Background to the LiturgySolemnity of Christ the King

Pope Pius XI instituted the Feast of Christ the King in 1925. At that time, the celebration was on the last Sunday of October, the Sunday nearest All Saints Day. It is now placed as the last Sunday of the Church Year. The symbolism is obvious: Christ is the beginning and the end, of all things.

In his “The Church’s Year of Grace” Pius Parsch remarks that the feast of Christ the King was instituted to counteract several phenomena at that time. One was the totalitarianism of Communism, Nazism, and Socialism — the attitude that the supreme value of all things was the state.

Another attitude was quietism, a tendency toward pietism and sentimentalism: the attitude that prayer and prayer alone would save the world from catastrophe. In our times, “king” is not a very relevant term. But in the context of salvation history, the honoring of Christ as King means that he is the entire meaning of our lives.He sums up the theology of “king” in the Old Testament: The king was to bring the people to God; he was to rule in the name of the Lord; he was to deliver the people from all dangers and to provide for all their needs.In the Scriptures, there are many distinct theologies of Jesus. The “old” Jerome Biblical Commentary has an excellent article on the titles of Jesus in #78: 1-61. Each of these titles gives a new meaning or theology of the person of Jesus.

Background to the LiturgySolemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe

“Messiah” or “Lord” or “Son of God” Or. “Son of Man” or “Lamb of God” or “Good Shepherd” or any of the other titles, we just don’t think of the meaning. Yet each title has a profound and well-developed theology of Jesus. Honoring Jesus as Christ and King should help us to realize that he is more, than just a nice friend or emotional crutch. He, the Lord of glory who is ruler of the universe will come to judge the living and the dead. He must be the heart, center, and ruler of our lives.

Our first reading (Ezekiel 34: 11-12, 15-17) is one of the earliest passages in the Bible which uses the metaphor of the Lord as the Shepherd. Ezekiel describes what a shepherd does for his sheep: He cares for them, protects them, feeds them, heals them and “judges” them. In biblical times, «shepherd» always had overtones of “kingship.” David was the shepherd-king. As he had tended his flocks, so he was called to tend the flock of Israel. The Messiah, the Son of David, was also called to be the shepherd of his people Israel, to be the king.

The second reading (1 Corinthians 15: 20-26, 28) is the famous chapter on the resurrection. Recall that the Corinthians were denying the resurrection of the body (i.e. the general resurrection) although they probably believed in the resurrection of Christ. For St. Paul, this attitude was a contradiction: The Christian is joined to Christ in one body. (“We are buried with him in baptism and arise in newness of life.” Paul also saw the Eucharist as “making” the Body of Christ: If we all receive of the Body and Blood of the Lord, we become that one Body.) Since we are joined with Christ, what happens to him must happen to us: We die in imitation of and participation with Christ; we must also rise because of him. It is a matter of cause and effect. Christ is the cause, and the effect must follow.

Today’s reading shows the primacy of Christ in the resurrection: He is “first-fruits” (first of which others flow as effects). All sovereignty and authority are his because of this. On the last day, he will destroy even death, and will present his kingdom to the Father.

The Gospel (Matthew 25: 31-46) is the beautiful — and fearful — scene of the Last Judgment. This is one of the rare places in the synoptic Gospels where Jesus pictures himself as Lord and Judge. In John’s Gospel, the titles of Jesus are superlatives from the very first chapter. But in the synoptic Gospels, we rarely find such a proclamation. In this scene Jesus says, “when the Son of Man comes in his glory . . .” Elsewhere, when Jesus uses “Son of Man,” it may mean simply a humble person, such as the expression is in Jeremiah. Jesus may have used the expression of himself because’ it was ambiguous. It could refer to his humble humanity, but it could also refer to the Son of Man of Daniel 7:14, a triumphant figure standing between heaven and earth. In apocalyptic literature, “Son of Man” has those cosmic overtones. Quite obviously here, “Son of Man” means Jesus who is in glory at the Last Judgment. The Father has handed judgment over to him. The Son of Man sits on his royal throne.

The expression “king” is then used for the Son of Man. (“The king will say to those on his right . . . “) The crucial point of judgment is the identification of Jesus and his followers. What a person does to the least of Jesus’ followers, he does to Jesus — for good or for ill.

A lot of modern people would like to avoid the thought of judgment. In recent years, we have tried to emphasize the loving kindness of God. We must always do this. But the emphasis on God’s mercy and love must never obscure the fact of judgment. We shall be judged on the basis of what we do. We cannot make excuses or rationalize our way out of the Last Judgment. We cannot say that we didn’t know or that we didn’t realize — for Jesus has told us that our actions toward others are actions toward him.

There will be punishment for the goats just as there will be reward for the sheep. Not everyone will be on the king’s right hand. As we preach love, so we must preach justice. God must punish evil, or he cannot truly reward good. Let us be loyal to Christ, our King, the Alpha and the Omega, the judge of all, before whom we shall all appear to render an account of our lives.

Jesus told us, “Whatever you do to the least of my brothers, you do it to me.” If our attire is indecently provocative (short shorts, strapless, backless, spaghetti strap dresses/tops, or displaying cleavage), displaying unwholesome graphics (skulls, advertisements, scantily clad people) or tattered, it becomes offensive to our brothers and sisters who are worshipping the Lord and therefore offensive to God’s Majesty. Ask this question: “Would you dress this way before God?” You are! He sees everything and you are in His house.
