MeditationIsaiah 63:7 NRSV

I will recount the gracious deeds of the LORD, the praiseworthy acts of

the LORD, because of all that the LORD has done for us, and the great favor to the house of Israel that the LORD has shown them according to

his mercy, according to the abundance of his steadfast love.

Angels from the realms of glory,

wing your flight o’er all the earth;

ye who sang creation’s story

now proclaim Messiah’s birth:

Come and worship,

come and worship,

worship Christ, the newborn King.

Page 9: Welcome to New Hope United Methodist Church December 28, 2014.

Shepherds, in the field abiding,

watching o’er your flocks by night,

God with us is now residing;

yonder shines the infant light:

Come and worship,

come and worship,

worship Christ, the newborn King.

Page 10: Welcome to New Hope United Methodist Church December 28, 2014.

Sages, leave your contemplations,

brighter visions beam afar;

seek the great Desire of nations;

ye have seen his natal star:

Come and worship,

come and worship,

worship Christ, the newborn King.

Page 11: Welcome to New Hope United Methodist Church December 28, 2014.

Saints, before the alter bending,

watching long in hope and fear;

suddenly the Lord, descending,

in his temple shall appear:

Come and worship,

come and worship,

worship Christ, the newborn King.

Opening Prayer(based upon Psalm 148:11-14)

Praise the LORD rulers of the earth and all peoples! Young men and women alike, old and young together, we praise the name of the LORD, for God’s name alone is exalted;

GOD’s glory is above earth and heaven. The LORD has raised up a horn for God’s people,

so we gather to offer ourselves in thanks and praise. Amen.

What child is this who,

laid to rest,

on Mary’s lap is sleeping?

Whom angels greet

with anthems sweet,

while shepherds watch

are keeping?

Page 17: Welcome to New Hope United Methodist Church December 28, 2014.

This, this is Christ the King,

whom shepherds guard

and angels sing;

Haste, haste to bring him laud,

the babe, the son of Mary.

Page 18: Welcome to New Hope United Methodist Church December 28, 2014.

Why lies he in such

mean estate

where ox and ass are feeding?

Good Christians, fear,

for sinners here

the silent Word is pleading.

Page 19: Welcome to New Hope United Methodist Church December 28, 2014.

This, this is Christ the King,

whom shepherds guard

and angels sing;

Haste, haste to bring him laud,

the babe, the son of Mary.

Page 20: Welcome to New Hope United Methodist Church December 28, 2014.

So bring him incense, gold,

and myrrh,

come, peasant, king, to own him;

the King of kings

salvation brings,

let loving hearts enthrone him.

Page 21: Welcome to New Hope United Methodist Church December 28, 2014.

whom shepherds guard

and angels sing;

O Little Town of Bethlehem

Hymnal #230

Used By Permission. CCLI License # 11148194

Page 41: Welcome to New Hope United Methodist Church December 28, 2014.

O little town of Bethlehem,how still we see thee lie;

above thy deep and dreamless sleepthe silent stars go by.

Yet in thy dark streets shineththe everlasting light;

the hopes and fears of all the yearsare met in thee tonight.

Page 42: Welcome to New Hope United Methodist Church December 28, 2014.

For Christ is born of Mary,and gathered all above,

while mortals sleep, the angels keeptheir watch of wondering love.

O morning stars together,proclaim the holy birth,

and praises sing to God the King,and peace to all on earth!

Page 43: Welcome to New Hope United Methodist Church December 28, 2014.

How silently, how silently,the wondrous gift is given;

so God imparts to human heartsthe blessings of his heaven.

No ear may hear his coming,but in this world of sin,

where meek souls will receive him,still the dear Christ enters in.

Page 44: Welcome to New Hope United Methodist Church December 28, 2014.

O holy Child of Bethlehem,descend to us, we pray;

cast out our sin, and enter in,be born in us today.

We hear the Christmas angelsthe great glad tidings tell;

O come to us, abide with us,our Lord Emmanuel!

Luke 2:21-24 NRSV -Barbara Roberson

After eight days had passed, it was time to circumcise the child; and he was called Jesus, the name given by the angel before he was conceived in the womb. When the time came for their purification according to the law of Moses, they brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord (as it is written in the law of the Lord, “Every firstborn male shall be designated as holy to the Lord”), and they offered a sacrifice according to what is stated in the law of the Lord, “a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons.”

Luke 2:25-27 NRSV -Gail Hall

Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon; this man was righteous and devout, looking forward to the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit rested on him. It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Messiah. Guided by the Spirit, Simeon came into the temple;

Page 54: Welcome to New Hope United Methodist Church December 28, 2014.

Luke 2:27-32 NRSV

and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him what was customary under the law, Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying,“Master, now you are dismissing your servant in peace, according to your word;for my eyes have seen your salvation,which you have prepared in the presence of all peoples,a light for revelation to the Gentiles and for glory to your people Israel.”

Page 55: Welcome to New Hope United Methodist Church December 28, 2014.

Luke 2:33-35 NRSV

And the child’s father and mother were amazed at what was being said about him. Then Simeon blessed them and said to his mother Mary, “This child is destined for the falling and the rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be opposed so that the inner thoughts of many will be revealed—and a sword will pierce your own soul too.”

Page 58: Welcome to New Hope United Methodist Church December 28, 2014.

Love came down at Christmas,Love all lovely, Love divine;

Love was born at Christmas;star and angels gave the sign.

Page 59: Welcome to New Hope United Methodist Church December 28, 2014.

Worship we the Godhead,Love incarnate, Love divine;

Worship we our Jesus,but wherewith for sacred sign?

Page 60: Welcome to New Hope United Methodist Church December 28, 2014.

Love shall be our token;love be yours and love be mine;

love to God and all men,love for plea and gift and sign.

Luke 2:36-38 NRSV - Tony Marino

There was also a prophet, Anna the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was of a great age, having lived with her husband seven years after her marriage, then as a widow to the age of eighty-four. She never left the temple but worshiped there with fasting and prayer night and day. At that moment she came, and began to praise God and to speak about the child to all who were looking for the redemption of Jerusalem.

Page 62: Welcome to New Hope United Methodist Church December 28, 2014.

Benediction

May the God of Anna and Simeon, Mary and Joseph, you and me, cause us toe grow like Jesus, in wisdom and strength. May the grace of God be upon

us. Amen.
