Stewardship as a Disciple of Christ:

Navigating Your Finances God's Way More often than not, when we think of stewardship, we think of fi-nances, tithes and offerings. But it’s much more than that. Steward-ship is, in fact, our obedient witness to God’s sovereignty. It’s what motivates us as followers of Christ to move into action, doing deeds that manifest our belief in Him. This pulpit and cell group series chal-lenges us to take our journey of discipleship to the next level in all aspects of our lives. Ask your friends to join us.

Pastoral Tip 18 4 Oct 2015

Dear brothers and sisters

Many of us think we don’t need help with our finances. We’re adults, after all, and we can make our own decisions. But the truth is we all need help. God wants you to be financially free. And it is also important to know why you want to become financially free. This may seem like a “no-brainer.” After all, why would you want to be in financial bondage because of debt? Nevertheless, your motivation for becoming debt free is important. Learning and practicing God’s biblical principles of finances to become debt free, actually is a path to know Christ more intimately and be financially free to serve Him.

Transfer ownership to God. Most Christians have been taught to handle 10% of their money God’s way through giving a tithe, but they are clueless with what to do with the other 90%. One powerful principle to remember is that all 100% of it was given to you by God. Recognize that God really owns what you have and that includes your family as well as your time and things. You and I are just merely managers of the wealth God gives us. (Psa. 24:1)

Hold Loosely to Everything In the book of Ecclesiastes, King Solomon mentions several times how stressful life can be for those whose life’s goal is the pursuit of wealth or riches. Is it wrong to have nice things? Certainly not! But those that are consumed with wanting more live a stress-filled life.

Solomon talks about how the poor man has peaceful sleep after spending his day laboring in the field, while the rich man tosses and turns worrying about how to hold onto all his wealth. If you can learn the value of holding loosely to what you have, the pressure will begin to roll off your shoulders. Holding loosely does not mean you live flippantly and do not take careful consideration for what you have. It means that you recognize that it is all God’s to begin with anyway

Be Faithful with What We are Given It is easy to be tempted to live above your means and to be enticed by how the media defines success. Why not instead choose to be different? Decide today that you are going to be more intentional with your money and empower yourself to say no.

Get out of debt. Break the habits that keep you in debt – like spending more than you earn and, borrowing. Save so you don’t have to borrow. (Pro. 15:16)

Refuse the temptation to make hasty financial decisions. Don’t buy into get-rich-quick schemes or be pressured to make quick decisions based on incomplete information. (Pro. 21:5) Seek wise counsel. (Pro. 15:22)

Learn the Value of Contentment Learn to be content with whatever condition you are currently in. A discontented spirit produces greed and covetousness. Contentment results from a proper relationship with God based on accepting the lifestyle that He has made provision for in your life. (Phi. 4:11-12) Your life is as rich as you want to make it. Contentment is a choice.

Accept God’s provision for you. Learn to accept God’s provision for you; accept His provision without resentment. Sometimes He’ll do this through the abundance of others; however, He never promises to provide equally for everyone. (2 Cor. 8:14) God is wiser than you are and He will provide for your needs just as He promised. (Mat. 6:31).

Believe God’s promise that your needs will be met. God’s promise is God’s word of encouragement for us to claim by faith and cling to in difficult times. God’s promise is a declaration of His intention to graciously bestow a gift upon His children. God’s promise usually meets a specific need in your life.

Trust God and be willing to submit to His will and direction. We say we trust God, but there’s a great difference between saying and trusting. Often we trust if it’s convenient or necessary as a last resort. God expects us to trust Him daily, in all things. (Pro. 3:5-6; 19:21)

Our failure to view this present life through the lens of eternity is one of the biggest hindrances to seeing life and finances in their true light. Yet Scripture states that the reality of our eternal future should determine the character of the present life and the use of money and possessions. "For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world, and forfeit his soul?” Mar. 8:36.
