STRANGE TALES
Mr Funny Dimples slumped in the bat-tered armchair, put his feet on a stooland sighed deeply.
It had been a particularly bad day. Severalfactors had led to his enforced retirementfrom the circus – age and rheumatism beingjust two. Audiences didn’t laugh any more.
His final year had been a nightmare. It was1932 and the impact of the talkies had seenmore and more people heading for the ever-growing numbers of cinemas.
People no longer wanted to huddle in a bigtop in Sefton Park when they could be pam-pered in a picture palace.
He was 60 but felt he could go on keepingthe paying public in stitches. However, heknew that clowns were only as good as theirlast pratfall.
Col Silas Highjinks, the circus boss, sum-moned Mr Funny Dimples into his gaudily-painted caravan one evening after a particu-larly painful performance.
The Colonel offered him a big cigar and

spoke of the need fornew ideas, freshblood and originality. In other words hewas fired.
After more than 30years Mr FunnyDimples becameplain Bert Bottomleyonce more.
Supported by asmall pension, hewas elected honorarysecretary of theLeague of the NoLonger Adorable. This Liverpool-basedcharity looked afterthe needs of actorsand entertainers whohad fallen on hardtimes.
That was fiveyears ago. Thingsstarted well when hehad discovered alatent talent fororganising peopleand events.
Cinema put moreand more entertain-ers out of work asmusic halls and otherlive venues closeddown.
Bert still thoughtof himself as MrFunny Dimples, referring to facialfeatures revealedwhen he covered hisface with whitemake-up.
He shifted his feetoff the stool and
gazed wistfullythrough the Frenchwindows lookingover the lawn behindhis lodgings. The sunwas setting in a clearred-tinged Liverpoolsky.
What a day! Firsthe had to sit throughthe planned come-back of Vera and herAmazing Poodles. Inthe afternoon he wascollared by HarryHowden who insist-ed on playing his
Happy Harmonica. This was followed bypiles of paperwork.
He was alwayssaddened when hesaw the miserablefaces of entertainersoff-stage and deviseda plan.
“Laughter is thebest medicine,” hetold the next meetingof League commit-tee. To back it up, heannounced the returnof Mr FunnyDimples.
He secured abooking at a run-down suburban the-atre only because heoffered to performfor nothing.
Mr FunnyDimples struttedabout the stage, amass of ruffles andbright colours. Hisantics raised a breezeof laughter from thewell-oiled audience.
He had planned hisexit meticulously –disappearing in a
puff of smokethrough a trap door.
That was the lasttime anyone saw MrFunny Dimples. Asearch of the theatrerevealed no trace ofthe clown and heremains on the miss-ing persons file tothis day.

The club’s now-famous FoodOptimising plan wasa surprise too:“People think slim-ming means going
hungry, eating noth-ing but salad, obses-sively counting everycalorie you eat andweighing or measur-ing everything onyour plate, but it’snot like that at all atSlimming World. Ilove food and it’snever once felt like Iwas on ‘a diet’. I stillenjoy all my

There’s no time like thepresent for people tojoin the gym and makegetting fit their numberone priority, congratu-lations if this is you.
My number one tip for start-ing out is to be realistic, toomany people set themselvescrazy goals in such a shortspace of time. It’s not surprisingwhen you see celebrity maga-zines with headlines of some-one losing 7 stone in a week.Use the SMART approach:
Specific - make sure your
goals are specific to you andyour capabilities. Don’t followsomebody else’s programme orregime.
Measurable - Take measure-ments so you can keep track ofyour progress. Ditch the scalesas these only tell you howheavy you are, they do not tellyou if this weight is from fat ormuscle. Take measurements ofyour waist, hips, thighs, armsetc. I would recommend fort-nightly results.
Achievable - You canachieve things that you don’tthink you’re capable of. Yourbody is a powerful and amazing
machine and you will surpriseyourself with what you canachieve.
Realistic - Don’t set yourselfthe goal of losing 5 stone in aweek. Do not expect miraclesbut do expect gradual change. It’s long journey but you willget there.
Time - Set yourself atimescale so you are workingtowards something and have adeadline to achieve it. If youjust have an open goal then youwon’t push yourself to achieveit, set deadlines and be yourown boss.

