Hon members in need of application It is hard these days to take so much as a step in Westminster without bumping into an MP brandishing an iPad purchased by thee and me. But not satisfied with milking public funds to buy the swanky hi-tech gadgets, politicians have now commissioned a special application to fool around with between games of Fruit Ninja. The “app” allows them to view information about their constituencies, such as the latest employment rate, population, information about their major businesses etc – although it’s hard to see how any member worth his or her salt would not already have these details at their fingertips. The cost of the project is not yet known, but is likely to run into thousands of pounds. The House’s administration committee, chaired by Tory Sir Alan Haselhurst, will start testing the application at the end of the month. More than 220 MPs have now been issued iPads, at a cost of well over £150,000 to the taxpayer. Amazingly, 22 members have been handed two - and Labour’s Tom Harris has received three. David Cameron managed to blag his official iPad free from Apple – but he is also thought to own a personal one he uses for “chillaxing”. Follow Tim Walker on Twitter https://twitter.com/MandrakeTim
