Amoako-Gyampah, Akwasi Kwarteng (DLitt et Phil) Akwasi Kwarteng Amoako-Gyampah was born in 1982. He trained as a teacher at Wesley College, Kumasi, Ghana. He completed his BA Honours degree at the University of Ghana. His UJ MA in Historical Studies was awarded with distinction. Akwasi registered for his PhD in July 2016 and is a recipient of a UJ Global Excellence and Stature Scholarship. He has authored eight peer-reviewed articles in leading international journals since completing his MA. The most recent, from his PhD, appeared in the Nordic Journal of African Studies. Akwasi is a lecturer in the Department of History Education, University of Education, Winneba, Ghana. Akwasi’s thesis is the first-ever history of public health and sanitation on the Gold Coast. Before the 19th century, European narratives represented the Gold Coast of Africa as unsanitary and detrimental to health. Following colonisation, the British devoted considerable attention towards managing sanitation and public hygiene. These efforts were intended to reorder public spaces and recast the habits and attitudes of the African population and manipulate their desires towards Euro-Western conceptions of appropriate sanitary and hygienic practices. Despite this regulatory framework colonial attitudes towards sanitation and public hygiene remained lackadaisical and under-funded. If therefore, through the management of sanitation and public hygiene, the colonial administration sought to modernise the Gold Coast, that modernity was a fractured one. Through his examination of how the management of sanitation allowed the performance of a racially-driven European cultural hegemony, Akwasi links his work to broader historical debates about the operation of colonialism. His work also links with broader and contemporary interest in public health in Africa, showing how colonisation was not only enacted through coercion but through sanitary policing of the everyday. Supervisor: Prof N Erlank

Jacqueline has taught Classical Culture and Latin part time at the University of Johannesburg for a number of years, while working full time for FNB, where she is now the Innovators Content Manger. During that time, she embarked on a PhD in Latin with UJ. Jacqueline has conducted a study of Ovid’s treatment of myth in his Ars Amatoria (The Art of Love). First, he teaches the young male lover the where and the how of winning over and keeping a desired mistress, followed by contextualised advice for the female audience. Ovid retells nine Greco-Roman myths at length and uses them to critique, maintain or restructure male-female amorous relationships within Roman patriarchal society. Ovid and his audience were clearly disenchanted with the traditional system of arranged marriages, and the laws instituted by Emperor Augustus to maintain the social fabric of the ruling classes in the Roman Empire. To promote his ideas of mutual choice and pleasure in male-female relations, Ovid created a new genre of eroto-didactic poetry, containing elements of epic as well as Roman love elegy. Ovid’s mythical examples charter a brave new basis for successful liaisons, formed and maintained with skill, and based on love and fulfilment. Hassan, Monday Zitta (DLitt et Phil) Born on 30th of June 1970 in Plateau State, Nigeria, Monday Hassan Zitta began his academic pursuits at Government Secondary School Dengi, Nigeria, where he obtained his General Certificate of Education (GCE) in 1985. He gained his Bachelor of Arts degree in History/Political Science (combined Honours) in 1994. Hassan was awarded a Master of Science degree in International Relations and Strategic Studies by the University of Jos, Nigeria, in 2008. Mr. Hassan began his doctoral studies at the University of Johannesburg in January 2015. Hassan’s study explores how Boko Haram, which began in Borno State in the north-eastern region of Nigeria in 2002, later diffused in the Lake Chad region. It finds that this diffusion is a conditional process based on the existing opportunities in the neighbouring states of Cameroon, Chad and Niger and the willingness of the group to exploit the opportunities in exporting its ideology and insurgency practice in the region. Adopting a qualitative approach, based on in-depth interviews and content analysis of key literature, the study also finds that years of neglect and marginalisation, the spread of the Kanuri ethno/religious group in the region, porous borders, the availability of Boko Haram sanctuaries in neighbouring states, and the slow response by the regional governments in combating the insurgency, provided Boko Haram with the opportunities to exploit, and willingness to diffuse, its ideology and insurgency practice in the Lake Chad region. Leibrandt-Loxton, Natalie Wilna Esmeralda (DLitt et Phil) Natalie Leibrandt-Loxton was raised in the Boland town of Lanquedoc and completed her high school education at the Paarl Girls High School. She is currently employed as a parliamentary researcher where she provides research and advisory support to Members of Parliament representing South Africa internationally through bilateral and multilateral parliamentary diplomacy. She holds BA PPE and BAHons (Political Science) degrees from the University of Stellenbosch, and a Master’s degree in Political Science from the University of the Western Cape. Natalie enrolled for the DLitt et Phil programme under the SARChi Chair: African Diplomacy and Foreign Policy at the University of Johannesburg in February 2016. Natalie Leibrandt’s research assessed developments in South Africa’s parliamentary diplomacy and its use as a soft power tool to determine its significance for the state’s capacity in international relations. Natalie’s research findings indicate a gap between policy and practice in South Africa’s diplomatic methods, where the legislature’s international relations as ‘parliamentary diplomacy’ and a tool of soft power is not discussed. This has resulted in limited strategic soft power successes for the state due to insufficient planning for this particular role. The findings further provide insights on how Parliament as a state actor can contribute to South Africa’s soft power potential, thus indicating scope to build a more strategic approach to parliamentary diplomacy in the state’s overall diplomatic practice. The examiners were of the view that this candidate has produced a study that lays the foundation for future research within the South African and broader African contexts, in terms of how both practitioners and scholars view parliamentary diplomacy and the scope of