In today’s Second Reading from Paul’s Letter to the Corinthians, we come to an interesting section. He is making a plea to the people of Corinth to be generous with their financial resources. He is asking for financial support for the ‘holy ones’ which is the Church in Jerusalem. The Church in Jerusalem is suffering under hardship and St. Paul is taking up a collection. A part of Chapter 8 of II Corinthians which proceeds today’s selection speaks of how the Churches in Macedonia, although limited in their resources, were generous in their support for this collection. Paul does not come right out and ask them for money but starts by ‘buttering them up.’ He speaks about how they have excelled in so many things regarding the faith and now ask them to also excel in generosity, “Now as you excel in every respect, in faith, discourse, knowledge, all earnestness, and in the love we have for you, may you excel in this gracious act also.” St. Paul is using the Boys Town method. He gives five compliments (you excel in faith, discourse, knowledge, earnestness and love) before he challenges them in their past lack of generosity. One piece that is left out of today’s selection is verse 8, “I say this not by way of command, but to test the genuineness of your love by your concern for others.” St. Paul does not want to command the Corinthians to give money to the collection but he does say that their participation is a sign of their love and concern for others. St. Paul’s plea for funds is a familiar one to me as a pastor. I come to you often asking for your support for the work of the parish and the broader church. In the four years I’ve been here we have had many special collections for those affected by natural disasters here in the United States and around the world. We have had a campaign to pay off our renovation debt. Each year we have had the Annual Appeal for the Archdiocese and last year we had the Capital Campaign for the Archdiocese. Later this summer we will have the annual Mission Appeal where a priest from a Missionary Order will come and ask for our support for the mission work of the Church. There seems to be a never ending need and request for our resources. Yet, part of being in the Church is being concerned and supportive of the work of the whole Church. This appeal that St. Paul makes today to the Corinthians has a particular meaning to me as I come to you at the end of this Fiscal Year. Our Annual Budget does not run on a calendar year but on a Fiscal Year. It begins on July 1st and ends on June 30th. We are just a few days from the end of this Fiscal Year 2014/2015 and about ready to start the new Fiscal Year 2015/2016. Our weekly need for this next Fiscal Year has increased because of the same increases all of us face in our yearly budget. Utilities, insurance, personnel cost, and other expenses tend to go up each year. To meet our obligations, we need the support of all. We are down this year in the number of families/households that have made financial pledges for the coming Fiscal Year. If you have not made a pledge, I ask you to pick up a form and prayerfully consider your sacrificial gift to the parish. We, like the Church in Corinth, excel in so many ways here at St. Pius X. We have a great tradition of generosity. I just ask that we all continue this great tradition. Discussions with the Pastor: I will be gone next week and will not be available in the multipurpose room.
