RESPONSORIAL PSALM:

“The vineyard of the Lord is the house of Israel.“

A READING FROM THE BOOK OF THE PROPHET ISAIAH ISAIAH 5:1-7

Let me now sing of my friend, my friend's song concerning his vineyard. My friend had a vineyard on a fertile hillside; he spaded it, cleared it of stones, and planted the choicest vines; within it he built a watchtower, and hewed out a wine press. Then he looked for the crop of grapes, but what it yielded was wild grapes.

Now, inhabitants of Jerusalem and people of Judah, judge between me and my vineyard: What more was there to do for my vineyard that I had not done? Why, when I looked for the crop of grapes, did it bring forth wild grapes? Now, I will let you know what I mean to do with my vineyard: take away its hedge, give it to grazing, break through its wall, let it be trampled! Yes, I will make it a ruin: it shall not be pruned or hoed, but overgrown with thorns and briers; I will command the clouds not to send rain upon it. The vineyard of the LORD of hosts is the house of Israel, and the people of Judah are his cherished plant; he looked for judgment, but see, bloodshed! for justice, but hark, the outcry! The word of the Lord. THANKS BE TO GOD.

A READING FROM THE HOLY GOSPEL ACCORDING TO MATTHEW MATTHEW 21:33-43

Jesus said to the chief priests and the elders of the people: "Hear another parable. There was a landowner who planted a vineyard, put a hedge around it, dug a wine press in it, and built a tower. Then he leased it to tenants and went on a journey. When vintage time drew near, he sent his servants to the tenants to obtain his produce. But the tenants seized the servants and one they beat, another they killed, and a third they stoned. Again he sent other servants, more numerous than the first ones, but they treated them in the same way. Finally, he sent his son to them, thinking, 'They will respect my son.' But when the tenants saw the son, they said to one another, 'This is the heir. Come, let us kill him and acquire his inheritance.’ They seized him, threw him out of the vineyard, and killed him. What will the owner of the vineyard do to those tenants when he comes?" They answered him, "He will put those wretched men to a wretched death and lease his vineyard to other tenants who will give him the produce at the proper times." Jesus said to them, "Did you never read in the Scriptures: The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; by the Lord has this been done, and it is wonderful in our eyes? Therefore, I say to you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people that will produce its fruit."

The Gospel of the Lord. PRAISE TO YOU, LORD JESUS CHRIST.

1. Lord of all hopefulness, Lord of all joy, Whose trust ever childlike, No cares could destroy: Be there at our waking, and give us, we pray, Your bliss in our hearts, Lord, at the break of the day.

2. Lord of all eagerness, Lord of all faith, Whose strong hands were skilled at the plane and the lathe: Be there at our labors, and give us, we pray, Your strength in our hearts, Lord, at the noon of the day.

#300 ENTRANCE: Lord of All Hopefulness

A READING FROM THE LETTER OF ST. PAUL TO THE PHILIPPIANS PHILIPPIANS 4:6-9

Brothers and sisters: Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God. Then the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.

Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is gracious, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. Keep on doing what you have learned and received and heard and seen in me. Then the God of peace will be with you.

The word of the Lord. THANKS BE TO GOD.

Promoting Peaceful Relationships at Home Webinar: October 14, 2020, 1:00-2:30 pm Together with the USCCB, Catholics for Family and Peace will be conducting a free webinar on how to promote peace in the home - a relevant topic for these times. (Hyper)Link to register: eventbrite.com/e/promoting-peaceful-relationships-at-home-tickets-119489717963

REFRAIN: We hold the death of the Lord deep in our hearts. Living, now we remain with Jesus, the Christ.

1. Once we were people afraid, lost in the night. Then by your cross we were saved; Dead became living, life from your giving. [Refrain]

2. Something which we have known, something we’ve touched, What we have seen with our eyes: This we have heard, life giving Word. [Refrain]

3. He chose to give of himself; became our bread, Broken that we might live; Love beyond love, pain for our pain. [Refrain]

#239 OFFERTORY: Now We Remain

REFRAIN: Set your heart on the higher gifts, on the things that come from your Maker in heaven. These three gifts are all that remain: Faith, Hope and Love, and the greatest is Love.

