The Next Generation Of OfficeSponsor: Allsteel Inc

BRIEF:

In a study of office productivity it was found that, on average, workers only spend 11 minutes on a specific task before being distracted. It takes approximately 25 minutes to return to the task once away. In order to produce meaningful work, individuals must be able to maintain concentration for a defined period of time. Spaces within the open office environment can facilitate concentrated focus for individuals as well as provide a space where small groups can accomplish uninterrupted work by eliminating distractions, supporting key activities, and accommodating necessary artifacts in the space.

This project will introduce a brand new design concept, which is a new kind of personal workspace that is open to conversation or collaboration, but still retains the privacy at the same time. It also provides an easy way to help people organize their stuff and focus on their work. It is functionality made beautiful.

RESEARCH PLANVirtual Collaboration Team #3 Patrick McNeley, Lin Wenhan, Jordan Davis, Christine Tran

1. Technical

Is there any software that would be compatible worldwide?

Will all users be able to maneuver the system with ease?

2. Miscommunication

How do we design to avoid verbal and physical miscommunication due to the situation?

3. Relationships

Is it difficult to bond, create trust, and build a relationship over virtual collaboration?

4. Schedules

How can you schedule virtual meetings with someone of a different time zones, holidays, and

schedules?

5. Cost

With all the expenses of technology, is virtual collaboration the most cost effective solution?

Possible research methodsInterview workers about experiences with collaborative virtual work.

Research problems with existing products in the market.

Contextual observations.

CONTEXUAL INQUIRY

COMMUNICATION OBSTACLESPhysical workspace is restricted in that it does not enable workers to see, hear, and communicate with each other. The process of the set up for virtual collaboration is an issue in that time is wasted to allow for anticipated connection issues.

SPACE ORGANIZATIONThings are getting busier, organization is getting tricky, people are more often resorting to web based organization. This physical is changing to virtual.

NEW TECHNOLOGYAdvanced technology continues to assist the office worker in every way.

COLLABORATION/DIFFERENT COLLABORATION AREASCollaborations are mainly taking place in conference rooms. Phones, email, and laptops are also being integrated into these areas as well.

MEETING PREP/COLLABORATION MANAGEMENTResponsibility for organizing meetings and setup is tending to be taken care of by team leads instead of corporate bosses.

TEAM STRUCTUREImportant to built trust and know who they are working with beyond virtual connection.

INTERACTION PREFERENCEIt helps to build a face-to-face connection from the start, then phone calls are adequate.Interaction preference depend on person and type of work..Email, phone, skype, and instant messaging

USER COMMENTS/ISSUESMain issues involve communication problems, time zones, call static, feedback, and dropped calls.Desk ergonomics and organization with multiple office locations: we are in mid transition from old to new, physical to electronic. Our means of working is condensing but the extra space is still there.

SATISFACTIONHaving a workspace that is both open enough to look around and feel free and personal enough to feel secure and work privately.

USER SUGGESTIONSPeople are getting more interested in customization of personal workspace.

Research Conclusion Next Step:

Market research is a key factor to maintain an advantage over compeitors. Market research provides important information to identify and analyze the market needs, market size, and competition. I learned an immense amount of information about Allsteel’s position in the market. The market need is an ever changing entity. There is a need for workers to be able to have an office in any setting they choose.

According to my research, privacy is user’s first concern. While, I believe that people felt they are not in private situation even they were is mainly because of psychological issue. So my goal is to fix this problem, help user to focus on their work and also provide a simple way for users to organize their space.

BRIEF:

Shock Doctor would like to present a new merchandising concept at retail to support the launch of two new lines SVR Compression and Ice Therapy. These two lines combined with our traditional PST line and insoles comprise the new marketing concept “the recovery center”. The objective and final deliverable of this project are to deliver a complete merchandising center that can be presented to our retail partners for placement into their stores beginning spring 2015. Every aspect of this concept should be considered from items in each line, their packaging, how each line relates to each other, to the “centers” branding and name, what does a merchandising “recovery center” look like, and how is the concept communicated to the consumer in store i.e., signage, video etc. What will make this center stand out and how will the consumers shop the center?

First Step

Page 11: Wenhan Lin Portfolio

First Step

To present a new merchadising concept that brings customers fresh shopping experiences by creating a story while designing packaging and fixture display, to help Shock Doctor to stand out their unique brand culture.

From my perspective, shopping is a journey of experience products and the story behind. In order to bring customers a whole different shopping experiences. There is something I need to do before start more specific research.First of all, It is very important to figure out who is the target customer groups. Moreover, i also believe that it is very important to mapping out customers shopping proccess. So it could helps me to know what is desired goal for each steps.

In order to differentiate four product line but keep the consistency at same time, I decided only change the color that used for each packaging. According to my research regarding color psychology, red presents corporate, exctiment, etc. The whole packaging design also fits my fixture design language as well.

Shock Doctor’s engineered compression products provide benefits during and after athletic activity. Compared to standard baselayer compression, SVR provides a high-er level of compression to support muscles and help remove waste so muscles are less sore and recover faster

During activity: SVR Compression helps athletes perform their best by providing support for hard work-ing musclesProvides support to minimize muscle vibrationReduces muscle fatigue and sorenessVentilation helps muscles perform their best without overheating

Post activity: SVR Compression helps athletes recover faster so they are less sore the next dayEnhances circulation to increase oxygen to musclesHelps muscles expel lactic acidReduces soreness and speeds recovery

THE STORY:

Recovery Center

According to my research and competitor analysis, I found out that storytelling is one of most important factors leading competitor’s fixture successful, while Shock Doctor currently doesn’t have. So throughout this fixture design part, I integrated story telling into the fixture design. The “Recovery Center” is about therapy, recovery, and wellness. Inspired by therapy and SPA room, I want to bring Shock Doctor customers the relaxing feeling. In order to do that, I used imagines, colors, and lighting to achieve the goal of story telling.

Beside this, I also integrated tablets into the fixture display. My intention is help customers to find which specific product among all the choices is the best one for them. I designed App prototype of the tablets. It also can helps customers to compare the feature and price between products. I believe that by using the App, Shock Doctor customer can get to know their products much further.

Moreover, I believed that good indoor experience could also effect customers purchase decision a lot, especially for the sport equipment product.

In the context of product design, it refers to the use of form and other visual cues to communicate. Your message can be about function, operation, safety, emotion, or brand. In this project, we will be emphasizing the brand semantics of products, or how a brand’s core values and characteristics can be preserved in the shape and treatment within a platform of products.

コンセプト説明 / Concept Explanation

With the blooming of technology development, we have more and more technical devices need to charge so that we can use. So we need more plug-in and power strips than before. While sometimes it won’t fit if the two plug in are too close. Some wider power strip is too big which makes space crowd. So the intention of power strip I designed is to solve these two issues. The power strip I designed is very similliar with power strip we can see in market. While this power strip could actually pull out. In this way, not only we can fit all the devices we need to charge in the power strip, but also could hang on the hooker to save space.
