AGC Presents Independence Excavating With Safety AwardFor a second time, Associated General
Contractors (AGC) awarded IndependenceExcavating its National AGC SafetyExcellence Award — First Place in theFederal and Heavy Division for 700,000 to 1million hours worked. IndependenceExcavating received this award based uponits exceptional safety performance, well-implemented safety program and an incidentrate at least 25 percent below that of its AGCmember peers.Independence Excavating’s Safety
Director Tom Steblinski cited the firm’s per-sonalized safety approach as the basis forthis award, as well as the absence ofreportable injuries on major projects includ-ing the Cleveland Convention Center demo-lition and site package and the Ford BrookPark engine plant demolition. “In my experience outside the firm,
[Independence Excavating’s] safety pro-gram is unlike most construction companieswhere safety personnel are office-based, pro-cessing workers’ compensation and paper-work. Our safety specialists and coordina-tors spend 80 percent of their time in thefield developing relationships with the guysdoing the work. We’re not the safety police, trying to catch them doing somethingwrong. We develop trusting relationships
with the workers and get their buy-in onsafety. Our safety personnel come from fieldpositions; we’ve been in their shoes. Theguys understand that we’re here to help themgo home safely to their families by abidingby safety regulations, all while helping themdo their jobs,” said Steblinski. The firm also finds its safety commitment
creates cost savings for its clients “Accidents — especially severe accidents
— will impact the day of the event and, tosome extent, the schedule going forward. Wemaintain utmost safety measures because weunderstand that accidents affect morale, thespeed of work, and our team’s comfort. Ourcommitment to safety and preventing
accidents delivers cost savings on each proj-ect,” said Steblinski. In fact, Independence Excavating remains
one of the few Ohio construction firms of itssize that is approved by the state of Ohio toself-insure workers’ compensation. The firmwas awarded self-insured status in 2005because of its strong financial standing andexcellent safety record. “We pass the cost savings gained from not
having to pay premiums on to our clients, giving them an even better price on eachjob.”With offices in Cleveland, Pittsburgh and
Chantilly, Va., Independence Excavating isan industry leader in challenging site devel-opment, heavy industrial applications, dem-olition, environmental solutions, concreteconstruction, aggregate crushing and one ofthe Midwest’s premier and diversified con-struction companies. Founded in 1956 bythe DiGeronimo family, IndependenceExcavating has earned a solid reputation forhonesty, integrity and outstanding perform-ance.For more information, visit

BONNER, Mont. (AP) Montanahighway officials are working on plansfor a new interstate highway bridgeover the Blackfoot River — eventhough there’s no money for a newbridge yet. Montana Department of
Transportation officials aim to replacethe Interstate 90 bridge and remove thepiers in the river, The Missoulianreported. “We don’t have any funding identi-
fied for it, but we really want to get tothe environmental phase because wehave to do that regardless,’’ said EdToavs, MDT’s Missoula districtadministrator. “Once we do that andget a preliminary design in the envi-ronmental document, that allows us inthe future when funding does becomeavailable, to really start working on thespecific bridge design and then con-struct it.’’ The MDT held its first open house
on the project Oct. 30, even though thestate is at least five years from the con-struction phase.
Built in the 1960s, the current I-90bridge stands on piers that block themiddle of the channel, causing a safetyconcerns for recreational floaters. Interstate 90 bridges eastbound and
westbound are two of five that span theBlackfoot within a half-mile of itsmouth. The other three — a pedestrianbridge, the Montana state Route 200span and a Montana Rail Link trestle— are supported by piers and abut-ments on either side of the river. Onlythe I-90 piers block the middle of achannel that was narrowed significant-ly when Milltown Dam was removedin 2008. Until this summer, the fish and
wildlife division of Montana Fish,Wildlife and Parks had kept the stretchclosed to river traffic altogether for fearthe hydraulics around the piers couldcause entrapment issues. The ban waslifted July 1 but will be reinstated forfuture Mays and Junes. “The department as a whole is defi-
nitely supportive of addressing the pierissue,’’ said Chet Crowser, Region 2
parks manager of the FWP. “For a longtime now, there’s been a fair amount ofdiscussion amongst the local commu-nity here about the piers and safetyissues and what we can do to addressthose.’’ The obstructing piers also show
signs of scouring around the base,Toavs said. Bridge inspections have not found
anything deficient on either interstatebridge. “They’re in good shape that way,’’
Toavs said. The MDT envisions two new
bridges in the same places and on thesame alignments. The river is now nar-row enough to be easily spanned by atwo-lane freeway bridge without a pierin the middle. “I don’t anticipate an exotic
design,’’ Toavs said. “It’s somethingthat’s very common and doable.’’

