• Downward leadership and upward leadership are needed in balance to be effective.

• Neither can work alone. • In order for organizational leadership to

be effective leadership needs to occur at every level of an organization and every member of the org needs to be led from time to time.

1. Building your supervisor’s confidence in you requires you have confidence in your supervisors.

2. The vital bond between you and your boss cannot form without open and honest communication.

3. Persistence often pays, but you have to accept that sometimes you will win, but mostly you will lose or be told no. (like, 90% of the time)

4. Take advantage of any opportunity to transcend the org chart and meet or present to the big bosses. This will help you build the confidence you can handle anything.

5. If you are not sure what your boss wants, then ask for directions!

6. If you have more than one boss then it is important to treat each one as an individual. Do not place one job in order of importance.

7. Sometimes we have mean bosses and vengeful messages. It is then our job to insulate co-workers and to manage the message when possible.

8. In times of uncertainty make your voice heard with clarity. A time of reorganization or reform is a great chance to shine!

9. Leading up is a two way street. In order for you to lead up you must encourage your staff to do the same. Thus you must learn to be lead.

10. Over time confidence and innovation will wane and you will reach a plateau. That is a time to find new challenges to freshen the pot!

11. Never forget those people who allow you to lead up. A solid staff instills confidence from higher ups.

12. Stay in tune to what your staff is saying to you. Many times they understand the current trends on campus better than you do.

13. Make sure your co-workers understand your strategy. If you want support from them then they need to understand your perspective.

14. Every organization has an ebb and flow and talented people at all levels. Leading up also means leading across and letting others lead from time to time.
