More Guidelines• Be clear about which message you're responding to. Refer to specific

passages or ideas in the course or text that have sparked your interest.

• Make sure your contribution adds something new to the discussion. A simple "I agree" may be your initial response, but think about how you can take the conversation to the next level.

• Make your posting clear and easy to follow by dividing longer messages into paragraphs.

• Address classmates by name or user name, and sign your own messages.

• Feel free to pose new questions to your classmates within your own message.

• Grammar: Use correct spelling, capitalization, grammar, syntax, and punctuation.

• If you plan on posting a lengthy response, it is a good idea to type your response in Word or Notepad, then copy and paste it into the discussion area. This way you'll always have a record of your communication if for some reason you lose your connection to the course.

• Acceptable Response:• I currently own a MDX Truck and purchased my truck in 2004. At the time, it was the only car that

appealed to me image-wise and it was also in my budget. I shopped around for about two years before I finally decided to make a decision. I test drove the Mazda RX and really liked it but at the time, I needed to also have a car that could fit my husband’s 6 foot-3 inch frame if we needed to switch up cars so the Mazda was out of the question. I didn't want a larger SUV and much to my husband's chagrin, it really made no sense for someone my frame, without kids (at the time), to drive around in Washington DC's nightmarish congestion with an Expedition or Navigator. I opted for the MDX instead. Additionally, we talked about starting a family within a year or two and wanted something that could accommodate our potential growing family. The gas mileage wasn't terrible but considering that my MDX can only take premium gas and with gas prices being what they are now, I sometimes cringe when the gas needle teeters near "E". Still, it's been a great investment overall and it takes about $68 to fill up my tank every week.

• To me, it wasn't so much the brand name that was appealing as the style of the car and safety reports, hence the reason why it took me two years to decide on the MDX I chose. If another comparable car existed, call it brand "x", and it had all of the features that my MDX had, I would have considered it. However, I would be a bit skeptical if there weren't any substantial reports regarding safety and reliability that I could use to compare it with the MDX. "x"

• Lastly, I chose the Acura's MDX because we had a personal mechanic who specialized in MDX maintenance. My husband's friend owned a car repair shop (on the side) and he had over 10 years experience performing maintenance on Acura's, Honda's and Toyota's. To keep the maintenance fees down, we hoped we could rely on his continued service instead of paying the usually elevated prices from the car dealer's mechanics shops and this was also a determining factor for my car purchase.

Example Discussions

'

• Not an Acceptable Response:

• Hello Everyone,

• My product would be Quaker Oats Oatmeal. My packaging would be new and old. I could appeal to the older generations by using pictures and slogans they remember. I’ll sale! Sale! Sale! I would do anything to sale the product and make the motnh’s quota.

• Acceptable Peer to Peer Comments:1) “Hi P., I think this is a great idea but too much health stuff can be a turn off. I

know your target audience is mothers for their kids but you don't want to limit your product sells you don't want that person in the store shopping for snacks to look over you Granola Bars. I guess if you make sure the picture on the front of the packaging is appealing this would definitely work.”

2) “This is interesting R. I would have not thought of making a connection between the target audience and the sale scheme used by the store, to me they seem to be independent variables, but after reading your post I can see a plausible connection. What made you think of incorporating the sale scheme into the discussion?”

• Not Acceptable Peer to Peer comments:1) “I Agree.”

2) “I Disagree.”

3) “ I love shopping, which store do you like to go when you go to the mall?

4) “I’m celebrating Today.. I had a good day!!”

5) “I agree she had a healthy dinner and was able to stretch her dollar.”

Let’s Review: Final Projects

• Retail Store Manager Interview

• Select early on a store you would like to learn more about.• Contact the manager in the first few weeks of the course and arrange for a

meeting. • Tip: arrange for an initial meeting, where you discuss the project, then schedule a

time/date for the interview, for a store evaluation and a follow up meeting to discuss any follow up questions.

• Ideally this would be done on separate days, so you have time to digest the information – but do your best with your own time constrains and those of the manager.

• Tip: small shops might have more time to give you.

• As soon as you have decided on a store and have a meeting in place with the manager, let me know.

• The projects will require research, application, and creativity as well as analysis

• Jump to Unit 9 check out the questions and feel free to start.