HOLT CAT, the Caterpillar Equipment and Engine deal-er of south, central, north and north east Texas, knows aboutthe skilled trades gap, and has formed an innovative partner-ship with John A. Dubiski High School in Grand Prairie todo something about it. The program has been so successfulthat the Dallas Regional Chamber awarded HOLT with theBlueprint Education Catalyst Award on Nov. 6. HOLT CAT depends upon highly skilled technicians who
are in short supply across the nation. In addition to the usualapproaches of attracting talent via great work environments, the company developed an internship program at Dubiskithat helps young people develop into experienced heavyequipment technicians. It’s one way the company is helpingmanage the skilled trades gap that affects all industries.“We have a vested interest in the workforce of today as
well as tomorrow, and the internship program with Dubiskiprovides mutual benefits to the company and to the studentswho can get paid for learning advanced technical skills,”said Allyn Archer, president and chief operating officer ofHOLT CAT. “We are honored at the recognition this pro-gram has received, and most importantly, it’s validation ofthe value that skilled trades programs can offer to students inhigh school.”HOLT CAT recently pledged $1 million to vocational
education and training in Texas over the next three years.Dubiski and HOLT created a unique internship program
in 2012 to offer junior and senior students paid internshipsand world-class training by pairing them with seasoned tech-
nicians in the repair and maintenance of heavy equipmentand engines, including hydraulics, electronics and dieselengines. The interns graduate from Dubiski with the basicskills in the heavy equipment industry required to join theworkforce as entry-level technicians. Since 2012, HOLT hasinvested more than $225,000 into the internship programand skills building with Dubiski students, and more than 80percent of the internship participants have been offered full-time positions with HOLT. “The partnership we have formed with HOLT has
allowed our students to graduate with the necessary skills togain a high school degree and have the opportunity to liveout the American dream,” said Rick Elmore, Dubiski Schoolof Transportation program facilitator. “Former interns whoare now HOLT technician number one’s have been able tostep up in their family and take a financial leadership rolebecause of this partnership. Outside of this program andschool, I don’t know many 18-year-old men and womenwho are able to do that.”HOLT is committed to vocational and technical education
in north Texas. The company annually awards financial sup-port to other area high schools and colleges through theCaterpillar Dealer Excellence Fund. Participating schoolsbesides Dubiski include Skyline High School in Dallas,Cedar Valley College in Lancaster and Birdville HighSchool in North Richland Hills.

Cat 303E CR Offers Optimum Performance in Tight SpacesThe new Cat 303E CR mini-hydraulic
excavator, only 61 in. (155 cm) wide acrossthe blade and having a compact-radiusdesign that limits tail swing to less than 5in. (12 cm), is an easily transportedmachine that works efficiently and safely insmall spaces and on congested job sites. With a maximum operating weight of7,782 lbs. (3,530 kg), the 303E CR expandsthe Cat mini-excavator line and gives buy-ers more choice in the 2.75 to 3.85 ton (2.5to 3.5 t) size class. The new model’s 23.5-hp (17.5 kW) Cat
C1.3 engine combines with a powerfulload-sensing hydraulic system — deliver-ing flows to 23.1 gpm (87.6 Lpm) — toprovide productive, reliable performance indemanding applications, according to themanufacturer.Available both in cab and canopy config-
urations, the 303E CR is designed for theoperator’s convenience and safety. Alloperator stations, cab or canopy, are ROPS,TOPS and Top Guard Level 1 certified, andthe Cat interlock system, which preventshydraulic movement when the safety bar israised, adds further to operational safety, asdo the standard travel alarm, automaticswing brake, and 3 in.-wide retractableseatbelt.A large, adjustable suspension seat keeps
operators comfortable, and a monitor thatdisplays gauges and general diagnosticskeeps them informed. An automatic two-speed travel system enhances overallmachine efficiency and ease of operation, and an automatic engine-idle system con-serves fuel and reduces sound levels.
