GO

evening and welcom

e to our old friendsfrom

Great W

akering Rovers for tonight’s E

ssexS

enior Cup Third

Round tie.

It’s been a while since w

e played Rovers

competitively and they arrive at R

ookery Hill

tonight under the managem

ent of Gary A

nsell,w

ho includes two spells as a R

ocks player onhis footballing C

V.Following the resignation of

Dan Trenkell, G

ary recently stepped up and totake over as caretaker boss and he now

hasthe R

overs hot seat on a permanent basis.

I am sure everyone at E

ast Thurrock will join

me in w

ishing him w

ell as he starts hism

anagerial career.Tonight’s com

petition is one in which w

ehaven’t enjoyed great success and I know

thatm

anager John Coventry w

ould like to have agood run in the cup but of courseany team

selection is going to betem

pered by the state of the club’splaying resources and the pressure

from other com

petitions and with a lengthy

injury list and an FATrophy tie com

ing up at thew

eekend it may be that a few

players get a resttonight.

How

ever, the sprit in the squad that has beengrow

ing in recent weeks, culm

inating inS

aturday’s excellent performance against

Ham

pton and Richm

ond Borough m

eans, I amsure, that w

ho is selected will be approaching

the game w

ith a determination to do w

ell.W

hatever happens, tonight’s match w

ill beplayed to a conclusion, w

ith a penalty shoot-outto sort things out if required.

Looking ahead, we have a very tough gam

eagainst Tiverton Tow

n on Saturday in the

Trophy.It’s going to be a costly m

atch to stagebecause w

e have to meet the travelling expens-

es of the Devon side so hopefully local folk w

illturn out to support us.If you get the chance, please spread the w

ord and hopefully we w

illget a decent crow

d to help cheer the lads on astage nearer to W

embley!

GO

evening to everyone, particularly Gary

Ansell w

ho is just starting out on hism

anagerial career.Gary is a real character

and I am sure he w

ill enjoy the many

challenges that this job brings with it.

He has plenty of experience in the gam

eand I am

sure he will have absorbed a lot

from all the people he has w

orked with and I

am sure he is a good fit for a club like R

overs.I am

certain that he will have got his side

all revved up for tonight’s match and they w

illgive us a real test.

The E

ssex Senior C

up is one of thosecom

petitions that you want to do w

ell in and Im

ust admit that having attended a couple of

recent finals it’s one of the things I would like

to experience but sometim

es you have to putthings in order of im

portance and with our

being still involved in the FA Trophy and h

aving just put a string of results together thathave have set us up w

ell in the league itcertainly affects the w

ay we go about

selecting a side for tonight.In addition, w

e have been hit by a run ofquite serious injuries that has put a lot ofpressure on the squad.O

f course you have todeal w

ith all those things, which is the

challenge of the game but it does m

ean thatw

e have to prioritise.H

aving said that, sometim

es adversity canbring challenges and opportunities and at the

time of w

riting it’s likely that a couple ofplayers w

ho have been on the fringe will get

the chance to lay down a m

arker.I whole-

heartedly believe in the ability of everyone inour squad so you can be certain that w

e havethe ability to do w

ell tonight, like most gam

esit’s all about attitude and how

our playersapproach the gam

e.I have to say that I couldn’t have been

prouder of the squad last Saturday against

Ham

pton, it was a terrific perform

ance fromfront to back and an exam

ple of what can be

achieved when the attitude and spirit is right.

Make no m

istake, Ham

pton are a decentside and the fact that w

e matched them

inevery departm

ent was really pleasing.

Enjoy the gam

e tonight, C

EA

ST Thurrock U

delighted after Saturday’s R

in atR

ance as “just the way you w

ant to win a m

atch.”R

ocks have been hit by a series of injuries andfielded centre half R

yan Scott as a m

akeshift strikeragainst H

ampton, w

ho went into the m

atch in secondplace in the table.H

is players responded with a terrif-

ic, workm

anlike display and if, in the final balance, they got the rub of the green w

ith luck and the offi-cials’decisions, it w

as no more than their efforts

deserved.The hosts m

ade a flying start and could easily havescored tw

o goals within the first five m

inutes, asB

orough struggled to deal with the w

indy conditionsfrom

the off.The first chance fell to Scott from

a cor-ner but he w

as unable to guide his strike below the

bar.The second chance fell to Tom

Wraight from

three yards out, as Ryan S

amm

ons sent a whipped

cross to the back post, but his instinctive strike came

back off the underside of the bar and into the arms of

grateful keeper Mark S

mith.

How

ever, the home got w

hat they deserved n the24th m

inute, thanks to a well w

orked move from

acorner w

hen the ball was delivered to the apex of the

box and Scott, expertly guided his side-footed effort

into the bottom right corner, though S

mith m

ay well

think he could have done better as he got both handsto the ball, but w

as only able to palm it into the side-

netting.The clim

ax of an enthralling half in which both

sides showed great determ

ination to master difficult

conditions came w

hen East Thurrock doubled their

lead seconds before the break when Lew

is Sm

ith’ssuperbly flighted free kick cam

e back off the under-

side of the bar but this time H

arry Honesty w

as onhand to prod the ball hom

e from close range.

