THESIS. The architectural process has been conventionalized over years of practice. So much so, that with new and diverse means of representation being introduced, architectural process has overlooked innovative methods of design and project process. As a means of comparison, typical conventions should be considered. However, inventive and explorative processes should be introduced as alternative representations to the architectural profession. These processes can provide multiple lenses of perspective, design integration, and understanding of the key elements needed to frame a project’s outcome. CONVENTIONAL PROCESS. The conventional process consists of a linear approach through one lens consisting of precedent analysis, program adjacency diagrams, plans, sections, perspectives, etc. The process of these drawings follow typical conventions used throughout the architectural discipline. CONCEPTUAL PROCESS. The conceptual process usually starts with some sort of conceptual diagram, model, drawing, etc. It proceeds through varies paths of exploration or its sole purpose is only to jump start ideas for an architectural project. However, many of these ideas or paths get left behind as the project develops into the conventional process or only one path is chosen to be carried onward. COMPLETE COVERAGE PROCESS. The complete coverage process is a combination of the two previous processes. However, it is still a linear process with little room for deviation or exploration. EXPLORATIVE PROCESS. The explorative process spends a longer duration on the conceptual process of a project exploring multiple paths of representation. It promotes multiple lenses and filters to be used simultaneously as a means to develop the project together. The relationships between the varying methods can be used as techniques to define the intents for the conventional progression of the project. However, alternative conventions can be introduced to further define the project and its intents. METHODOLOGY. Diagrammatic Analyses & Mapping CONCLUSION. The explorative design process ultimately developes a syntax for the project. It is able to grasp multiple layers and techniques, while still providing the ability to taper these techniques toward a specific project goal or outcome. EXERCISE 4.0 : VISIBLE CERTAINTY DANA WELLS

THESIS.The architectural process has been conventionalized over years of practice.

CONVENTIONAL PROCESS.The conventional process consists of a linear approach through one lens consisting of precedent analysis, program adjacency diagrams, plans, sections, perspectives, etc. The process of these drawings follow typical conventions used throughout the architectural discipline.

CONCEPTUAL PROCESS.The conceptual process usually starts with some sort of conceptual diagram, model, drawing, etc. It proceeds through varies paths of exploration or its sole purpose is only to jump start ideas for an architectural project. However, many of these ideas or paths get left behind as the project develops into the conventional process or only one path is chosen to be carried onward.

COMPLETE COVERAGE PROCESS.The complete coverage process is a combination of the two previous processes. However, it is still a linear process with little room for deviation or exploration.

EXPLORATIVE PROCESS.The explorative process spends a longer duration on the conceptual process of a project exploring multiple paths of representation. It promotes multiple lenses and fi lters to be used simultaneously as a means to develop the project together. The relationships between the varying methods can be used as techniques to defi ne the intents for the conventional progression of the project. However, alternative conventions can be introduced to further defi ne the project and its intents.

METHODOLOGY.Diagrammatic Analyses & Mapping

CONCLUSION.The explorative design process ultimately developes a syntax for the project. It is able to grasp multiple layers and techniques, while still providing the ability to taper these techniques toward a specifi c project goal or outcome.
