THE CALL OF THE GOOD SHEPHERD The Twenty-third Psalm, today's respon-sorial psalm, is arguably the best known of all the psalms. The line that reads "Even though I walk in the dark valley / I fear no evil; for you are at my side / with your rod and your staff / that give me courage" (Psalm 23:4) connects this week's scriptures to the wonderful story of the road to Emmaus, which we heard last week. The Lord Jesus, our Good Shepherd, is constantly at our side. He calls us each by name, beckoning us into a deeper relationship with him. That call, issued to each of us at the moment of our baptism, carries with it the promise of the Good Shepherd: "I came so that they might have life and have it more abundantly" (John 10:10). TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The fact that many monastic churches do not have a prominent tabernacle shapes the patterns of liturgical prayer. Monas-tic communities often protect the ancient value of "receiving from the same sacri-fice," meaning that the communicants are assured that what they eat and drink in the Holy Mysteries actually comes from the same celebration. It surprises many to learn that the Church does not foresee, nor does it provide for, Com-munion of the faithful from the reserved Sacrament. Liturgical laws have long defended your right to receive from the same sacrifice, the same Mass, that you attend. At one time, of course, the bread for the Eucharist was the ordinary bread of the day, except unleavened, probably pre-pared at home. It was broken and distrib-uted to the faithful. Early on the loaf itself was referred to as the hostia in Latin, meaning the "sacrifice," the same word for the sacrificial animal in Jewish worship, and for Jesus as the Lamb of God. By giving his life on the cross, Jesus became the hostia for us. To this day in the Greek Church, one of the tasks of the priest's wife is to bake the bread for the Divine Liturgy, sometimes in a bakery oven dedicated to that pur-pose and called a "Bethlehem." Today's familiar individual hosts first appeared in the eleventh century at about the time when tabernacles were coming into use. The turn away from "bready" bread allowed the hosts to be reserved since they did not spoil like regular bread, and made the annual "Easter du-ty" counts easier. --Rev. James Field, Copyright (c) J. EL LLAMADO DEL BUEN PASTOR El salmo responsorial de hoy es el Salmo 23 y sin duda es el más conocido de los salmos. Los versos que rezan: "Aunque camine por cañadas oscuras, / nada temo, porque tú vas conmigo: / tu vara y tu cayado me sosiegan" (Salmo 23:4) se vinculan en las lecturas bíblicas de esta semana con el maravilloso relato sobre el camino a Emaús, que escu-chamos la semana pasada. El Señor Jesús, nuestro Buen Pastor, está constan-temente a nuestro lado. Nos llama por nuestro nombre, atrayéndonos a una más profunda relación con él. Ese llamado, hecho a cada uno de nosotros en el mo-mento de nuestro bautismo, lleva la promesa del Buen Pastor: "Yo he venido para que tengan vida y la tengan en abundancia" (Juan 10:10). TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE El 19 de abril en Uruguay se conmem-ora a la Virgen del Verdún, que está colocada sobre una columna de seis metros en uno de los cerros que rodean la ciudad de Minas. Esta imagen fue puesta allí por el párroco don José De Luca en 1900. Su intención era dedicar esta imagen en recuerdo del siglo diecinueve y recibir así el siglo veinte, dedicándolo a María Inmaculada en honor de Cristo Redentor. En el 2007 la peregrinación a la Virgen del Verdún llevaba como lema "De la mano de María, discípulos y misioneros de Jesucristo". Este bello refrán nos recuerda que vamos caminando de la mano de María, nuestra hermana en la fe, para ser como ella, discípulos de su hijo y misioneros del mensaje redentor de Jesucristo. No obstante, hay que reconocer que mucho cristianos, espe-cialmente nosotros, los latinoamerica-nos, nos quedamos sólo con María y nunca llegamos a Jesús. Đức Thánh Cha sẽ đến Fatima

Đgh. Phanxicô sẽ có mặt tại Fatima ngày 12-13 tháng 5, vào dịp kỷ niệm 100 năm Đức Mẹ hiện ra tại đây cho ba trẻ mục đồng vào năm 1917 trong bối cảnh toàn thế giới bị đảo lộn bởi Đệ nhất Thế chiến.

Theo Đức hồng y Manuel Clemente, Thượng phụ Lisbonne, Đức Thánh Cha chỉ giới hạn chuyến tông du lần này tại Fatima mà không viếng thăm bất cứ một thành phố nào khác của Bồ Đào Nha.

Vào tháng Tư năm ngoái, Đức Thánh Cha đã bày tỏ nguyện vọng hành hương Fatima vào dịp trọng đại này khi chia sẻ với vị giám mục sở tại rằng : “Nếu Thiên Chúa còn cho tôi sống và khỏe mạnh, tôi ước ao được đến nơi Đức Mẹ hiện ra.”

Hai tháng sau khi được bầu làm giáo hoàng, ngài cũng đã dâng triều đại của mình cho Đức Mẹ Fatima.

Tưởng cũng nhắc lại, đây là vị giáo hoàng thứ tư đặt chân tới địa điểm hành hương Fatima : đầu tiên là Đgh. Phaolô VI vào ngày 13/05/1967 nhân dịp kỷ niệm 50 năm; Đgh. Gioan Phaolô II với ba lần—vào năm 1982 để tạ ơn Đức Mẹ che chở khỏi cuộc ám sát, 1991 và năm 2000 dịp Năm thánh bước sang Thiên Niên kỷ mới; và Đgh. Bênêđictô XVI đến đây vào tháng Năm, 2010.

Theo hai hiến chương cũ của Hội đồng Giám mục (HĐGM) và Hội Công giáo Ái quốc (HCGAQ) Trung Hoa, những thay đổi về lãnh đạo của hai tổ chức này chỉ cần được báo cáo cho các cơ quan liên hệ của nhà cầm quyền. Nhưng theo các hiến chương mới, hai tổ chức này phải báo cáo thay đổi cho các cơ quan để “xét duyệt và phê chuẩn.” Bên cạnh đó, nếu chủ tịch của một trong hai tổ chức này phải từ chức, ai là quyền chủ tịch phải được “tuyển chọn” thay vì được “bầu cử.” Đó là vì nhà cầm quyền sợ rằng Tòa thánh Vaticano có thể yêu cầu các vị giám mục hạ bệ một chủ tịch và thay thế bằng một vị được Tòa thánh hậu thuẫn. Tuyển chọn ở đây có nghĩa là nhà cầm quyền đề cử một vài ứng viên để các giám mục bầu, thay vì để cho các giám mục bầu bất cứ ai vào vai trò chủ tịch. Hơn thế, hiến chương mới còn tạo điều kiện để nhà cầm quyền dễ dàng bổ nhiệm chủ tịch danh dự để kiểm soát chủ tịch được trúng cử nếu cần. - Theo International.la-croix.com, 21-3-2017

May is Mental Health Awareness Month The magnitude of mental illness in this country is staggering. According to the Sur-geon General, one in every five Americans experiences a mental disorder in any given year and half of all Americans have such disorders at some time in their lives. These illnesses of the brain affect all of us, regardless of age, gender, economic sta-tus or ethnicity. Nearly every person sitting in the pews has been touched in some way by mental illness. And yet individuals and families continue to suffer in silence or stop coming to their faith community because they are not receiving the support they so desperately need. They become detached from their faith community and their spirituality, which is an important source of healing, wholeness and hope in times of personal darkness. There is hope!