The 303E CR’s hydraulic system useslow-effort, pilot-operated joysticks thatprovide more precise, more consistent con-trol than mechanical-linkage controls. Foroperator convenience, auxiliary-hydrauliccontrols are integrated into the joysticks, making the 303E CR work-tool ready withboth a one-way-flow circuit for tools suchas hydraulic hammers and a two-way-flowcircuit when using work tools with cylin-ders or bi-directional motors. An in-cab pat-tern changer allows easily switching con-
trols to suit operator preference. To increase operator productivity and
efficiency, the 303E CR’s bucket can rotate200 degrees, providing increased materialretention at the top of the lift cycle whenloading trucks and allowing for deeper flat-back trenches without repositioning themachine. In addition, a lifting eye on thefront linkage provides a secure attachmentpoint for rigging. For added convenience, a float function
for the dozer blade allows the blade to fol-
low ground contour and create smooth fin-ish grades, perhaps eliminating an addition-al grading tractor on the project. Also adding to the 303E CR’s versatility
is its ability to use the bucket in a front-shovel configuration, an advantage for suchtasks as installing utility pipe, cleaningmaterial from inside truck bodies, or fillinga hopper next to a wall. When digging inconfined spaces, the 303E CR’s offsetboom provides added flexibility. To increase the 303E CR’s overall versa-
tility, a mechanical quick coupler is avail-able for accommodating work tools such asaugers and hydraulic hammers, and athumb-ready stick is standard. An accumu-lator in the auxiliary hydraulic systemsmoothes hydraulic action, prevents dam-aging pressure spikes, and releases pressurethrough the pilot system.Auxiliary lines are mounted low on the
stick, close to work tools, eliminating theneed to use long, flexible hoses, vulnerableto damage, to reach work tools. Quick-dis-connect couplers provide easy, spill-proofconnections with work tools, and for addedutility, the 303E CR accepts all Cat 303.5and 304 E Series mini-excavator worktools.Steel tracks are available for the 303E
CR, as an alternative to the standard rubbertracks, for use in applications that requirehigher resistance to sharp debris. For more information, visit

Key Features of the New Generation ofCompact Excavators
JCB’s 67C-1, 86C-1 and 85Z-1feature an all-new H-design under-carriage, robust steel body panels, spacious cabs and Tier IV finalengines that deliver increased fuelefficiency and lower operatingcosts. Powered by JCB by Kohlerdiesel engines, they provide 10
percent less fuel consumption andmeet EPA Tier IV Final emissionsstandards without the need for adiesel particulate filter. The compact excavators include
JCB’s 2Go hydraulic safety sys-tem, requiring the operator to acti-vate the hydraulic system througha button on the right-hand con-soles, therefore reducing thechance of operators working thehydraulic levers outside of the cab.Operators also must be seated witha seat belt to activate thehydraulics. A six percent roomier cab not
only offers more space and opera-tor comfort, but also provides 11percent more visibility, furtherincreasing safety. An updated heat-ing and ventilation system andoptional air conditioning improves
airflow throughout the cab, improving comfort year round. The cab also tilts to 30 degrees foreasier servicing. Each of the three machines fea-
tures a sturdy kingpost design withwidely spaced bearings to preventwear. Additionally, the excavatorsuse a new graphite-based pin andbush design, delivering 500-hourgreasing intervals for reduced dailymaintenance and lower operatingcosts. The digging equipment hasindividual hydraulic piping forsimplified maintenance and hosereplacement. For more information, visit

Bobcat T450 Features Tier IV Non-DPF Emissions SolutionDue to popular demand
for a compact track loaderin the 400 frame size,Bobcat Company hasintroduced the new T450.The Bobcat T450 reintro-duces a compact trackloader platform size thathas not been availablefrom Bobcat Company inrecent years. In addition toM-Series enhancementsand engine innovations, theT450 features more horse-power, higher auxiliarypressures, lower groundpressure and increasedtravel speed whenequipped with the optionaltwo-speed drive system. With a width of just 56
in. (142 cm) when pairedwith a bucket, the T450 iswell-suited for accessingand working in tight jobsites, often replacing taskspreviously done with man-ual labor and tools. Themachine’s rubber trackundercarriage minimizesground disturbance — just 4.7 pounds persquare inch — to established surfaces forfewer repairs when a project is complete. The T450 loader features a radius lift
path, providing operators with good reachand visibility. An optional enclosed cab withheat and air conditioning is available forimproved operator comfort. Air condition-ing is a new option for this size of Bobcatcompact track loaders. Also available for thefirst time in a Bobcat compact track loaderthis size, a two-speed drive system providesfaster travel when desired — with a maxi-mum speed of 7.3 mph in low range and 11mph in high range. The T450 joins the M-Series compact
track loader line, which includes the T550,T590, T630, T650, T750, T770 and T870compact track loaders. All M-Series loadersshare features such as improved power andperformance, good all-around visibility andoutstanding operator comfort.
