Alongside tank container transport in the UK, Suttons operates a large nationwide Road Tanker fleet serving the fuels, gases, chemicals and food sectors. Supporting our road tanker and intermodal activities in the UK, we have a chemical drumming and packaging facility. This state of the art installation provides a fully automated process removing any manual handling ensuring the highest safety standards and minimising the risk of product contamination.

The drumming facility is based within our 43,000 sq m warehousing site, close to the motorway network in the North West of England. The multipurpose site provides high quality modern storage and warehouse units.

Suttons ArabiaSuttons Arabia is a joint venture between Suttons International and bulk chemical storage operator Arabian Chemical Terminals (ACT).

Tank Container FleetThe majority of our tank containers are manufactured from stainless steel making them suitable for the carriage of food grade products, non-hazardous chemicals and a large majority of hazardous products. Our fleet includes lined, heated, refrigerated and baffled containers ranging in capacity from 16,000ltr to 35,000ltr.

Baffle TanksWe own and operate one of the largest baffle tank fleets in the world. We have more than 1,500 baffle tanks ranging in capacity from 20,000ltr to 35,000ltr.

Within our baffle tank fleet we have containers fitted with steam heating, warm water heating, thermostatically controlled electrical heating systems and also cooling systems.

Lined TanksOur lined tank containers are designed for the transport of both high purity and highly corrosive products.

These tank containers offer additional safety features such as product level detection devices and overfill protection systems. GPS tracking is also offered for real time tracking of tank containers while in transit.

The tanks are available with a variety of linings including PTFE, phenolic resin and rubber, together with various valve configurations to suit specific loading and discharge requirements.

Heated Tank ContainersSuttons heated tank containers are fitted with either electrical or steam heating systems. We have developed in-house electrical heating systems designed for the safe carriage of heat sensitive products whilst maintaining product quality.

Refrigerated Tank ContainersOur fleet of refrigerated tanks feature cooling systems to ensure product stability of temperature sensitive loads. Tanks are fitted with temperature data loggers and track and trace equipment to ensure the product is monitored at all times.

Gas TanksOur gas tank container fleet includes zinc lined tanks for the transportation of non-refrigerant gases and stainless steel tank containers for pharmaceutical grade propellants.

In addition to our own fleet of gas tank containers, we have operated a fleet management service for a global gas manufacturer for more than 15 years. Our Road Tanker FleetSuttons has a fleet of more than 300 tractor units and over 470 road tankers and trailers in operation. The fleet works from all of Suttons 38 operating locations across the UK and comprises a number of different specifications configured to suit the demands of the various sectors in which we operate.

Our tanker fleet is made up of gas, petroleum, bulk food tanks, general purpose chemical tanks and skeletal trailers. As with our tractor units, our tanker fleet comprises many different specifications so that we can offer customers flexible transport solutions. Specifications include variations in tank linings, heating systems, compartment configuration, manlid design and discharge methods to suit the products we transport.

Our tractors are all equipped with modern telematic systems used to provide key safety and service data and help us manage our carbon footprint by improving fuel efficiency.

Suttons reputation for safe operation is second to none and in keeping with our company values our equipment has the very latest features to protect our drivers, our customers and the general public. Our trucks, trailers and tankers are fitted with electronic braking systems (EBS), stability control and roll prevention systems. To ensure safety while loading and unloading, tankers are fitted with ground operated load and unload valves which eliminate the need for our drivers to go on top of the vehicle.

To safeguard whilst unloading hazardous materials, our fleet also includes a number of dry lines such as TODO and Avery Hardoll connectors to remove the risk of product spillage or contamination.

Stock is always dynamic so stock management requires constant and careful evaluation of external and internal factors and control through planning and review. Suttons inventory planners will continuously monitor, control and review stock levels and external factors to ensure optimum stock levels at all times.

EngineeringOur road tankers and trailers are maintained in partnership with third party independent workshops, plus our own internal workshops where we retain critical specialist capability. Maintenance planning, tank testing, MOT/ADR and all aspects of compliance work carried out by third parties are managed through our Central Maintenance Control function based at our head office.

This centralised management has resulted in strong partnerships with our third party suppliers built up over a number of years creating improvements in our compliance and many other areas such as quality of repairs, lower downtime, reduced cost and a first time MOT pass rate of over 97% for external workshops and over 98% in house.

Bulk ChemicalsSuttons has provided chemical road transport services for more than 60 years. We have the qualified personnel and equipment to transport both hazardous and non-hazardous chemicals.

We provide a wide range of logistics services to blue chip chemicals manufacturers. These services include distribution, VMI and fleet management for a diverse range of services across the spectrum of hazard classifications.

Whilst we operate an extensive fleet of flexible ‘multi-product’ equipment, we also retain specialist assets, knowledge and skills to handle high consequence cargos such as liquid chlorine, anhydrous ammonia and anhydrous hydrogen fluoride.

Our nationally based multi-product general purpose tanker fleet is specified to be flexible, allowing us to respond quickly and cost effectively to our customer’s requirements, which include corrosives, toxics, flammables, and environmentally hazardous products. Our baffled tanker fleet can handle a wide range of product densities requiring pump, compressor or gravity discharge.

