Welcome to St Stephen’s BELVEDERE

Auden used to say that he had a guardian angel who told him what to read next. I think I have one too, though mine is less attentive than Auden’s was. She has one habit I rather like: she tells me when not

to read something. Yes, you’ll want to read that, she says, peering through the opening she makes in her hair which she holds over her right eye, but wait. Wait a bit. Not now, but later. One book she told me to delay the reading of is Robin Sloan’s Sourdough, which she just gave permission to read and I am, um, devouring. Time is a priceless currency, one right up there with love and pain which are, as it happens, the same thing. Before long you’re going to spend it all. Wondering how to decide what to read? Here’s a simple but effective heuristic to reduce the choices significantly. Ask yourself one question: Does this writer make bank when we hate one another? And if the answer is yes, don’t read that writer. Welcome to St Stephen’s.

At the Procession

Hymn 530 Spread, O spread, thou mighty word GOTT SEI DANK

Spread, O spread, thou mighty word, spread the kingdom of the Lord, that to earth’s remotest bound allmay heed the joyful sound;

Word of how the Father’s will made the world, and keeps it, still; how his only Son he gave, earth from sin and death to save;

Word of how the Savior’s love earth's sore burden doth remove; how forever, in its need, through his death the world is freed;

Word of how the Spirit came bringing peace in Jesus’ name; how his never failing love guides us on to heaven above.

Word of life, most pure and strong, word for which the nations long, spread abroad, until from night all the world awakes to light.

— Jonathan Friedrich Bahnmeister (1774 – 1841); tr. Arthur William Farlander (1898 – 1952)

The Collect for the Fourth Sunday after Trinity

Celebrant The Lord be with you.People And also with you.Celebrant Let us pray.

Almighty God, you have built your Church upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief cornerstone: Grant us so to be joined together in unity of spirit

by their teaching, that we may be made a holy temple acceptable to you; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

The people sit.

The First Reading 2. Samuel 1. 1, 17 – 27

After the death of Saul, when David had returned from defeating the Amalekites, David remained two days in Ziklag.

David intoned this lamentation over Saul and his son Jonathan. (He ordered that The Song of the Bow be taught to the people of Judah; it is written in the Book of Jashar.) He said:

Your glory, O Israel, lies slain upon your high places! How the mighty have fallen!

Tell it not in Gath, proclaim it not in the streets of Ashkelon; or the daughters of the Philistines will rejoice, the daughters of the uncircumcised will exult.

You mountains of Gilboa, let there be no dew or rain upon you, nor bounteous fields!

For there the shield of the mighty was defiled, the shield of Saul, anointed with oil no more.

Page 7: Welcome to St Stephen BELVEDERE A

From the blood of the slain, from the fat of the mighty, the bow of Jonathan did not turn back, nor the sword of Saul return empty.

Saul and Jonathan, beloved and lovely! In life and in death they were not divided; they were swifter than eagles, they were stronger than lions.

O daughters of Israel, weep over Saul, who clothed you with crimson, in luxury, who put ornaments of gold on your apparel.

How the mighty have fallen in the midst of the battle!

Jonathan lies slain upon your high places.I am distressed for you, my brother Jonathan; greatly beloved were you to me; your love to me was wonderful, passing the love of women.

How the mighty have fallen, and the weapons of war perished!

Psalm 130 De profundis Plainsong

Repeat refrain after the cantor the first time.

Out of the depths have I called to you, O Lord; Lord, hear my voice; * let your ears consider well the voice of my supplication. If you, Lord, were to note what is done amiss, * O Lord, who could stand? — Refrain [r]

For there is forgiveness with you; * therefore you shall be feared.I wait for the Lord; my soul waits for him; * in his word is my hope. — [r]

My soul waits for the Lord, more than watchmen for the morning, * more than watchmen for the morning.O Israel, wait for the Lord, * for with the Lord there is mercy; — [r]

With him there is plenteous redemption, * and he shall redeem Israel from all their sins. — [r]

The Epistle Reading 2 Corinthians 8. 7 – 15

As you excel in everything — in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in utmost eagerness, and in our love for you — so we want you to excel also in this generous undertaking.

I do not say this as a command, but I am testing the genuineness of your love against the earnestness of others. For you know the generous act of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sakes he

Page 9: Welcome to St Stephen BELVEDERE A

became poor, so that by his poverty you might become rich. And in this matter I am giving my advice: it is appropriate for you who began last year not only to do something but even to desire to do something — now finish doing it, so that your eagerness may be matched by completing it according to your means. For if the eagerness is there, the gift is acceptable according to what one has — not according to what one does not have. I do not mean that there should be relief for others and pressure on you, but it is a question of a fair balance between your present abundance and their need, so that their abundance may be for your need, in order that there may be a fair balance. As it is written,

“The one who had much did not have too much, and the one who had little did not have too little.”