Multiple Engine AdvancementsThe 2.4-L Bobcat engine in the T450 fea-
tures a non-diesel particulate filter (non-DPF) engine solution. The Tier IV non-DPFsolution was achieved by designing an ultra-low particulate combustion (ULPC) engine.A specially designed engine combustionchamber significantly reduces the amountsof particulate matter. Therefore, Tier IVemissions compliance can be achievedwithout using a DPF. In addition to elimi-nating the need for a DPF, the new engine
used in the T450 compact track loader hasmore horsepower and increased torque. This increase is produced over a wide rangeof engine rpm, allowing operators of all skilllevels to better utilize the machines’ maxi-mum performance. For more than a decade, Bobcat loaders
have been equipped with standard machineshutdown protection that monitors engineand hydraulic functions. Bobcat Companycontinues to improve these investment-sav-ing features for its customers. Prior to thenew Bobcat engine, engine coolant andhydraulic oil temperatures were monitored. If these functions fell outside of their normaloperating ranges, the system alerted theoperator and shut down the machine to pre-vent catastrophic damage. With the new Bobcat engines, machine
shutdown is still included when needed. However, instead of shutdown being theonly solution, the system monitors coolantand oil temperatures and manages theengine to prevent them from reaching apoint where the machine must be shutdown. This helps to prevent engine damage, minimizes engine wear and keeps operatorsworking.Another new feature of the Bobcat com-
pact track loader line is cold weather pro-tection. Anytime the engine temperature istoo low, the loader will temporarily limit themaximum engine speed (rpm) to preventpremature component wear or failure.Engine idle speed also is raised slightly to
help the engine reach its operating tempera-ture faster. As soon as the engine warms upto a predetermined temperature, the protec-tion mechanism will deactivate.
Improved PerformanceThe Bobcat T450 has increased hydraulic
performance, enabling it to efficientlyaccomplish more work. The hydraulic sys-tems on M-Series loaders have beendesigned for higher pressure — 3,300 psi —which provides increased attachment per-formance.Hydraulic flow and engine horsepower
are matched to the loader’s rated operatingcapacity, size and weight — producing aloader that can outperform higher-horse-power compact loaders. The T450 is a 61-hp machine — which represents a 25 per-cent increase in horsepower over the loaderit replaces. The T450 also stands out fromother loader brands with its faster dump androllback cycle times and higher lift and tiltcylinder forces, according to the manufac-turer.
Cab InnovationsThe T450 features a cab-forward design
that moves the operator closer to the attach-ment and provides enhanced visibility in alldirections. The new loader has the largestcab door opening on the market for easyentry and exit, offering added visibility tothe cutting edge of the bucket and the cor-ners of an attachment.
Windows on the sidesand rear of the cab are larg-er to provide more visibili-ty to the tracks and back ofthe machine. The larger topwindow makes it easier andmore comfortable for theoperator to see an attach-ment with the lift armsraised, an advantage whenloading trucks or perform-ing other tasks. An optional deluxe
instrumentation panelmonitors key loader func-tions — including fuel con-sumption — and the key-less start helps preventequipment theft. The 5-in.,full-color LCD screenoffers better readability andoperator interaction. Easy-to-read virtual sweepgauges allow operators toquickly read and under-stand the machine’s per-formance.T450 owners may
choose between standardfoot pedal and hand lever
controls, the advanced control system(ACS) or the optional selectable joystickcontrols (SJC).
Increased UptimeUptime protections on the new loader are
similar to other M-Series models: efficientmachine cooling; solid steel tailgate; andimproved tie downs. A specially designedrear bumper extends past the tailgate to pro-tect the T450 from obstacles — and relatedscrapes and bumps — on the work site. TheT450 is designed to work long hours ondemanding job sites with minimal timeneeded for routine maintenance. Simplechecks and superior design make it easier toaccess systems and perform maintenancecorrectly at the proper intervals. The T450 also features the hydraulically
powered Bobcat SmartFAN. The coolingsystem draws cool, clean air from above anddirects it out through two side vents. Theradiator and hydraulic oil cooler are locatedabove the engine, well-protected betweenthe frame uprights yet easily maintained. An open undercarriage design, constant
tension drive belt, protected quick coupler, and improved tie downs also are new fea-tures to help increase uptime protectionwhen operating the T450.For more information, visit

ALLU’s DL Screening Buckets Extend Range to CompactsALLU Group Inc.’s DL screening buckets are designed
specifically for use with compact base machines such asmini-excavators, small wheel loaders, skid steers and back-hoes. One bucket allows you to change screen sizes ranging
from 5/8, 1 ¼
and 2 in. (1.6, 3.2 and 5 cm) just by changing out the screenand hammers. The DL screening bucket is the perfect toolfor landscapers and is engineered to screen, mix, aerate andload top soil, peat and compost.
The core of the new DL screening bucket is the unique topscreen where the screening hammers spin between the
screen comb. This design makes the buckets clog-free,ensuring good production and throughput even with
wet materials. Additionally, the new DL screeningbucket doesn’t require a case drain line for oper-
ation making the bucket as simple as attachand start screening.
To ensure maximum performance and durability, thebucket’s frame was designed and modeled using finite ele-ment analysis (FEA) engineering. The material weight iscarried by the top screen comb so the drums and bearingshave less impact under the load. The screening blades andtop screen comb are changeable when worn or when chang-ing size adjustments, which helps keep operating costs low.
