Where it all Began

Page 13: Welcome to the - WNY Advising€¦ · Dina Moati, Sheridan College Mark Onesi, University at Buffalo Amie Pistrin-Faust, Erie Community College John Sauter (Chair), Niagara University

Laura’s passion in the field of advising and more specifically use of social media in higher education has pushed me to have my department have a much more solid presence in the digital community. I think the phrase “same old, same old” doesn’t exist in Laura’s mind, and it’s because of that that she is having such a positive impact on the higher education community.

- Bill Newton, Niagara University

"I have the pleasure of being able to have Laura as a colleague and friend. As such, I learn much from her; enjoy laughing at silly things with her; and get to enjoy working with her on creative and interesting projects. Laura's passion for helping students achieve success, finds fruition through her unique ability to blend pedagogy with technology. Too often in our field of advising, one approach seems to dominate the other. She offers a perfect blend. As advisors and educators, we are all very fortunate that she so personable and willing to share her knowledge and insights with us.” George Steele - Aviso Coaching

Laura Pasquini is a do-er. She took a little idea I put out into the Twitterverse (what if we started a weekly chat about academic advising?) and made it happen. Almost 6 years later, the #acadv chat still provides free professional development and timely conversation on a regular basis for academic advisors across the country (and sometimes even around the globe). Her willingness to share information and connect people to scholarly research articles helps me keep on top of relevant topics in technology and education.

Sarah Howard - The Ohio State University

I joined the Tweetchat stream and found a welcoming and engaged group of fellow advisors. Laura was the most active and encouraging of the group – and continues to be one of the most active and engaging figures in our community all these years later....I credit a lot of my professional growth to the experiences I have had (and continue to have) with the AcAdvChat group, the Tech in Advising Commission, and more specifically, the many opportunities I have had to connect with and learn from Laura!

Laura is always teaching me, and she probably doesn’t even know it. I follow Laura on a lot of social media platforms, and whenever I see her posts, I find something that I need to google right away because I have no idea what she’s saying. Through this, she is always teaching me new things about interacting with technology that help better me in all areas of my life, and she probably doesn’t even know about this little practice I have. I’m grateful just for the opportunity to follow her!

Laura has done a terrific job of “expanding the boundaries of interest” for SA professionals. Her wide-ranging interests and her able communication of her interests and work means that advisors are continually reminded to be future-focused and similarly broad-minded in their approaches to research, tools, professional development, and life interests.

Jennifer Joslin, NACADA Executive Office

Laura has taken a chance on me, allowing me to grow professionally as a researcher by being part of her team. She inspires me to ask questions, to follow my instincts, to develop as an advisor. I'm forever grateful for our friendship.

Sara Ackerson - Washington State University, Vancouver

I first met Laura at a NACADA conference in Minnesota. It was at a social tweetup. Laura eventually had to leave, citing the need to respond to student emails. Even while at a conference her promise to her students of a reply in 24 hours was iron clad. That is who Laura is. Someone who is consistently dedicated to the education and service of others. She continually demonstrates this ethic through her courses, her writings, engagement through professional associations, and via social media.

Thomas Dickson, Ph.D. - University of Arizona

Laura's default mode is to include. Because of this, she encourages and inspires the development of a professional identity in those who she includes. I'm not sure if she knows this, or if it is an intentional effort on her part. But if it is, it does not come across that way. It seems genuine. It seems natural. And it is a large part of why I am the Advisor that I am. I have known Laura for while now, from local to regional to annual conferences, and she is consistently and constantly an includer and I am glad for it.

Ryan Scheckel - Texas Tech University

The Value of NarrativeAs an advisor I greatly value connections with others, and in the past two years I have really begun to understand the power of personal narratives. I am very glad that my narrative includes Laura as a friend, colleague, and mentor.John Sauter, Ph.D - Niagara University / WNY Advising
