Aims of this Evening
• Highlight option choices available at Grove • The process of selecting options• What support is available for you and your
son/daughter• An opportunity to speak to subject teachers
and other staff about the subjects on offer
What has happened so far?
All students have also had the opportunity to:•Discuss subject choices with their Guidance Leader•Discuss subject choices with subject teachers•Focus in PSHEE/C•All students have been provided with resources to inform their subject choices
Qualifications Structure• In Years 10 – 11 most students will gain up to Level 2
qualifications like GCSE’s• Students who are not ready for level 2 will study for level 1
qualifications (we will suggest students who should study at level 1)
Qualifications Structure• In post–16 education students can gain level 3 qualifications like
A levels or level 2 qualifications (both offered at Grove College)• Vocational qualifications and apprenticeships are also available
at level 3 at post - 16
Qualifications Structure
• Beyond level 3 qualifications students can access higher education qualifications (e.g. undergraduate degree)
Choosing Subjects
• Students have subjects that they must study – these are called core subjects
• Students have subjects they can choose to study– these are called option subjects

• English Language & English Literature• Maths• Science• ICT• Religious Studies• PSHEE/C• PE
There is no exam in PSHEE/C or PE
Option Subjects• Art and Design• Business Studies• Child Development• Certificate of Personal
Effectiveness (CoPE)• D&T- Electronics• D&T- Food• D&T- Product Design• D&T- Textiles• Drama
• French• Geography• German• History• ICT• Media Studies• Music• Physical Education
(Cambridge Technical)• Spanish
Subject Selection
Students will need to do the following:•Select three subjects•Select a reserve subject•Select a ‘Third Session’ subject (optional)
How should my child select their options?
Your child needs to consider:•Use the checklist on the back of the options booklet•Select a wide range of subjects to keep future career paths open•Speak to your Tutor•Speak to your Subject Teacher
How should my child select their options?
Parents please listen out for:
“My friend is doing…….”
“My favourite teacher is……”
Not good reasons to select a subject!
Third Session
This provides students with the opportunity to study an additional GCSE after school. This is offered in:•Art and Design•Spanish
Third session is dependent on a viable number of students selecting this as an option in each subject
Broad and balanced curriculum
It is important that students select a range of subjects that will enable them to access further and higher education
When considering a broad and balanced curriculum students may want to consider selecting a combination of:•A language•An Humanities-based subject•A Technology-based subject•A Creative/Performing Arts-based subject
How will the options be selected?
On Monday 2nd February in Tutor time the following process will happen:•Each tutor will be allocated a computer room•Students will access the options form from Moodle (students will need to know their Grove School email)•Students complete online form•Letter sent home to parents to confirm option choices with reply slip