The buckets are available in three models — the DL 2-09,DL 2-12 and DL 2-17. The DL 2-09 is the smallest of theseries and is recommended for use with mini-excavatorsweighing 8,800 to 26,000 lbs. (3,991 to 11,793 kg) and smallwheel loaders weighing 4,400 to 17,600 lbs. (1,996 to 7,983kg). The bucket is 43 in. wide, 35 in. high and 37 in. (109 by89 by 94 cm) deep and weighs 947 lbs. (429.5 kg).
The DL 2-12 bucket is recommended for compact exca-vators weighing 15,400 to 26,000 lbs. (6,985 to 11,793 kg)and for small wheel loaders weighing 6,600 to 17,600 lbs.(2,993 to 7,983 kg). The bucket is 56 in. wide, 35 in. highand 37 in. (142 by 89 by 94 cm) deep and weighs 1,190 lbs.(540 kg).

Wacker Neuson’s 803 Can Operate With Zero EmissionsWacker Neuson has introduced a 1-ton (.9
t) excavator that can run off diesel or electricpower. The 803 dual power mini-excavatorruns off a standard diesel engine or can eas-ily be connected to an electro-hydraulicpump — allowing the machine to operateemission-free. This solution is perfect forinterior excavating and demolition, and isunique in that the operator can choosebetween diesel and electric power on thesame machine depending on the application, according to the manufacturer.
The 803 dual power mini-excavator issmall in size, but big in performance andversatility.
The new 803 dual power features a dedi-cated connection in the undercarriage wherethe electro-hydraulic pump, HPU8, attachesto the excavator. For convenience, long 39 ft.(12 m) hoses connect the HPU8 and the 803undercarriage, allowing the mini-excavatorto still rotate 360-degrees. Accessibility onthe job is easy since it is narrow enough to fitthrough standard interior doors.
The HPU8 electro-hydraulic pump wasspecifically developed by Wacker Neuson, ensuring that no matter which powersource is used, the 803 delivers the samepowerful, consistent performance. In theconventional operation, the 803 is powered
by a 13-hp diesel engine, which providesthe small excavator enough power forbreaking applications. When connected tothe HPU8 electo-hydraulic pump, the 803runs emissions-free with the same best inclass performance.
Wacker Neuson’s new 803 dual powermini-excavator features a telescopic under-carriage that can extend from 27.5 to 34-in.(70 to 86 cm) for greater stability and liftingpower. The dimensions of the HPU8 wereoptimized for the 803, and it can be lifted

Case Introduces Tier IV Final TR310 Alpha Series CTLCase Construction Equipment’s Tier IV
Final TR310 Alpha Series compact trackloader (CTL) features wider tracks (15.75 in.[40 cm]), a greater overall width (74.3 in.[188.7 cm]) and lower ground pressure (5.0psi) than other medium-frame CTLs in theCase lineup. These features provide greaterpower, stability and flotation forowners/operators who need that perform-ance without upgrading to a large-framemachine, according to the manufacturer. The new TR310 weighs in at 8,800 lbs.
(3,991 kg) with a rated operating capacity of3,100 lbs. (1,406 kg) and a bucket breakoutforce of 8,680 lbs. The machine’s 74 hp, 232ft.-lbs. of torque and increased hydraulicflow (standard: 24.2 gpm [91.6 Lpm]; high-flow: 32.4 gpm [122.6 Lpm]) make it idealfor landscaping, residential construction andagricultural applications. The radial-lift armdesign is ideal for digging and pushing appli-cations, and the machine’s hinge-pin height(10 ft., 3 in. [3.1 m]) is excellent for loadingand unloading trucks. It also features a 19.5-gal. (73.9 L) fuel tank, which extends run-times and ensures that the machine can workthe entire day without refueling.
Maintenance-Free Tier IV Final Solution
The TR310 features a cooled exhaust gasrecirculation (CEGR) engine with a particu-late matter catalyst, which is made up of adiesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) and a high-efficiency flow-through filter. The DOCconverts emissions into neutral gasses. Theremaining particulate matter then passesthrough to the filter where it is slowed andburned. This solution is efficient and mainte-nance free as it does not require filterreplacement.
EZ-EH Controls Provide FlexibilityThe TR310 offers an EZ-EH (electro-
hydraulic) setup menu that features nineoptimal preset speed and control settings. This allows the operator to match controls totheir preference for greater confidence andproductivity. A single rocker switch allowsoperators to switch between the Case “H”operating pattern and ISO pattern controls,

RESPECTFULLY DISREGARDS CONVENTIONAL EXCAVATOR WISDOM.Plenty of people make compact excavators. But none can say they engineered the first mini-excavator, zero tail swing excavator, swing-boom excavator and rubber-tracked excavator. At Yanmar, we simply can’t stop innovating. That’s why our nine excavators – seven with true zero tail swing – are each purpose-built to overcome the most challenging conditions, work with unparalleled power and conserve fuel. So, if you just want to play around on your jobsite, go get any old excavator. BUT IF YOU’D RATHER RULE YOUR JOBSITE, GET A YANMAR.

