight six-cylinder engine and independent rear sus-pension.
Consequently they are
fast and handle very well. Parts are also still readily available.
Pay $7,250 - $21,000. 1993-1995 Mazda RX-7:
The twin sequential turbo-charged RX-7 is a model that has generally been overlooked by many. The 1.3-litre Wankel engine screams and behaves like a motorcycle with its 8,000 rpm red-line. With 255hp it is a sports car without com-promise, unfortunately also not many buyers! Mazda had priced this model out of the market. If you can nd a mechanic familiar with rotary engines and want to have some fun,
this is the model to consid-er, de nitely one-step up from the Miata.
Pay $10,500 - $18,000 The quoted prices are
converted from US Dollars. Sourced from Collector Car Market Review and N.A.D.A. Valuation Guide books

People point and laugh at Jim Knowles when he drives his Smart Fortwo Electric Drive through downtown Campbell River.
But he and his wife Catherine have the last laugh when they open up their hydro bill.
“I think the last bill was just a few dollars more than the one we got before we bought the car in July so that’s inexpensive driv-ing,” said Knowles.
“I work out at the airport and so I travel about 10 kilometres
each way every day. I never let the battery go below 20 percent but I still find I can sometimes go four days before I plug it in over-night.”
In the summer, Knowles said he can easily get up to the 160 km range on a single charge but knows the Vancouver Island win-ter will take that down to around 120 as the wipers and heater take their energy toll.
“We moved from Ladner three-and-half years ago with our Smart Diesel. I think people here thought we would by some-
thing a little bigger – this is the truck capital of the Island after all.”
But they came back from a car-shopping jaunt from Rich-mond with the little electric car, which set them back around $26,990 less a generous BC gov-ernment rebate of $5,000.
“We stopped in Qualicum Beach to charge it for a couple of hours and made it back here easily.”
The car charges on what is called a level one (basic) charger but with rebates now offered on
fast chargers, they are contem-plating investing in one.
Knowles got in touch with Driveway to tell of his experienc-es with the smart car, following our launch piece on the BMWi3 electric car a few weeks ago. We would like to hear from others, who are driving pure electric ve-hicles in rural areas.
Electric vehicles are frequently dismissed as being good only for urban dwellers. The Knowles cou-ple are demonstrating they...

If style, comfort and safety top your auto “wish list”, and you’ve got the money, consider the re-markable Mercedes-Benz E-Class.
Expect to Pay Today2010 E350 Coupe/Sedan $32,000 to $38,0002011 E350 Coupe/Sedan $39,000 to $46,0002012 E350 Coupe/Sedan $49,000 to $57,000 Prices vary depending on a used vehicle’s con-
dition, mileage, usage and history. A complete mechanical check should always be performed by a reliable auto technician prior to purchase.
Recalls on the 2010 to 2012 Mercedes-Benz E-Class:
2010/2011 - The power steering assist system may fail due to the loss of power steering uid from a tting on a high-pressure power steering line. Dealers will inspect, tighten the tting and, if necessary, replace an O-ring seal.
It seems to me that few people know when it is permissible to turn left across a solid centre line.
If you can make the turn without hinder-ing people behind you that is ne but if you can’t – drive drive on because it’s the law. I live near a hospital and see people break this rule daily, allowing cars to stack up behind while they wait for a clearance in traf c to complete their turn.
Solid line lunacy Vernon resident Rodney Knopp is out rst Question of the Week Win-ner.
We asked readers to tell us about a favourite car from the past and Rodney had no hesitation in nominating his old Fiat. However, it wasn’t the car but the back-story that captured our hearts.
“In 1978 when I was in high school in Kamloops I owned a 1972 Fiat 2-door sedan,” Rodney explained.
“I was keen on a girl in school, and one day she asked me for a ride. While driving and chatting, the muf er fell off the car. She laughed and ducked down so as not to be seen by anyone.
“I dropped her off and she laughed some more as I drove away, as loud as the car could be without a muf er.”
Young Rodney gured that was that but . . . “Catherine and I are now in our 30th year of marriage and still love
how the car connected us!”(We could only nd a Fiat publicity photo of the four-door but there’s
little difference.)
Rodney is a two-time a winner!

...can serve people outside of major cities. Admittedly, they don’t travel far each day but then surely that’s the case for many rural residents.
Yes, trucks, larg-er cars and SUVs will always dominate in parts of the province where are harsh win-ters are commonplace and distances travelled are greater. But cars like the Smart and i3
maybe have a role to play as a family’s sec-ond vehicle in those locations. What do you think?

Extending your gene pool once meant taking a big hit in terms of personal style. Your ride got bigger, bulkier, longer and decidedly less hip. Kia essentially asked why, and answered the question with the 7-passenger Rondo - a design language so sleek and modern everyone’s going to want to come along for the ride. Don’t worry, your kids will still act unwilling, but inside they’re dying to be seen with you.
Panoramic Sunroof. Another bright idea!

Power Extendable Leg Cushion. Luxury for long legs!
Cargo Flashlight. Yeah, we
thought of that!

We sleep to keep our bodies func-tioning. Why should driving be any different? Why shouldn’t we actively engage in making ourselves better
drivers? Every time you get behind the
wheel of a vehicle, there’s a possi-bility you can change your life or the lives of others. We might not think too much about it, but operating a vehicle is a huge responsibility.
Poor driving habits, not shoulder checking, not using your signals, driving in the left lane when you’re not passing are minor details in the grand scheme of things, but have a large impact.
It’s never too late to refresh the basics and then pick up a few new good habits.
For example, if you look at any of the top athletes in their sport, they’re training most of the time. They’re trying to perfect their craft, even when they’re at the top of it.
I doubt Sebastian Vettel slums around in his down time, even after winning his fourth consecutive For-mula1 world championship. Sure,
he gets a break, but he’s constantly training to be faster and stronger.
In another interview, I chatted with Izod Indy racecar driver Simona de Silvestro. She tells me that there’s really no such thing as an “off-sea-
son.” She says she trains all year long. In fact, she trains harder when she’s not always behind the wheel of a car to prepare for the upcoming races.
If the pros do it, we should to.Some of the most fun I’ve had
behind the wheel of a car has been at a driving school. Whether it was the three-day racing school at the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca with the Skip Barber program, or a track day at the Mission Raceway with Morrisport Advanced Driving, or even a track program close to you, it’s a win-win.
If we’re all safer drivers then the chances of accidents are minimized and we can keep our vehicles dent-free longer. And avoid going through insurance claims. The few hundred dollars it takes to enrol is of in nite worth in the long run.
