(Fr. Eugene Eburuche, SMMM, has lived in our parish rectory for the last four years. A native of Nigeria, he serves as prison chaplain at the California Institution for Men here in Chino. We don’t get to see him as much as we’d like, but he’s always available to help as needed. Some of you know him quite well; others might like to know a little more about him.) How long have you been in prison ministry, Fr. Eugene? Seven years. What attracted you to this ministry? (Laughing) I’m not sure. I think I got involved by accident. These men are often the forgotten ones. They are the ones Jesus mentions in Mathew 25 when he says: I was in prison, and you visited me. What are some things you like about your ministry? I find the men very receptive. They really welcome the Gospel message. Some of them really change their lives. What do you find difficult in your ministry? Well, prison of its nature is not a very good place. Besides being a very difficult place to begin with, there is a lot of moving around. Sometimes people preparing for first sacraments are moved to a different facility in the middle of formation. Also, because of all the state budgetary cut-backs, it is an ongoing struggle to get even the minimum materials I need for ministry --- like missalettes, books, vestments, even bread and wine! Also, it’s not easy to find volunteers to commit themselves to help me. What keeps you going in such a challenging ministry? The Spirit of God keeps me going. I love what I’m doing. People give a lot of prayer and other support: people outside and the inmates themselves. Thanks for these few minutes. We’re glad you live in our parish. Plus, you seem to make Fr. Mike laugh and keep in a good mood.
(Riéndose) No estoy seguro.
