Welcome to Vertex 2013

1

The 22nd International workshop on vertex detectors

Organized by:

Max Planck Institute for Physics, MunichMax Planck Institute for extraterrestrial Physics, GarchingSemiconductor Laboratory of the Max Planck Society

at Berg, lake Starnberg in Bavaria

I would like to thank our sponsors:• CiS• finetech• HAMAMMATSU

The workshop

2

This year is marked by the end of a really long operation of LHCWe expect reports on the running experience of the vertex detectors in LHC experiments(including ‘lessons learned’).

We will hear about LHC detector’s upgrade plans (present and phase II).

New experiments will be ready in the near future: Star, Belle II, Panda, CBS.

In the more distant future we expect ILC, which is pushed again after some agony.

We include ‘other applications’ like at Free Electron Lasers, Electron Microscopy etc.

There will be many talks on detector technology, radiation hardness, electronics, system aspects and new developments

In addition I hope for interesting and fruitful discussion – in the sessions or outside.

I want to thank all speakers for coming to this workshop and preparing their talks!

Practical Information

4

WLAN: the access code works for one machine and for 24hPlease ask Patricia if you run out of access codes

Upload of talks: Please prepare your talk on a memory stick and contact the scientific secretaries (or any of the organisers) the day before the talk, latest the break before your session.

The proceedings for Vertex 2013 will be published on PoS

• authors will be contacted by the organisers and provided with login data to access their personal pages on PoS (where the style files are available)

• page limit: 10 pages

• from their PoS pages authors can upload a PDF file (plus any attachments), with a simple two-step procedure. The deadline for submissions is December 31st, 2013

About the Region

6

Lake Starnberg:

The lake is (like many others in Bavaria) a relict of the Ica AgeThe glaciers from the alps extended up to the north end (Starnberg) and formed the lake (during the Würm period, 10,000 years ago)

The lake has an area for 55 km², is 19.5 km long and 4.7 km wide and up to 127m deep.

The lake has no large river as inlet but gets its water from wells. Hence the lake has still its original shape unlike many others which have already been filled up by 50% (Ammersee, Chiemsee) by the debris brought by the rivers.

A bit of Bavarian History

7

Berg is the place where the Bavarian king Ludwig II died.

Ludwig lived from 1846 to 1886.

He didn’t achieve anything important politically and socially(except he was a fan of Richard Wagner and sponsored him) but got famous for building fancy castles.

Of course these excessive activities ruined the Bavarian state with the consequence that he was declared made and incapacitated by his own government. He was sent to Berg in 1886. June 13, 1886 he was found drowned in the lake, together with his physician. The circumstances of his death still remain a mystery, various theories claim either an accident, or suicide (official version) or even murder.Because or despite of these he was and still is very popular in Bavaria.A cross marks where Ludwig’s body was found and a chapel was build in his memory.