The Ultralok Tooth System offers a hammerless lock that is integrated into the point - coupled with ESCO excavator buckets, it maximizes penetration, reduces fuel costs, and increases productivity.
Leading Edge Attachments Inc. now offers the multi-ripper talon bucket as an addi-tion to the multi-ripper SHARC product line. Designed mainly for utility pipelinecontractors, the multi-ripper talon bucket works on the same principle as the multi-ripper bucket, except the bucket is very narrow, and the leading edges have beenredesigned so that the center rib can be eliminated, thus improving capacity fill anddumping for a narrow bucket. The performance of this style of maximum breakout“one tooth at a time” bucket avoids the use of rock trenchers, hammers and blast-ing.

Shuttle Buggy Instrumental in Process“We were responsible for base
course and paving of the new runwayand the overall construction of the largeapron and taxiway,” said Jeff Boone, project manager of United Companies.“We needed to complete our portionsof the combined projects within theeight-month timeline for the wholeproject, so our timing was tight.”United Companies had two major
responsibilities in the project: the dirtand stonework to create the subbaseand the finish paving on the runway, apron and the aircraft turnaround. Inaddition to the main runway, UnitedCompanies paved a 650 by 320 ft.(198 by 97.5 m) apron and a 1,200long by 50 ft. (365 by 15 m) widetaxiway. After Fiore & Sons completed the
demo of the old runway, UnitedCompanies came on site and moved100,000 cu. yd. (76,455 cu m) of dirtfor the large apron and widened run-way. Between the two areas, thecompany placed 70,000 tons(63,502 t) or 35,000 cu. yd. (26,759cu m) of p154 and p209 crushedaggregate base course in 6-in. (15 m)lifts with the company’s threeCaterpillar 140H motorgradersequipped with Topcon machine con-trol.For the paving, the United
Companies placed 23,000 tons ofFAA-spec HMA in two lifts of 2 in. (5cm) deep. To meet stringent FAArequirements, the finished paving, afterleveling by a 16 ft. (4.9 m) straightedge, must be within 3/16 of an inch. There was no room for variance.“We’ve paved a lot of airports and
our crew understands the quality stan-dard we must reach,” said RickBottenfield, paving manager of UnitedCompanies. “The finished paving is thefinal and most noticed step in achievingthe FAA tolerances.”United Companies has four paving
crews. The company owns four asphaltpaving machines — a Caterpillar AP-1055E, two Cat AP655Ds and a Volvopaver. Additionally, the company has aRoadtec SB-2500 Shuttle Buggy mate-rial transfer vehicle and various vibra-tory compactors. Bottenfield assigned the
highway/airport paving crew that usesthe SB-2500 Shuttle Buggy to theMeeker Airport project, “because Iwanted the advantage of continuouspaving the Shuttle Buggy provides.”The Shuttle Buggy can store up to
15 tons (13.6 t) of asphalt mix, allow-
ing haul vehicles to unload as soon asthey arrive. The large storage capacityis said to not only help reduce truckcycles and hauling costs, but providean uninterrupted, continual flow ofmaterial to the paver. The SB-2500 features an anti-segre-
gation auger, which remixes materialsto address aggregate and temperaturesegregation issues. Pavement lifespantests, as they relate to temperature seg-regation during the paving process, have shown that a temperature differ-ential of less than seven-degreesCelsius in the mat behind the paver arekey to even compaction and thereforepavement durability.Infrared imaging capturing paved
surfaces where the Shuttle BuggyMTV has been used reveals a qualityadvantage. In infrared imaging testsconducted by Roadtec in the UnitedStates as well as in Europe, the resultsshow the machine consistently remixesto achieve temperature differentialbelow the seven-degree temperaturethreshold. With the Meeker Airport project,
United Companies believed that theShuttle Buggy was instrumental in pre-venting asphalt mix segregation at somany points during the paving process.“Even though our production plant
happened to be located very close tothe site, we understand that a lot canhappen to the FAA-spec HMA even
during a short transport,” Bottenfieldsaid. “The Shuttle Buggy gave us thedistinct advantage of continuouspaving by ensuring the material is thor-oughly mixed and at the right temp –we’re not waiting for the plant or deliv-ery trucks since the shuttle buggy hasample storage capacity to ensure thecontinual flow of asphalt to the paver.”Bottenfield credited the Shuttle
Buggy with helping to “ensure we hadalmost no rework on this project — wehad just a few spots requiring grind-ing.”The United Companies acquired its
Shuttle Buggy MTV from a sister com-pany that had upgraded to a newermodel. Currently, the company appearsto be the only contractor in westernColorado that has a MTV.“Because we have the Shuttle
Buggy, we have a competitive advan-tage since we’re seeing FederalHighway Administration specs comingthrough specifically requiring that aShuttle Buggy be used, because theyknow the machine offers quality andconsistency advantages,” saidBottenfield. The final International Roughness
Index of the recently completedMeeker Airport runway surface waswell within the FAA specifications. Both the dirt and paving crews ofUnited Companies were pleased withthe work they’ve completed on thenow upgraded Meeker Airport. As Boone said. “We can’t argue
about the quality of the finishedresults…the smoothness of the runwaypavement can speak for itself.”

