supporting an ecological balance.
Malaria-free game-viewing haven
“You know you are tru
ly alive when you’re
living among lions.”
- Karen Blixen, Out of
Africa
Flora & Fauna
South-west of the Kruger National Park lays a land of
wonder. The savannah plains surrounding the Komati
River and framed by ancient mountains are the perfect
image of Africa. The Nkomazi Game Reserve is not only
home to a high density of game in malaria-free area,
but has an abundance of San rock art, an incredible
diversity of plant life, 300 bird species and the oldest
and largest meteorite impact deposit on earth.
The Nkomazi Game Reserve in Mpumalanga has
been restored to a wildlife haven. It is here where
great natural beauty and the 3.7 billion years of
history meet. The Nkomazi conservation project
has celebrated the return of wild animals to an area
of South Africa where they can once again roam in
great abundance.
The Barberton Mountainland where the Nkomazi
The Barberton Mountainland where the Nkomazi
Game Reserve with the Komati Tended Lodge is
situated features a plant biodiversity higher than that
of the entire Kruger National Park and second only
in South Africa to the Cape Fynbos and succulents.
Biologically, this particular region in Africa is home
to an incredible variety of native plants and animals,
and is one of the recognised ‘Centres of Biological
Endemism’ in South Africa.
The Nkomazi Game Reserve also offers protection to
the oldest fossils of life on Earth and preserves vast
tracts of grasslands, the biome that is recognised
today as the most threatened in the world. The
reserve’s grassy ridges and forested valleys are full
of rare and endangered species of plant and animals.
Wildlife, vegetation and geology, are all inextricably
interconnected here in this region.
Unique to this area of South Africa in the hills north
east of Barberton are three butterflies which only
occur here and nowhere else worldwide. They are the
Swanepoel’s Blue, Jeffery’s Blue and Barbara’s Copper
butterflies. The total bird count over the Barberton
municipal is a staggering 250 different species.
The Nkomazi Game Reserve is situated close to the
picturesque town of Barberton, the Kruger National
Park, Pilgrims Rest, the Blyde River Canyon, Gods’
Window and other beautiful attractions of the
Mpumalanga Province.
The Nkomazi Game Reserve is known as the ‘place
of water’. The reserve and the Komati Tented Lodge
represent real Africa with the scenic beauty, the
dramatic landscapes, the rolling savannah, the
untamed African bushveld, the unique wildlife,
the relaxed atmosphere, which is combined with
exclusivity and luxury as well as its fascinating
cultural history.
Activities
Guests can enjoy game drives, twice a day, and
experience the sun rise over the North Eastern
boundaries of the reserve during a game drive or
take in the spectacular views from lookout points
among the rocky granite sentinels of the highlands
of the reserve. Enjoy 15 km of river frontage and
rock pools, while rolling grasslands support large
herds of free-roaming wildlife, making Nkomazi a
game-viewing haven.

fishing, guided mountain biking, star gazing under the
magnificent African sky and various treatments at the