Reader The Word of the Lord.People Thanks be to God.

The people stand and remain standing for the Holy Gospel.

The Sequence Alleluia John Karl Hirten (b. 1956)Repeat each phrase after cantor the first time.

The Holy Gospel Mark 5. 21 – 43

Gospeller The XHoly Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark.People Glory to you, Lord Christ.

When Jesus had crossed again in the boat to the other side, a great crowd gathered around him; and he was by the sea. Then one of the leaders of the synagogue named Jairus came and, when he saw him, fell at his feet and begged him repeatedly, “My little daughter is at the point of death. Come and lay your hands on her, so that she may be made well, and live.” So he went with him.

And a large crowd followed him and pressed in on him. Now there was a woman who had been suffering from hemorrhages for twelve years. She had endured much under many physicians, and had spent all that she had; and she was no better, but rather grew worse. She had heard about Jesus, and came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak, for she said, “If I but touch his clothes, I will be made well.” Immediately her hemorrhage stopped; and she felt in her body that she was healed of her disease. Immediately aware that power had gone forth from him, Jesus turned about in the crowd and said, “Who touched my clothes?” And his disciples said to him, “You see the crowd pressing in on you; how can you say, ‘Who touched me?’” He looked all around to see who had done it. But the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came in fear and trembling, fell down before him, and told him the whole truth. He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace, and be healed of your disease.”

While he was still speaking, some people came from the leader’s house to say, “Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the teacher any further?” But overhearing what they said, Jesus said to the leader of the synagogue, “Do not fear, only believe.” He allowed no one to follow him except Peter, James, and John, the brother of James. When they came to the house of the leader of the synagogue, he saw a commotion, people weeping and wailing loudly. When he had entered, he said to them, “Why do you

Page 11: Welcome to St Stephen BELVEDERE A

make a commotion and weep? The child is not dead but sleeping.” And they laughed at him. Then he put them all outside, and took the child’s father and mother and those who were with him, and went in where the child was. He took her by the hand and said to her, “Talitha cum,” which means, “Little girl, get up!” And immediately the girl got up and began to walk about (she was twelve years of age). At this they were overcome with amazement. He strictly ordered them that no one should know this, and told them to give her something to eat.

Gospeller The Gospel of the Lord.People Praise to you, Lord Christ.

The preacher says a prayer and then bids the people to sit.

The Homily Christine Trainor

After the homily, the people stand to say the Nicene Creed.

The Nicene Creed Standing

We believe in one God,the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth,of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God,eternally begotten of the Father,God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God,begotten, not made,of one Being with the Father.

Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation

he came down from heaven:by the power of the Holy Spirit

he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;he suffered death and was buried.

On the third day he rose againin accordance with the Scriptures;

he ascended into heavenand is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son.With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.We look for the Xresurrection of the dead,

and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Preface

For by water and the Holy Spirit you have made us a new people in Jesus Christ our Lord, to show forth your glory in all the world.

Page 16: Welcome to St Stephen BELVEDERE A

The people stand or kneel.

The Celebrant continues.

Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself; and, when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all.

He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself, in obedience to your will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world.

On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith:

Celebrant and People

Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.

We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts.

Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom.

Page 17: Welcome to St Stephen BELVEDERE A

All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN.

And now, as our Savior Christ hath taught us, we are bold to say,

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

At the Communion

To our livestream congregation:

How will I receive the Sacrament if not by mouth? By faith. The Church has been through pestilence and passed its wisdom down to us in the Book of Common Prayer. Here’s the rubric [instruction] from the 1689 Prayer Book translated into contemporary Californian: “But if a person, either by reason of extremity of sickness or . . . by any other just impediment, cannot receive the Sacrament of Christ’s Body and Blood: the Clergy shall instruct them that if they repent of their sins, and believe that Jesus Christ has suffered death upon the Cross for them, and shed his Blood for their redemption, earnestly remembering the benefits they have received thereby . . . they eat and drink the Body and Blood of our Savior Christ profitably to their soul’s health, although they do not receive the Sacrament with their mouth.”

Via live stream you will receive what Tradition calls Spiritual Communion. Inclining your hearts, you will eat and drink the Body and Blood of our Savior Jesus Christ to your soul’s health, although you do not receive the Sacrament with your mouth.

People can contact [email protected] if they would like to arrange for communion from the reserve sacrament.

Hymn 411 O bless the Lord, my soul ST THOMAS [WILLIAMS]

O bless the Lord, my soul! His grace to thee proclaim! And all that is within me join to bless his holy Name!