Bulk FuelsOur national fuels fleet provides distribution services for a number of large traders and oil majors. Fleet specifications are designed to meet the exact needs of individual customers but typically include a range of multi-compartment rigid, urban artic and high capacity artics providing the lowest compatible cost to serve.

Our core fuels fleet is supported by our Safe Loading Pass (SLP) compliant shared user chemicals fleet, which ensures core fleet reliability and allows Suttons to provide guaranteed, high quality additional capacity during peak periods.

Our high capacity stainless steel SLP compliant tankers are in high demand for bio-ethanol deliveries. As a consequence Suttons has invested in additional fleet capacity being brought on-line in 2013.

Pro-Active Safety ManagementWe have introduced a number of new initiatives to promote and maintain a fresh approach to safety within the business.

Every single incident, no matter how small, is recorded on the Airsweb system and the incident is not closed until a satisfactory resolution has been implemented and signed off by a Senior Manager.

• Behaviouralsafetyaudits-BehaviouralSafety Audits (BSAs), are conducted by our field managers where they spend time managing safety in our employees’ own environment.

• ABSAisconductedonsafetycriticalactivities. These are unannounced and provide us with the opportunity to see how a task is completed day-to-day without supervision. This approach helps to develop a culture where safe behaviour is instinctive.

Emergency ResponseAlthough it is rarely used, Suttons has an in-house Emergency Response (E.R.) capability which is ready to respond to any incident at any time. Our dedicated E.R. teams include trained Suttons personnel and response vehicles fully equipped to react to any situation.

We work closely with the Emergency Services and the Environment Agency and conduct regular refresher training with all of our E.R. staff. This capability is supported by 3rd party E.R. partners.

Driver TrainingSuttons invests substantial funds and resources in safety and we have a team of dedicated and accredited driver trainers within the UK Road Tanker division whose primary role is to ensure the professionalism and operational integrity of our drivers.

In 2000, Suttons established a Driver Training Centre in the UK to provide new drivers with Safety Induction Training. In addition, all drivers attend an annual classroom refresher course and are given skid pan training to prepare them for any emergency situations that they may encounter.

All driver training is logged in a centralised system which automatically prompts when refresher training is required. This ensures every driver is up to date with the latest training and information.

Tank Container TrainingIn 2008 Suttons launched the first interactive training tank container. Built at our depot in Cheshire, UK, it is a full size tank container which has been adapted so that people can walk inside and safely climb on top to see the tools and equipment used on a modern day tank container.

Our training tank container has been a huge success, not only with our own people but also with our customers. The tank container has now become so popular that we have built a second tank for our Asia operations and both are in constant use across both continents being used by our teams, our customers and our suppliers.

The training tank is another imaginative training and safety initiative implemented by Suttons as we continue to provide safe, dependable and cost effective supply chain services.

DrummingSuttons can implement a bespoke drumming service for both hazardous and non-hazardous products as a stand-alone service or part of a complete end to end logistics solution. State of the art automated equipment provides a safe, high quality and efficient packing service specialising in the packaging of products in drums and IBC’s of all sizes.

We can build a packaging solution to specifically meet our customers’ requirements. This can include installation and management of equipment through to the provision of packing, warehousing and distribution facilities. Our designers will identify the appropriate equipment and safety features and work with you to ensure a smooth and reliable packaging process.

Health, Safety and Environmental FocusOperator and environment safety is ensured by bespoke safety features including extraction systems, scrubbing equipment and emergency response procedures. Safeguards are also programmed in all automated equipment.

Safety is our first priority when designing a new packaging facility and we are continuously reviewing and benchmarking our equipment to ensure we can provide the latest and most effective technologies available.

Product Quality and Transfer MethodsNumerous methods can be used to ensure products are transferred safely and without risk of contamination, including dedicated fixed or flexible pumps and pipework.

Product quality is maintained through dedicated handling equipment safeguarding the product from degradation or contamination. Suttons can also introduce filtration to the discharge process adding stabilisers or injecting drums to improve safety and prolong product shelf life.

Suttons Added ValueWe can provide all necessary transport documentation, provision of dispatch services including pallets, labels, securing straps and ancillaries.

Quality assurance is validated using on-site analytical equipment producing appropriate Certificate of Analysis.

We can supply packages in accordance with customer requirements and to ensure compliance with relevant legislation.

Suttons ability to integrate our packaging service with our end to end logistics capabilities enables Suttons and our customers to have more control and visibility of their supply chain, simplifying processes and generating efficiencies through a single supplier.

WarehousingWe have the knowledge, experience and equipment to provide a complete warehousing management solution to our customers anywhere in the world, be it a standalone service or part of an end to end logistics solution.

In the UK, Suttons owns and operates Linkway Distribution Park. The multipurpose site has over 43,000 sq m of warehousing, which has been subdivided to provide high quality modern storage and warehouse units.

Units range in size from small lock-ups to substantial high bay warehouses enclosed within a secure complex staffed with security personnel 24/7, 365 days a year.
