The Textile Design concentration offers students the opportunity to explore individual creativity, cross boundaries, and create contemporary work. Students study a variety of techniques, technologies, and cultural contexts to develop creative, fiber-based art. Using diverse technologies and traditional concepts of repetition to build connection, students explore the broad-reaching impact of textiles to illuminate social issues and personal experiences through a studio practice. The Textile Design concentration includes classes in structure and surface strategies and their integration for unique/innovative work. These courses focus on dyeing (inclusive of all fiber contents, natural and synthetic), weaving (4Harness through to TC2 digital jacquard), printing (screen, alternative, and digital), felting (traditional and dimensional), off-loom (crochet, knit, netting, spinning), construction with and on cloth, and digital design of repeats and structures. The curriculum culminates in portfolio development and a final exhibition. Welcome to the School of Art and Design! Textile Design Concentration

Textile Design area facilities

The Textile Design studios are well-equipped with work tables, tools, and supplies, including two exposure units, a dark room, and sewing room. The weaving rooms have 28 floor looms with 4, 8, 10, 12, 16, and 20 harness looms, including 16 brand new Macomber looms. The Dye Lab hosts multiple print tables, induction burners, sinks, washer and dryer, two large steaming units, and a spray booth. We have a separate work room for dry processes and felt making. Our Digital Weaving Lab houses a 6-module TC-2 hand-jacquard loom and five 24-harness AVL looms. We have a wide-format Epson fabric printer and three knitting machines - two manual and one digital. In addition, Textile Design seniors have access to a large studio space where they have individual work spaces and storage, print tables, sinks, and critique walls.

The Textile Design program offers a strong foundation in traditional textile processes and builds upon that knowledge with digital techniques, culminating in a conceptual body of work for Senior Show exhibition. The faculty work to establish relationships with local companies to help secure internships/apprenticeships for students who are interested in textile design. Our students are prepared for a variety of avenues once they graduate. They have secured design positions in companies such as Nike, Abercrombie and Fitch, Belk, and Crate and Barrel. Students work at local textile and interior design companies, such as Watson In-Home Designs and Parrot Canvas, as well as regional and national companies including Spoonflower and King Textiles. Some students choose to continue their studies in graduate programs such as Drexel University, Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), and Rhode Island School of Design (RISD). Students have also gone on to entrepreneurial opportunities, becoming working artists and establishing their own fibers companies. In particular, one former graduate co-founded Casa Flor Designs, a socially conscience weaving design company in Guatamala.

Weaving Rooms

Two nationally and internationally exhibited artists, Robin L. Haller and Gabrielle Duggan, teach the courses offered in the program. Robin and Gabe have a wealth of knowledge in a variety of textile techniques, including both traditional and digital, as well as sculptural and installation- based art. Their areas of expertise complement each other, resulting in a diverse education for Textile Design students. In addition, students are exposed to numerous renowned teachers and instructors with both national and international reputations through guest artist workshops and presentations. Our Textile Design Guild is a student-run organization that coordinates visiting artists for lectures and workshops, attends textile symposiums/conferences, and organizes student activities such as the Annual Holiday Sale and other social activities.
