From the Pastor’s Desk

John the Baptist. Today we celebrate the feast of the precursor of our Lord Jesus. Usually the feasts of saints do not take precedence over the primary solemnity of Sunday, which the Church reminds us is a cele-bration of the Lord’s resurrection – EASTER. But some feasts which point to Jesus directly or flow from Him directly do replace a Sunday in Ordinary time. Today’s feast is a case in point. John the Baptist is all about Jesus. He cannot stand on his own and he is clear about that himself, “I am not the one you suppose, He is to come after me and I am not worthy to unfasten the straps of His sandals.” John’s coming is foreshadowed in the first chapter of Jerimiah and in Isaiah chapter 4. Both readings speak of a “servant” who announces good news to the ends of the earth. The Church has long recognized this “servant” to be John, the herald of salvation. In the second reading for the Sunday masses, St. Paul points not to the amazing quality of John’s birth pointed out in Luke’s gospel, but relates something more amazing, the story of John’s complete selflessness. John’s mission is to turn over to the promised Messiah all the attention he has gained, all the converts he has made, all the followers he has gathered. Thus the Baptist’s generosity knows no equal under the sun. As the gospels rush us into and through John’s work and on to his abandonment and death, we cling to the words of Isaiah, who helps us understand the greatness of John the Baptist: “My reward is with the Lord, my recompense is with my God…And I am now made glorious in the sight of the Lord, and my God is now my strength!” (Isaiah 49:4) John’s joy overflowed when he turned everyone over to the Messiah and Lord. His spirit was ready. A fierce light to the nations, John announced the Messiah whose salvation reached to the ends of the earth, right down to us today. Church tradition has found it fitting to set aside a special time to celebrate John, whose seemingly thankless mission slips by us when we first read of him during the Advent of every church year. We are so intent on preparing the way for Jesus during Advent that we tend to bypass John. We need a day just for him, and this is the day. John also gives a challenge; that as we follow Jesus, you and I are called to bring others to Him too. John could be a patron for us as we invite others, many of whom are Catholic in name, to re-consider a true relationship with Jesus’ Body, the Church.

Warrior of the Week

This week’s Warrior of the Week is Nathan Pederson. Nathan has been a student at St. Michael School since 5th grade. He played soccer and basketball for the Warriors, and also plays baseball. Nathan says his favorite thing about SMS is that it feels like a family. Nathan will be attending Andrean High School in the fall, and he says he will miss his friends and some teachers from SMS. His advice for younger students is to enjoy it while it lasts, and pay attention in class. Congratulations on your graduation, Nathan!

St. Michael School Is Accepting New Students Come see what SMS has to offer your child.

Please visit our website at www.stmichaelparish.life and see if a Catholic Education is right for your family.

Our dedicated staff services students in Preschool through 8th grade.

We are accepting new family registrations Monday-Friday, 8:00-3:00 PM.

Please call the school at 322-4531 for more information.

Band Members Rewarded for Hard Work

St. Michael's School Band had their traditional end of year band party to reward the kids for a job well done throughout the school year. It was held at Zig E's Funland in St. John on May 23rd. There was mini golfing, go carts, arcade and bungee jumping. Their music director, Mr. Pawlak, even joined in the fun and golfed with them. Our talented musicians get to perform twice during the school

year for St. Michael School students as well as St. John the Evangelist School, plus Christmas and Spring Evening Concerts for family and friends. We were blessed with beautiful weather for this fun event and we look forward to another great year of music this fall! Article & photos submitted by Maria Dahn

Parish Life Work on our church continues to progress and the fruits of our labors and your incredi-ble generosity are starting to show. Not only have bricks been replaced and the repairs on the bell tower begun, we have also seen the beginnings of an amazing transfor-mation in the new stonework on the upper level of the church. In addition to the work on the church, ground has been broken for our new digital sign. In the coming weeks, look for big changes along Route 30 as our old sign disappears and we step firmly into the 21st century with a beautiful brick founda-

tion holding up our new signage. Keep an eye on the bulletin and the website for more updates throughout the summer. Article & photos submitted by Patrick Massoels

Parish Life

Solemnity of the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist Stewardship: A Way of Life

RIGHT NOW! The feast of John the Baptist’s birth is probably not high on your list of annual celebrations. Maybe it should be! John was singled out by God for a unique role in our salvation. According to the Gospel accounts, the circumstances of his conception and birth were unusual, and his name was God given, not chosen by his parents. And, as we know, John was also the cousin of Jesus and leapt in recognition of Him even while both were in their mothers’ wombs. John is often called the “preparer of the way” because he is a bridge between the faith history of the Jews and a new reality that was about to begin with Jesus. John, we are told, prepared for his mission in the desert, away from dis-traction, until curious people heard about him and followed him to see what he was up to. John did not disappoint them. He began to preach, saying now is the time for people to repent of their sinful lives and be washed clean. God’s promises were about to be fulfilled. The Lord is here, right now, John pro-claimed, and He will pour out the power of the Holy Spirit on you. People asked him what they must do. John did not tell them to go to the synagogue and say the right prayers; he told them to behave with jus-tice and compassion (Luke 3:10–14). It is so easy for us not to hear the urgency of John’s message about the coming Messiah— the one John calls mightier than himself (see Luke 3:16)— because we have heard the story before. The urgency, however, is meant for us! We have been baptized, we can repent of our sins, and we have to change how we live, right now, today. Copyright (c) 2011, World Library Publications. THE WORD (Readings for July 1, 2018, Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time)

I. Wisdom 1:13-15, 2:23-24 God did not make death and does not delight when life is destroyed. All creatures of the world are wholesome. Through the devil’s envy, death entered the world.

II. 2 Corinthians 8:7, 9, 13-15 Paul the apostle wrote that the Corinthians have been given much by the

Lord. They should give to others in need as others give to them in their own need.

III. Mark 5:21-43 When Jesus was on His way to heal Jairus’ daughter, a woman touched His cloak and was healed of her sickness. Jesus told the woman, “Daughter, your faith has saved you.”

Dear Parish Members, Our Sunday bulletin is a primary way we use to communicate with you. The parish does not pay for the bul-letin printing because of the generosity of our advertisers-many of which are our own parish members. Most are members of our local community. Please support our advertisers with your patronage. Let the business owner know that you appreciate their support of our parish through their advertising in the bulletin.

A strong and vibrant parish is good for our community and a strong business community is good for our parish.
