Miss Wegloski’s Social Sciences Web QuestYour goal as students is to create a PowerPoint presentation that illustrates the impact of the president that you chose. During the final presentation, you should be able to recognize why your president had a role in the shaping of Social Sciences as a whole.

While doing this online-only research students should keep the following questions in mind: Why is my president important for other classmates to know about? How has my president contributed to our society and what impacts has he made that we can still see today?

Page 3: WELCOME TO YOUR 8 TH Grade “Project Week” Web quests!

Day 1- Monday…or Let’s Find Our Favorite President Day!

Students will use the following three questions in determining which president they would like to choose for further research. Students will research 5 presidents, at their own choosing, to answer the following questions based on internet research:

When did this president serve? When was he elected and how long did he serve?

Was he a Republican or a Democrat? In your opinion, what was this President’s main contribution to America?

What was he best known for?

A good place to start is www.whitehouse.gov/about/presidents

Day 2- Tuesday…or Lets decide who our favorite President is!

After yesterday’s research of 5 presidents, students will decide which of the five they would like to do further online research on. I will randomly call names for the students to sign up for their president so we do not have two students doing the same research.

Consider the following questions for today’s research: Who did he run for office against? What were his main goals to accomplish when he became

president? What did he do during his term that he is best remembered

by? Why is he important for your classmates to know about? How do you think he has impacted our current society?

Page 5: WELCOME TO YOUR 8 TH Grade “Project Week” Web quests!

Day 3- Wednesday…or More Research Day!

Students will continue their independent internet research of their president and begin to shape their PowerPoint presentation for Friday.

Things to think about: What would be the best order to present this president’s

information in? What other things about this president stand out to you? What would our current society be like if he were never

president?

Day 4- Thursday…or Let’s Make our PowerPoint Day!

Students will gather their information and organize it into PowerPoint to be presented on Friday.

Things to think about: Your presentation should be 4-6 slides Decide which information should make it into your

presentation One page must answer the question: “How has this

President had a role in the Social Sciences?” (How has he shaped America?)

What pictures, if any, will help support your presentation What would this president want us to know about him?

MONDAY Research

You will navigate to The Thirty Greatest Mathematicians website. http://fabpedigree.com/james/greatmm.htm

Research the top 5 Mathematicians of all time◦ Isaac Newton ◦ Carl F. Gauss ◦ Leonhard Euler ◦ Archimedes ◦ Bernhard Riemann

Assignment: Due on Tuesday◦ Print out the information about each individual and bring them to class. ◦ Read the background story for all 5 Mathematicians

TUESDAY – WEDNESDAYSummary

•Pick 1 of the 5 Mathematicians that you researched for today's class

•Assignment: Due on Thursday• Go to Wikipedia and type in your mathematician

• Conduct more research• Print and turn in the mathematicians' Wikipedia page

• Complete a 3 paragraph summary on the Mathematician of your choice• Why you picked him?• What did he do? Type of math?• What did you learn?

• Go to Google Images and type in the Mathematician of your choice. Include one picture for your summary

Learning Objectives

Students will learn how to:• Use periodic table

• Find elements on table• Look up protons, electrons and calculate

neutrons.

MONDAY :ADOPT AN ELEMENTFor this project, you willResearch an element from the periodic

table and choose one element you would like to know more about. You may use the following websites for your research:

Tuesday: Create an advertisement

The advertisements are used to create a large periodic table on a wall outside my classroom. The advertisement must be colorful, neat, and contain the required information - atomic number, atomic mass, symbol, element's name, advertising slogan, and cost. Students must create a slogan that is related to the their element's uses.

Page 16: WELCOME TO YOUR 8 TH Grade “Project Week” Web quests!

Wednesday- Atomic Attire

You will design your own shirt, apron or lab coat. Your attire will feature one element from the periodic table on an apron, shirt, or

lab coat using permanent markers or fabric paint to complete the protons,

electrons, and neutrons on the electron cloud model. The key is completed

and additional information including the discoverer, year discovered, natural

state, and uses for the element are identified and permanently painted onto

the individualized, wearable project.

Page 17: WELCOME TO YOUR 8 TH Grade “Project Week” Web quests!

For this project you will need to use the Internet to research the elements

in the Periodic Table. Each card must include:

Periodic Table informationNumber of protons, neutrons, and electrons

Discovery information (Person and date)

Important Uses Pictures that illustrate one or more

uses for your element

Fill in the square with the information from the periodic table. * Be sure to follow the same format! Determine the number of protons (P), neutrons (N), and electrons (E). Research your element to find out who discovered or named your element and give the year. Provide at least 3 uses for your element. Provide one or more pictures on the back of the trading card that illustrate

Thursday- Game timeCard Trading-online research

Friday- PresentationThis is it. Showcase your work to your

classmates. The rubric should be your checklist to make sure that all your work is complete and done. Please be clear, loud and present your work in a serious manner. Points will be given to content and presentation. Good luck.