its application in theory and practice. Matsilele, Trust (DLitt et Phil) Trust Matsilele was born and raised in Masvingo, Zimbabwe, where he did his early education. He completed his Diploma in Journalism in Harare before moving to South Africa where he read for a BA Honours (Journalism and Media studies) at Wits and a Masters in Journalism at Stellenbosch. Matsilele has worked as a senior journalist for, CNBC Africa, Forbes Africa magazine, Radio VOP and The Zimbabwean newspaper. He has also worked in the political and democracy space in Zimbabwe, Malawi, Senegal and South Africa. Currently, he lectures specialised reporting courses and supervises post-graduate students at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology. Trust Matsilele’s study investigated the born-digital phenomenon of “social media dissidence” in Zimbabwe during the period 2013 to 2016, when a variety of disruptive acts by individuals and groups provoked panicked responses from the State. Deploying a reconfigured theorising of the public sphere and of subalternity, the study found that social media dissidence is always in the process of becoming, marked by constant flux, metamorphosis, and peaks and troughs – thus requiring novel means of taxonomy. While the collocation of social media and dissidence invariably causes panic for those in power, dissidents exist on a spectrum of patriots and enemies of the state. The study established that there are many levels of “social media dissidence” and many types of “social media dissidents”, existing in constant tension and exchange with each other. The ultimate contribution of the study was to unfix the notion of dissidence from rigid normativity, and thus draw our attention to the possibilities and limitations of deploying social media as a protest tool. Mshweshwe, Linda (DLitt et Phil) Linda Mshweshwe obtained her Master’s degree from Leeds Metropolitan University (United Kingdom) before registering for a doctorate in Sociology at the University of Johannesburg. Linda has lectured at the University of South Africa (UNISA) in the Department of Sociology from 2015 - 2019, where she also served on several departmental and college committees. She is a member of the South African Sociological Association (SASA), and has presented papers in several conferences. Her research interests lie within the fields of social justice, gender, and gender-based violence. Linda Mshweshwe’s thesis explores the views and experiences of domestic violence survivors living in the rural areas of the Eastern Cape. She also examines the thinking of service-providers with regard to the kinds of support they offer for survivors of domestic violence in the rural areas. Through in-depth qualitative interviews her research built substantive insight into strategies that rural women use in counteracting complex cultural practices and engaging with ideological frameworks that shape and constrain their defensive actions. The study unmasks the interplay of patriarchy with structural factors that frame the choices women make in seeking support or complying with decisions on whether to stay with, or escape from, violence in the home. Linda’s thesis exposes empirically, and assesses theoretically, the overwhelming influence of time-honoured cultural and religious norms that keep women vulnerable, while normalising domestic violence, particularly in customary marriages. Ncube, Mpumelelo Ennocent (DLitt et Phil) Mpumelelo Ncube obtained his BA Social Work and M.A Social Development from the University of Witwatersrand. His career started at the Gauteng Department of Social Department as a statutory social worker. He further moved to the NGO and Private sectors before joining academia where he is a lecturer of Social Work Supervision and Community Development at the University of Johannesburg. He has published articles on reputable international journals. He has saved in a number of national task teams in the Department of Social Development developing a framework for social work supervision and curriculum for postgraduate courses on supervision for social service practitioners. In this study, Mpumelelo Ncube ascertains the extent to which social work supervision has been informed by the social development approach. He examined the type of supervision that agencies in the country were using. He then sought to develop a model of social work supervision based on the social development approach. This study’s original contribution hinges on the bringing together of three intellectual disciplines and practice areas, namely, social work practice, social work supervision, social work education and social development. The candidate demonstrated intellectual dexterity by weaving them into a single tapestry. This is the kind of rigour and depth that a doctoral study required and the candidate was able to exhibit this. The other most significant issue here is that the study was able to arrive at a model for practice. Supervisor: Prof N Noyoo

Reijer, Josien Marthe (DLitt et Phil) Josien Reijer’s academic career commenced with a BSc (Human Geography) degree in 2010 followed by an MSc(Res) (International Development Studies) degree in 2013 from the University of Amsterdam. She did both her Bachelor’s and Master’s dissertations in the field of HIV in Zambia. In 2014, she enrolled for her doctoral degree at the Department of Sociology. Her work combines the fields of sociology, health studies, geography and development studies. She has now joined the Department of Philosophy at the University of Johannesburg as a post-doctoral research fellow. Josien Reijer’s thesis provides a comprehensive understanding of the well-being of People Living with HIV (PLHIV) on Antiretroviral therapy (ART), and their households, in Lusaka, Zambia. A mixed-methods design was employed to study the broader impacts of ART on the well-being of PLHIV. While the study demonstrated the potential mitigating impact of ART, this was more evident when ART was initiated during the early stages of disease progression. Acceptance and a positive outlook on life paired with the right environment and policies, offer much hope for the realisation of the positive impact of ART. The study showed that social networks have an ongoing role in the well-being of PLHIV and can lead to earlier testing, earlier initiation of ART, and in the long-term better adherence and continuation of ART. However, the promise of ART that PLHIV will be able to continue with their normal lives, will only be achieved if accompanied by adherence counselling and involvement in support groups.