TheDeutz 55.4 kW 4-cylinder dieselengine is fitted with a diesel oxida-tion catalyser (DOC) to reduce par-ticulate emissions. The cooling sys-tem also meets the most up-to-datedemands: two separately controlledfans ensure optimum cooling ofcharge air, hydraulic oil and enginecoolant. At the same time, the load-depend-ent fan control for engine cooling saves fueland reduces noise emissions. The larger rollers HD+ 90i and HD+ 110i
(85 kW) as well as HD+ 120i and HD+ 140i(115 kW) are available with new Tier IVi-compliant engines now.All these rollers come with the
Hammtronic machine management systemas standard. This means optimized perform-ance, minimized fuel consumption, engineoperation in the optimum load range at alltimes and high-quality, consistent com-paction through control of the traction andparameters such as speed and frequency.
Maximum ComfortThe HD+ 70i and HD+ 80i rollers offer a
spacious XXL platform resp. cab with a lat-erally adjustable seat. The powerful heater(option) also can be complemented with airconditioning if desired. Drivers have an enhanced view of the
roller drum and water sprinkler. As there are
no intruding pillars, they also overview thesurrounding area. Meanwhile the operatingconsole and display remains in the field ofview at all times, being attached to the seat. Despite the comfortable interior head-
room, the overall height of the new HD+ 70iand HD+ 80i models is 2 in. (5 cm) less thantheir forerunners. This facilitates transportand working in areas with limited overheadclearance. Hamm also can supply the newHD+ 70i and HD+ 80i models with ROPSroof or sun shield roof.
Top-Class Handling and HighCompaction Power
The handling and compaction qualities ofthe new tandem rollers are based on the idealweight distribution, so they quickly produceperfectly even surfaces, according to themanufacturer. Moreover, a stepless frequen-cy adjustment is provided. When reversing, the automatic transmission provides gentleacceleration and braking, playing its part inensuring even asphalt layers without bulges
or hollows. In addition, the crab steering mode offset
has been increased by 40 percent comparedto the previous HD 75 model. This results inplenty of clearance for clean edge pressing.
Productivity Comes as StandardWith a large water and diesel tank, both
new models are equipped for long workingdays: the capacities enable working a fullshift without refilling. Maximum availabili-ty is provided by a water sprinkler systemwith a second water pump. The water quan-tity can be fine-tuned by the push of a buttonand an indicator shows constantly the resid-ual volume of water in the tank.
New: Telematics and Rear-View Cameras
The HD+ series now features a telematicsinterface, which can be used to transmit datafor use in fleet management systems. It alsocan be used for remote monitoring or fortheft protection. The VEDA option for the
HCQ measurement and documentation sys-tem enables the export of data in conformitywith the US analysis software “Veda” forcomprehensive compaction control inasphalt construction.Optional rear view cameras ensure even
more safety. A 5.6 in. display allows thedriver to check for the presence of people orobstructions in the area immediately behindthe roller at any time.
