THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS (2008)

Jess Langston Turner is one of the bright young voices in contemporary composition. His highly acclaimed Rumpelstilzchen propelled him headlong into the wind world’s musical scene. hrough the Looking Glass (2008) was composed as a farewell and thank you to his undergraduate alma mater, Bob Jones University in Greenville, South Carolina. Turner writes, “the piece is composed as a concert opener, bringing the audience into the musical world by the concert they are about to hear. In this way, this piece acts in a similar manner to the looking glass through which Alice was able to gain access to her wonderland.” he entire piece “utilizes only ive pitches which are constantly reconigured into running passages, ostinato and thrilling fanfares.”

SKETCHES ON A TUDOR PSALM (1971)

Sketches on a Tudor Psalm was composed in 1971 and premiered by the Sam Houston State University Symphonic Band, Ralph L. Mills, conductor. Tull was prompted to compose the piece as a result of the success of his Ostwald Award winning Tocatta (1969).

Sketches utilizes homas Tallis’ iteenth century setting of the Second Psalm as the primary material for the composition. Tull was hesitant to use the Tallis material because of his familiarity with Ralph Vaughan Williams’ 1910 composition Fantasia for Double String Orchestra that also made use of this Tallis melody. In the composition, Tull exploits the metric freedom inherent in the original psalm tune. he piece develops as a series of continuous variations framed by a simple brass chorale statement of the main psalm tune.

CHILDREN’S OVERTURE (1964)

For more than 50 years, the American Wind Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Robert Austin Boudreau, has performed for audiences around the world. his unique ensemble enlists talented college musicians each summer for a tour through America’s waterways on a barge that doubles as a loating concert shell. hroughout its existence, the group has commissioned more than 350 works from a who’s who of contemporary composers. Eugene Bozza’s Children’s Overture was commissioned by the AWSO in 1964.

Bozza’s idea for the piece was inspired by the opening movement of Respighi’s Pines of Rome. Respighi notes “Children are at play in the pine groves of the Villa Borghese, dancing the Italian equivalent of ‘Ring Around the-rosy’; mimicking marching soldiers and battles; twittering and shrieking like swallows at evening; and then disappearing.” Bozza utilizes several French children’s songs as the framework for this playful overture.

REST (2010)

Created in 2010, Rest is a concert band adaptation of a choral work by the same composer, here Will Be Rest, which was commissioned in 1999 by the Paciic Chorale, John Alexander, conductor. he composer writes:

In making this version, I preserved almost everything from the original: harmony, dynamics, even the original registration. I also endeavored to preserve carefully the fragile beauty and quiet dignity suggested by Sara Teasdale’s words.

However, with the removal of the text, I felt free to enhance certain aspects of the music, most strikingly with the addition of a sustained climax on the main theme. his extended climax allows the band version to transcend the expressive boundaries of a straight note-for-note setting of the original. hus, both versions are intimately tied and yet independent of one another, each possessing its own strengths and unique qualities.

he concert band work was commissioned by Russel Mikkelson and family in memory of his father, Elling Mikkelson.

FLOURISHES ON A RENAISSANCE THEME (2010)

Flourishes and Meditations on a Renaissance heme was commissioned by the President’s Own United States Marine Band and is dedicated to them, their Director, Colonel Michael J. Colburn and their Assistant Director, Major Jason K. Fettig. Gandoli notes:

Flourishes and Meditations on a Renaissance heme is a set of seven variations on an anonymous Renaissance melody that is simply titled Spagnoletta. It is derived from a popular melody titled Españoleta or ‘Little Spanish Tune.’ I irst knew this melody as quoted by Joachin Rodrigo in his Fantasia para un gentilhombre for guitar and orchestra. I also found this tune in the 1970’s in a collection of Renaissance songs for classical guitar, and I have played it in that form countless times over the years. I was motivated to probe this elegant tune with which I have been acquainted for four decades, with the expectation that it would prompt a wealth of ideas unique to such a longstanding relationship. he beauty and elegance of the original tune resides in its simplicity, so I chose to present it at the outset of the piece in a clear and streamlined orchestration. he basic nature or character of each variation is revealed in the labels that are placed in the score.

SHAKESPEARE PICTURES (2008)

Nigel Hess is a composer of diverse experience. He has composed music for British and American television, orchestral commissions and premiers for the London Symphony Orchestra, original ballets, music for his vocal group, Chameleon, and has served as the House Composer for the Royal Shakespeare Company.

In his Shakespeare Pictures for symphonic wind band, Hess has taken music from three works to form a 12-minute suite. It begins with the boisterous overture to Much Ado About Nothing, followed by a contrasting slow movement depicting the beautiful statue from A Winter’s Tale before displaying huge pomp of Caesar’s Rome with he Entry to the Senate.
