How Greybull Got It's Name The Greybull River was named after an albino buffalo bull that roamed this valley. He was said to have led a charmed life and was, as are all white buffaloes, sacred to the Native Americans who livedin the Big Horn Basin. Even the most skilled of white hunters was unable to kill the huge "grey" bull. According to the legend, the old white bison died of old age.

T he town of Greybull was established in 1906 by Burlington Railroad who named it after the river. Plentiful water and coal forthe steam engines made the area essential to the growth of the railroad. With the discovery of gas and oil Greybull quickly grew into a thriving city, with jobs for everyone. But, when the refinery closed in the I 940's, Greybull settled into a quiet town. Today, twobentonite plants, the railroad and farming as well as ranching became the sources of income for the roughly 1850 people livingin town.

We'd love to hear about your stay! Like Us on Facebook and we'd love your feedback on Trip Advisor, KOA or

other social media platforms.

WARNING Every night at 9 o'clock you will hear a siren in town.

Don't worry, it's an old curfew. The siren is also used by the town's volunteer fire department. Since the average age of our fire fighters is 78, the town tests their hearing every night at 9 PM exactly.

If they can hear the siren they can stay, otherwise ...

SIGHTSEEING OPPORTUNITIES!

Consider an Epic Drive through the Big Horn Mountains on the 14/14A "Loop"

WY O MIN G

S H E

THE LOOP

The Loop covers apprx 150 miles over and across the Big Horns. Our directions take you from west to east, but you can travel it in either

direction, completing the whole loop or only a part. Heading W out of town, take 310 N to Lovell. Stop at the Mustang Center for information on the wild horses, then take 37 N to Devils's Canyon Overlook. Backtrack to 14A and head up the mountain towards Burgess Junction (30 miles). From there, take 14 back to Greybull, stopping at Shell Falls and the Dinosaur Track Site before

returning home.

START THE LOOP: Take 14 W to 31 ON towards Lovell. T hen turn onto 14A. Wild Horses - At the Mustang Center- get information on the wild herds and their locations. Take a detour onto 37 N & arrive at the Big Horn Canyon Recreation Area - Home to the 3rd largest canyon in the US and offering scenic overlooks, boat tours and hiking trails. Make your way back to 14 A and continue up the mountain towards Burgess Junction. At Forest Road 12 - take the nice gravel road up to the Ranger's Station at Medicine Wheel - Located at 9642 feet, this Native American religious site is more than 800 years old and is still in use today by many Native Americans. Standing in the clouds, with the winds rushing by, you can understand why this site is considered sacred. Hiking the 1.5 miles from the Ranger's Station to the Wheel can be strenuous, but you will be rewarded with amazing views of the Basin and the mountains. (If you are unable to make the hike, the Rangers can provide access). [Note: It can be cold even in summer, so bring a jacket]. Continuing on 14A you come to Bear Lodge Resort, at Burgess Junction where you can rest and grab a bite to eat before heading back down the mountains. Take 14 towards Greybull, watching for Moose and Elk along the way. As you come down the mountain, you' ll come to Shell Falls, where more than 3,600 gallons of water per second flow down from the mountains and over these falls! At the Ranger Station you' ll find information and samples of the rocks and fossils located in these beautiful mountains. Continuing down 14 through Shell Canyon apprx 4.8 miles from the falls you come to Red Gulch Rd on your left, which is a decent dirt road that will take you to the Red Gultch Dinosaur Track Site - Here you can

walk with the dinosaurs of the Middle Jurassic age, whose tracks have been preser ved in limestone for more than 167 million years. Hunt for Devil's toenails in the walls and ground (i.e.fossilized marine life). Make your way back to the Greybull KOA for a dip in the pool to CLOSE THE LOOP!

OTHER SIGHT SEEING OPPORTUNI T IES To the South:

MEDICINE LODGE -Take I 6E/US-20 E to WY-31 E (40 miles) to see the ancient Native American petroglyphs and pictographs that adorn the walls of this site, which has been inhabited for more than 8300 years. THERMOPOLIS -Take I 6E/US-20 E from Greybull (70 miles) to the WY Dinosaur Center and even go on a dinosaur dig!! Don't forget to stop by the bath house for a nice dip in the hot springs pool! WIND RIVER CANYON Take US-20 E a few more miles from T hermopolis and you enter the Wind River Canyon. It will take your breath away and might even have you asking "Is this river flowing uphill?"

To the West: CODY (53 miles W) offers a nightly summer rodeo, shops and the Buffalo Bill Museum, among other attractions. HEART MOUNTAIN - 14 miles E of Cody on Road 19, you'll find the WWII Japanese internment camp & museum. BEARTOOTH HWY - Feeling adventurous? Climbing to an astounding I 0,947, you'll likely see Moose, Bears and other wildlife while admiring the amazing views! From Cody go N on WY 120 for 17 miles to the Chief Joeph Scenic Hwy (WY 296), then 47 miles to the intersection with Beartooth Hwy (US Hwy 212), where you'll go right to Red Lodge, MT, or go left

to Cooke City MT and the NE entrance to YELLOWSTONE, where you can circle back to Greybull.