O bless the Lord, my soul! His mercies bear in mind!Forget not all his benefits! The Lord to thee is kind.

He will not always chide; he will with patience wait; his wrath is ever slow to rise and ready to abate.

He pardons all thy sins, prolongs thy feeble breath; he healeth thine infirmities and ransoms thee from deat.

He clothes thee with his love, upholds thee with his truth; and like the eagle he renews the vigor of thy youth.

Then bless his holy Name, whose grace hath made thee whole, whose loving kindness crowns our days: O bless the Lord, my soul!

— James Montgomery (1771 – 1854); paraphrase of Ps. 103. 1 – 5

The Post-Communion Prayer The people stand.

After Communion, the Celebrant says Let us pray.

Almighty and everliving God, we thank you for feeding us with the spiritual food of the most precious Body and Blood of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ; and for assuring us in these holy mysteries that we are living members of the Body of your Son, and heirs of your eternal kingdom. And now, Father, send us out to do the work you have given us to do, to love and serve you as faithful witnesses of Christ our Lord. To him, to you, and to the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory, now and for ever. Amen.

Page 20: Welcome to St Stephen BELVEDERE A

The Benediction The people remain standing and respond Amen at the conclusion.

Celebrant

Go out into the world in peace. Have courage! Hold fast to what is good. Return no one evil for evil. Strengthen the faint-hearted, support the weak, help the suffering. Honor all people. Love and serve the Lord your God, rejoicing in the power of the Holy Spirit. And the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit be with you now and for ever. Amen.

At the Retiring Procession The people remain facing the Altar.

Hymn 518 Christ is made the sure foundation WESTMINSTER ABBEY

Christ is made the sure foundation, Christ the head and corner-stone chosen of the Lord and precious, binding all the Church in one; holy Zion’s help for ever, and her confidence alone.

All that dedicated city, dearly loved of God on high, in exultant jubilaion pours perpetual melody; God the One in Three adoring in glad hymns eternally.

To this temple where we call thee, come, O Lord of Hosts, today; with thy wonted loving kindness, hear thy servants as they pray, and thy fullest benediction shed within its walls alway.

Here vouchsafe to all thy servants what they ask of thee to gain; what they gain from thee, for ever with the blessed to retain, and hereafter in thy glory evermore with thee to reign.

— 7th C. Latin, tr. by John Mason Neale (1818 – 1866) alt.

— Music Notes —As the pandemic slowly wanes, the St Stephen’s Choir will start to make its way back into the weekly Sunday liturgy. Since the choir loft cannot accomodate the whole group with any type of social distancing, we will be trying several different approaches. For now, up to eight choir members who choose to sing with us during this time will be scheduled in advance, and will be stationed in the “footpace” area (behind the altar and under the Christus Rex). They will sing the liturgy while wearing masks and staying in place. Our four section leaders will be upstairs with John Hirten. They will come down and sing the anthem with the group, and then return upstairs. Eventually, as safety protocols loosen, we will welcome the entire group back. Keep your fingers crossed!

Many Richard Farrant was a musician/choirmaster, but he was more well known in his day as a playwright and theatrical producer noted for creating the Blackfriars Theatre that hosted children’s companies. Very little else is known about him. He became a gentleman of the Chapel Royal in the reign of Edward VI, but resigned his post in 1564 on being appointed master of the children of St George’s Chapel, Windsor. His plays, on classical themes, are all lost. In November 1569 he became Master of the Chapel Royal, holding this post concurrently with that at Windsor. Few of Farrant’s compositions survive. The best known are a service, and the anthems Call to remembrance and Hide not thou thy face. There were apparently other John Farrants who were active composers during this period. There are several compositions attributed simply to “Farrant” in early sources, which may be by him or by one of the others.

The text “Christ is made the sure foundation” is a translation of an ancient Latin hymn (Urbs beata) by the scholar and hymn-writer John Mason Neale, first published in 1851, though it has been altered in successive publications. The music is by the great English composer Henry Purcell (1659 – 1695) and is from the last part of a verse anthem called “O God, thou are my God,” and is a setting of the word “Hallelujah.” The “marriage” of the current text and tune was introduced to Americans through the broadcast of the wedding of Princess Margaret to Lord Snowden in 1960.

— PRIDE MONTH —

Pride month and the celebrations of this weekend mark the particular culture, concerns, and activist spirituality of San Francisco and the Bay Area. Pride month arose with the bold resistance of trans women of color after a violent police raid on the Stonewall Inn in June 1969. This year, Pentecost and Pride are finding definition in the racial and human rights reckoning unfolding in our country and around the globe. The Wisdom of God is pouring herself out, driving us to cry for wholeness, knowing that “no one is free until we are all free.”