There was still tim

e for Ham

pton to get the ball intothe R

ocks net before half time, but assistant referee

Rhys B

attye was on hand to rule out the effort for off-

side.B

ut just 30 seconds into the second half Ham

ptongot a goal back w

hen Sam

my K

nott’s clearance was

held up in the wind and the ball w

as returned backinto the box, w

here Sim

on Peddie’s attempted clear-

ance looped up and over keeper Lukas Lidakeviciusinto his ow

n net.Ham

pton enjoyed the lion’s share ofpossession, but R

ocks, marshalled by a terrific display

at centre half by skipper Rickie H

ayles, held firm.

On one occasion they cracked and Jerom

eFederico forced the ball hom

e but his effort was con-

troversially ruled out by assistant referee Robert

Claussen’s raised flag. The official had a poor half,

getting a succession of decisions wrong and he

appeared to have made another serious m

isjudge-m

ent with this verdict, m

uch to the relief of Rocks and

anger of the visiting frontline. There w

as to be an another significant mom

ent tenm

inutes from tim

e when C

harlie Moon’s close range

header seemed goalbound but som

ehow Lidakevicius

stretched an arm and paw

ed the ball away.

The extraordinary save lifted his teamm

ates andhelped them

see out a great rearguard action andthey m

ight even have sneaked a goal with a couple of

late breakaways but in the end they saw

out the victo-ry to delight boss C

oventry, who said:“I thought this

was a really hard-w

orking performance by a group of

players who are starting to believe in them

selves.S

ometim

es you can win a gam

e comfortably, som

e-tim

es you have to work and fight hard, just like w

e didtoday and it w

as a really great way to w

side Woking 2-0 after a 1-1 draw

at Rookery

chance of promotion till A

2004/05 saw the club sw

itch to the Southern

League in an FA re-structure.The club w

erenever out of the top five all season and finishedrunners-up to Fisher A

that followed w

as to the Rym

an Prem

ier.Rocks

survived their first two seasons in the P

remier

without too m

uch trouble but in 2007-8 despiteheading the table in the early stages, they foundit m

ore of a struggle, particularly after Pattersonleft in the autum

n to take over at Conference

South B

raintree.Patterson’s assistant, John C

oventry, tookover the reins but they w

ere eventually relegat-ed by the cruellest of m

argins, one deductedpoint for playing an ineligible player for a m

inuteat the tale end of a gam

e.It looked as if R

ocks would bounce back at

the first attempt but they lost out on the R

yman

One N

orth title in a last day defeat by Aveleyand then bow

ed out in the play-off to Concord

Rangers - a fate that w

as to befall them again

the following season after finishing fifth.

How

ever, it was to prove to be third tim

elucky in 2010-11 w

hen Rocks topped the table

to join the Rym

an top flight after overhaulingearly pacesetters N

eedham M

arket.2011-12 brought trem

endous success as theR

ocks reached the first round of the FA C

up,going out to then Football League sideM

acclesfield Town, in a televised m

atch inw

hich the 3-0 scoreline to the Silkm

en didn’treflect the flow

of the game.

The club also reached the final of the Rym

anLeague C

up for the first time in its history, los-

ing 1-0 to Bury Tow

n, and the last 32 of the FATrophy, w

here progress was eventually halted

at Ham

pton and Richm

ond Borough in a m

uch-delayed replay.

To cap it all off, a strong run at the end of theseason saw

Rocks finish tenth in the table, their

highest position ever – and they were nam

edthe R

yman P

of the sea-son.N

ot bad for the club’s first season back in theR

yman P

again enjoyed a great FA C

atic and emotionally charged FA

fourth qualifying round replay against

Chelm

ing 4-4 draw at R

ookery Hill.A

n equally dra-m

atic 2-2 draw at C

helmsford three days before

had put them in the first round draw

for a sec-ond success season, though it w

Colchester.H

owever, R

aside and in the second half of the seasonem

barked on a remarkable run that saw

themclaim

fifth place in the final table and a play-offgam

e at Lowestoft, w

hich they were unlucky to

lose 1-0.2013-14 w

as something of a contrast.A

Firstqualifying round exit at hom

e in a replayagainstH

ornchurch set the tempo and though

Rocks progressed through a couple of rounds

in the FATrophy they struggled in m

id seasonand found them

selves slipping down the table.

Ultim

ately the season came dow

n to a last daydecider w

hen Rocks needed a w

in at home to

Bognor to secure their place.W

hen they found themselves tw

thing looked glum but C

ovo’s side battled backand ultim

ately won 3-2 and though results else-

where w

ould have saved them anyw

ay, Rocks

were able to say they had saved them

selvesw

hen it mattered.

Last season again brought an FA C

zone eventually tapered away and they finished

in midtable.

Last season saw the club end the cam

14 season coming through a last day battle to

avoid the drop.N

The Corringham

Social S

basis for the new team

but there were hurdles to

overcome for the new

club including finding a suit-able ground.

During the first season as m

embers of the

Southern E

founding fathers of the club stepped down.

There were m

anagerial and ground changesw

ith the team at the B

After joining the E

ssex Senior League in 1979

the Rocks changed ground again to the form

With loans from

the Football Association,

Thurrock Council and G

reene King the club w

asable to buy its site in C

orringham and played its

first match there in 1984.

The club won its first senior trophy, the League

Cup, in the 1988/89 season and w

on again in1992.

An application to the Isthm

manager at the start of the 1999-2000 season

and guided them to the R

Patterson left during the next season with The

Rocks sitting top of the table.A

long with him

went

many of the players and the club slid dow
