Agriculturewas�irstestablishedintheTularosaBasinabout2,000yearsago!Today,our

maincropsarealfalfa,pecans,pistachios,andwinegrapes.

Although it appears dry and forbidding on the surface,

theTularosaBasinsitsoveranaquiferofunconsolidated

valley �ill thatapproaches5,000’deep.Groundwater in

the�illrangesindepthfromseveralhundredfeettoonly

afewinchesbelowgroundlevel!

Almost fourhundredyears ago the

�irst wine grapes were planted in

NewMexicosoilattheSanAntonio

DePaduaMission located justsouthofSocorro,NewMexico.High

quality Mission variety grapes have been grown in the Tularosa

Basinsincethe1860s.Today,severalvineyardsgrowmultiplevari­

etiesofwinegrapes.TheTularosaBasinWineandMusicFestival,

celebrated each September, features the wines and wineries of

southernNewMexico.

TheTularosaBasinhasbecomeakeylocationforracehorsebreedingandtraining.Crys­

tal Springs Farm, the pre­eminent horse farm in the area, is just an hour’sdrive from

famous RuidosoDowns and two hours from Sunland Park (El Paso). Next door is the

Paul Jones Racing Stables, home of some of the

�inest and fastest quarter horses in the nation.

lentracehorsetrainingfacility.

Horse racing isn’t theonly story though: trail rid­

ing is an extremely popular activity. There are

countlessmiles of improved trails in the 1.1mil­

lion acre LincolnNational Forest. In addition, the

BLMoffers60milesofhorsetrailsatFortStanton

nearRuidoso.

Alamogordo is the major crossroads of southern

NewMexico:USHighways54,70and82meethere.

The town is a tourist destination serving White

SandsNationalMonument,andisthegatewaytothe

mountainsofsouthernNewMexico,theLincolnNa­

tionalForest,andthemountainresortcommunities.

Alamogordo is thehost city forHollomanAirForce

Base,homeoftheUSAirForce49Wing,aswellastheGermanAirForceFlying

TrainingCenter.Alamogordo’spopulationisjustover34,000.

Tularosa—CityofRoses

Founded in1863, thehistoric villageofTularosa is

noted for its abundance of cottonwood shade trees

and its preservationof the adobe­style architecture

of its past. Tularosa’s population is just over2,600.

Tularosa recentlywas named byAmerican Cowboy

magazine as one of the “20 Best Places to Live the

West”.

LaLuz

In l863 settlers escaping from :loods on the Rio

Grande near Socorro settled here. El Presidio Park

withitsadobewalls,surroundedbythebuildingsof

thevillage,bearsthatdate.Today,LaLuzhasapop­

ulationofabout1,650andremainsahavenofpeace

andtranquilityjustthreemilesnorthofAlamogordo.

Cloudcroft—9,000FeetAboveTheStressLevel

Withitscoolsummersandsnowactivitiesinwinter,

Cloudcroftisthepremiertouristdestinationforwest

TexasandsouthernNewMexico,andhostsvacation­

ers from all over the world. Cloudcroft is a great

place to live, with a population of about 750 and

someofNewMexico'sbestschools.

tersofFresnalCreek.HighRollsisasmallcommunityhalfwayinbothdistance

andelevationbetweenAlamogordoandCloudcroft.MountainPark,another

smallcommunity,sharesapostof&icewithHighRolls.