Award-Winning DesignSince its launch in 2010, the HD+ series
has received multiple awards for its success-ful design and usability, amongst them the iFdesign award 2010 in gold, the red dotdesign award 2010, the American “GoodDesign Award” and the French “Observeurdu design.” For more information, visit

Vogele’s Super 2100-3i SavesFuel, Boosts Productivity
Vögele’s 47,179-lb. (21,400 kg) Super2100-3i is the successor to the Super 2100-2,and is the most powerful paver of the newDash 3 generation from Vögele. As such it’sideal for major paving projects incorporatingall types of hot mix asphalt — includingpremium mixes such as stone matrix asphalt,as well as cement-treated base and rollercompacted concrete — with ease in a varietyof widths from 8 ft. 4 in. to 42 ft. 6 in. (2.5 to13 m), according to the manufacturer. The theme of the Dash 3 generation is that
lower fuel consumption leads to lower emis-sions, which leads to lower costs. TheVögele EcoPlus low-emissions packagecombines a number of individual measures, which reduce the fuel consumption andnoise of the Dash 3 pavers:Fuel consumption is minimized in a num-
ber of ways. When the paver is stationarywhile waiting, all hydraulic pumps for trac-tion, conveyors and augers and compactingsystems are automatically disengaged afterabout one minute. Reducing drag also makesit easier to start the paver at low outside tem-peratures.The tamper is driven by a variable dis-
placement pump, which delivers the amountof oil needed for the current tamper speed, also saving fuel. The speed of the variable-speed fan auto-
matically adjusts in line with engine load andambient temperature, as well as the temper-ature of the oil and cooling water. The fan isdriven via a viscous coupling in accordancewith temperature and engine load. In con-trast to a hydraulic drive, this new type of fandrive stands out through its considerablygreater energy efficiency, while being verymuch quieter, according to the manufacturer. The user-friendly ErgoPlus 3 operating
system has been enhanced with useful sup-plementary features for the new Dash 3 gen-eration. The redesigned color display, forexample, has an intuitive, high-contrast userinterface, providing readability even in poorlighting conditions. The Super 2100-3i’s AutoSet Plus feature
has two automatic functions. The automaticrepositioning function facilitates the continu-ation of work when moving on the job sitefrom one work section to another, or after thepaver has been transported. The automatic function for paving pro-
grams in Vögele pavers, on the other hand, allows operating personnel to store specificpaving programs in the paving process.Values for tamper and vibration speed, con-veyor and auger speed, height of the augerand paving speed are stored at the push of abutton. Once stored, the program can then beretrieved and reused whenever needed.Vögele sets new standards in terms of
compaction. Vögele’s high compaction tech-nology is based on pressure bar(s) technolo-gy, driven by pulsed flow hydraulics.Pressure bars comprise the core of Vögelehigh performance compaction screeds for awide variety of paving media, and make asubstantial contribution to the high-qualityand economical building of roads. For more information, call 615/501-0600

economy. Among the sectors thatbenefit the most are service indus-tries such as business, education, health and leisure, and hospitality. The study also finds that 62 per-
cent of the jobs created from feder-al highway and mass transit invest-ments are outside the constructionindustry. Over one-third of all jobscreated also are in service indus-tries like business, education, health and leisure, and hospitality.“The study shows that invest-
ment in transportation infrastruc-ture has a positive impact on everymajor sector of the U.S. economy. These far reaching economic bene-fits contribute to economic growthby improving the nation’s capitalstock, which enables increasedeconomic activity,” said KarenCampbell, a senior consultant atIHS, who produced the report withBob Brodesky, a transportationexpert and senior manager in theIHS Industry Consulting Group.Current federal highway and
public transit investment, which is
about $50 billion annually, gener-ates an average $31 billion in per-sonal income tax receipts per yearand $6 billion in federal corporatetax receipts per year due toincreased economic activity, according to the analysis. Thisamounts to 74 cents returned onevery dollar invested.IHS noted that current levels of
federal investment on highway andpublic transit spending contributenearly one percent to the U.SGross Domestic Product (GDP),the measure of goods and servicesproduced by the economy. Amongthe other economic benefits:• Every $1 in federal highway
and mass transit investmentincreases the nation’s GDPbetween $1.80 to $2.00• Current federal transportation
spending contributes on average$410 to real income per householdeach year.IHS also studied the resulting
impacts from five percent annualincreases in federal highway andtransit investment from 2014-2019, and found the added invest-ment would create:• Between 78,000 and 122,000
new jobs by 2019 (includes direct, indirect, and induced jobs);• An annual average increase of
$40 in real household income each
year;• An additional $9.6 billion in
real GDP for the U.S. economy by2019; and• On average an additional $4.9
billion per year in federal, state andlocal government revenue.“Federal transportation spend-
ing expands the capital stock of theU.S. economy, drives the produc-tion and delivery of goods andservices, and positively affectsbusiness and household incomes,”the study’s authors write. “It alsoenhances the transportation sys-tem’s operational capacity byreducing travel times and costs. This results in greater accessibility
for individuals, households andbusinesses, more efficient deliveryof goods and services, improvedlifestyles, and standards of living, and safer roadways.”The members of the
Transportation ConstructionCoalition (TCC), which commis-sioned the study, said they wouldsend it to all congressional officesto help them better understand theurgency for a permanent solutionfor the Highway Trust Fund wellbefore May 2015, when fundingfor the highway and transit pro-gram will once again be in jeop-ardy for the sixth time since 2008.The TCC is issuing this reportahead of the upcoming congres-sional recess, when many coalitionmembers will be meeting withtheir elected officials at home. For more information, visit