Horseshoes havebeen considered asymbol of goodluck since the 4thcentury. In thepast most peoplein Britain had ahorseshoe hang-ing in theirhomes, especiallyabove a door, asthis was thoughtto keep the Devilaway.
In Britain horse-

Despite a 4-3 homedefeat against title rivalsMallaby, SouthLiverpool FC remain oncourse for promotion tothe first division of theWest Cheshire League, after three straight winsagainst teams in relega-tion danger.
The defeat to Mallaby was, ironically, one of South’s bestperformances for some time, dominating the second halfafter going in at half time 3-2
down after goals from TomKinsella and Alex Woodcock. An equaliser from Woodcocklooked to have got the teamsomething from the gameafter hitting the woodworkthree times but the fastMallaby forwards werealways a danger and grabbeda fourth near the end.
Since then, South have notbeen entirely convincing buthave eventually eased pastMossley Hill Reserves, AFCBebington Athletic and
Marshalls. A 4-1 win againstMossley Hill saw goals fromTom Kinsella, CameronDalton and two from centreback Andrew Tull. A 2-1 winat AFC Bebington saw AlexWoodcock score twice, hissecond coming with only 10minutes to go. A 5-3 win athome to Marshalls saw theteam come from 3-1 downwith only 20 minutes to go.A triple substitution providedthe necessary spark as Southcompletely dominated thefinal phase with a goal from
Gary Pollard and a hat-trickfrom Alex Woodcock, theclub’s leading scorer with 24goals.
The reserves have beenpreparing for a league cupsemi- final at the time ofgoing to press and have anoutside chance of promotion.Despite a 3-2 loss at NestonNomads with two goals formPat Kelly, two wins over rel-egation candidates, and otherresults elsewhere, have leftthe team with a chance of
getting into the top two. A 3-0 win at Upton AA Reserveswith goals from Dean Sayer,Kieran Parker and AdamBrittles and a 7-1 home winagainst bottom clubEllesmere Port Reserves withgoals from Sharif Yusuf, twofrom Francis Evans, PatKelly, James Gaskill, AdamBrittles and Gerard Fordeproduced six welcomepoints.
The youth team have had avery disrupted season but
have easily qualified for theleague cup competition quar-ter finals, including a youthteam record 12-0 win overhapless Brookvale United. The resignation ofRamsbottom United hasgiven the team an advantagein the league competitionwith only one win requiredfrom the last three leaguegames, albeit against ourmain rivals, Bootle andGateacre.

After a brightstart to 2013 withtwo consecutivevictories, the opti-mism generatedfrom those gamessoon dissipated asa run of fourstraight defeatshas seen the clubeliminated fromtwo cups and sinkto the bottom ofthe league.
That said, the twogames in the I-Zingari Cup and theGeorge Mahon Cup(both against APH;lost 1-2 & 0-1) wereevenly fought andcould have quite eas-ily gone the otherway. The leaguegame against EastVilla was the arche-typal game of twohalves as Stoneycroftfailed to get startedin the opening halfand conceded twopoor goals, but in thesecond half showedspirit and determina-tion that deservedgreater reward thanthe one goal they
managed to pullback.
Last week’s gameagainst Red Rumwas a sorry tale ofwoe. Played on acold, wet and miser-able March day,Stoneycroft’s per-formance was onethat matched theweather. Havingtaken the lead on 15minutes after a rea-sonably bright start,Red Rum started toboss the midfieldand, coupled with aninability byStoneycroft to retainpossession, it onlybecome a matter oftime before Red Rumtook control and theyeventually run out 4-1 winners to extendCroft’s losing run. Tocomplete a miserableafternoon DylanRobinson, makinghis first full start forthe club, sustained abroken leg and willbe out for the rest ofthe season.
We wish Dylan aspeedy recovery andhope he is soon backplaying.