1. If I speak with the tongues of the living, and of angels, But speak without love, I am only brass without song, an empty noise on the wind. [Refrain]

2. And if I understand ev’ry myst’ry, having wisdom, but think without love, Had I faith to scatter the hills, I am nothing at all. [Refrain]

3. And if I should renounce all my riches, feed the hungry, give over my life; Without love my profit is loss, my caring finds no reward. [Refrain]

#307 COMMUNION: Set Your Heart on the Higher Gifts

Holy Michael the Archangel, Defend us in battle...Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do you,

O Prince of the heavenly host, by the divine power thrust into hell Satan, and all the other evil spirits who wander through the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

1. The Church’s one foundation Is Jesus Christ her Lord; She is his new creation By water and the Word. From heav’n he came and sought her To be his holy bride; With his own blood he bought her, And for her life he died.

2. Elect from ev’ry nation, Yet one o’er all the earth, Her charter of salvation, One Lord, one faith, one birth; One holy name she blesses, Partakes one holy food, And to one hope she presses, With ev’ry grace endued.

#244 RECESSIONAL: The Church’s One Foundation

1. Hail, holy Queen enthroned above, O Maria. Hail, Queen of mercy and of love, O Maria. Triumph, all ye cherubim; Sing with us, ye seraphim. Heav’n and earth resound the hymn: Salve, salve, salve, Regina!

2. The cause of joy to us below, O Maria. The spring through which all graces flow, O Maria. Angels, all your praises bring; Earth and heaven, with us sing; All creation echoing: Salve, salve, salve, Regina!

#206 MEDITATION: Hail, Holy Queen Enthroned Above

Are there Guardian Angels?

On October 2nd the Catholic Church celebrated the feast of the Guardian Angels. As small children our catechism teachers us to show a picture with an angel leading a baby on a bridge, which was a little damaged, and further we were taught that God has given each one of us an angel to guard and lead us through the course of our life. But as we grew up, we may have failed to understand the existence and importance of guardian angels for our life. Are there really angels to guard each one of us?

They are really present: The Catholic Church did not concoct anything about the existence of the Guardian Angels. There are many references in the Bible to show that God has entrusted us to the watchful care of the angels. For example,

Psalm 34:6-7 says, “This poor man cried, and the Lord heard him, and saved him out of all his troubles. The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him and delivers them.”

Psalm 35:4-6 states, “Let them be put to shame and dishonor who seek after my life! Let them be turned back and confounded who devise evil against me! Let them be like chaff before the wind, with the angel of the Lord driving them on! Let their way be dark and slippery, with the angel of the Lord pursuing them!” (Ref. also Book Job33:23-26).

Matthew 18:10, “See that you do not despise one of these little ones; for I tell you that in heaven their angels always behold the face of my Father who is in heaven.” (Ref. Acts 12:12-15).

Based on these and other Biblical references, the Catholic Church teaches that the Guardian Angels are given to us by God to help us: “The Existence of the spiritual, non-corporeal beings that the Sacred Scripture usually calls ‘angels’ is a truth of faith. The witness of Scripture is as clear as the unanimity of Tradition” (Catechism of the Catholic Church 328).

Angels lead us to heaven: Our Guardian angels protect us from evil and assist us to choose good. The Letter to the Hebrews states: “Are they not all ministering spirits sent forth to serve, for the sake of those who are to obtain salvation?” (Hebrews 1:14).

Let us believe that God’s care is fulfilled by the angels and so let our Guardian Angel lead us deeper in the fullness of God’s mercy, love and goodness. Here is a short prayer to our Guardian Angel: “Angel of God, my guardian dear, to whom God’s love commits me here. Ever this day, be at my side, to light and guard, to rule and guide.” Amen.

Fr. Arul Joseph V.
