About Me
• Name: Karen Lee• Years at IMS: 28• Have taught: Chorus, Language Arts, Challenge, Study Hall, Study
Skills, PAWS, and PWR, and am Dean of Students • Education: Pacific Lutheran University, Bachelor of Arts (Music and
English); University of Washington, Master’s degree• Parent to Erica, a recent graduate from Issaquah High School• Hobbies: Spending time with family and friends, reading, writing,
singing, playing the piano, photography, scrapbooking, and I enjoy vacations with sun and water!
Goals and Curriculum
• Our class will work together this trimester to learn and practice several important study tools, utilizing Middle School Study Skills Guidebooks from Mangrum-Strichart Learning Resources and related supplemental materials. Students will track their progress with on-line Pre & Post Study Skills assessments, as well as self-assessments on study-related topics.
CURRICULUM, continued
Curriculum includes: learning styles, listening skills, note taking, organization, goal-setting, finding main ideas, building vocabulary, memorization strategies, time management & ways to avoid procrastination, test-taking tips, and building confidence as successful students.
Materials
Students bring: a pen and/or a pencil,
Panther Planner,Study Skills Guidebook,hand-outs from class, & homework assignments

Grading
• Attitude and Participation (10 pts. per week)- Involvement in class activities is positive
and helps with learning (includes teacher feedback and student self-reflection)
- Students are on-task while learning & practicing study skills assignments and when given opportunities to work on homework (I will also monitor progress in students’ other classes to help).

• IMPORTANT NOTE: Though this is a one-trimester class, in my role as Dean of Students, I will follow-up with our Study Skills students individually during Tri II & III to see how they’re doing in their classes and to continue my support.
