3 Levels of Planning

There are 3 levels of management (top, middle, and frontline).

• The 3 levels of planning that correspond to each are: - Strategic (top-level)

- Tactical (middle-level)

- Operational (front-line level)

Strategic Vision

Note: Vision Statements describe what the business is trying to become in the future; where it sees itself becoming in the future.

For example: Redmond, WA’s vision statement is: “Together we create a community of good neighbors.”

Strategic Planning

…involves making decisions about the organization’s long-term goals and strategies.

Senior Executives (top level managers) are responsible for the development and execution of the business’ strategic plan.

Tactical Planning

…translates the strategic goals into specific goals and plans related to carrying the strategy out using the various departments of the business.

Middle managers generally are responsible for the development, communication, and execution of tactical planning.

Operational Planning

…identifies the specific procedures and processes required at lower levels of the organization.

Frontline managers usually focus on carrying out the day-to-day, routine tasks necessary to meet these functions.

• The end the result the manager seeks. These must be:

- Specific - Measurable- Attainable- Relevant- Time-bound

SWOT Analysis

• The SWOT Analysis is a useful strategic planning tool. It allows the user to visualize the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats facing the business.

Discussion Question

• Discussion Board: You are introduced as part of your reading assignment to the business case study, Sandwich Blitz, Inc. which we will continue to consider at various times throughout this course.

• Refer back to the description of the company and to your reading on “Levels of Planning”

• After completing the readings, in your judgment, what are some considerations that Dalman and Lei must have at each of the three levels (strategic, tactical, and operational) of planning for Sandwich Blitz, Inc?

• Be sure to address each of the three levels.

After reading the scenario about Dalman and Lei and the readings for Unit 3, what do you think are the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT) that the business faces if Dalman and Lei commit to a large-scale expansion of their business?

Be sure to identify at least one strength, one weakness, one opportunity, and one threat that apply to the scenario.

Organizing Introduction

In Unit 4, we are considering:

That organizing is one of the primary functions of management.

 That organizational structures have vertical and horizontal

dimensions, each having unique characteristics.

That the organization chart depicts the positions in the organization

and the way they are arranged.

 That delegation is a fundamental feature of management at every

level of management.

Differentiation and Integration

• Think of an organization that you are familiar with. Think of the way work processes are usually handled within the business.

• Are the main tasks in the workplace divided/routed to the various departments in the business

Or• Do individuals from various departments across the business work according to projects or the particular situation at hand?

Differentiation = Division of Labor

• Examples are: marketing, human resources, finance, information technology, or other departmental name. Can you name some departments in businesses that you are familiar with?

Integration = Coordination for Projects

• Communication is cooperation is required to get the desired results, even in a differentiated structure.

• Integration is that part of the business that provide and encourages linkages among the various functional areas to get the optimal results for a work project.

Span of Control • What is meant by Span of Control?

• “Balance” is very important when making management decisions regarding span of control…the span should be appropriate for the type of work and workers involved and for the skill level of the manager involved.

• Which work environment do (or would) you prefer?

• Which work environment do you think that you’d perform more effectively in?

Centralized and Decentralized Organizations

Do you recall a few years ago when many middle-managers were losing their jobs due to “decentralization”?

What is decentralization?

• Discussion Board Assignment: Delegation is the assignment of new or additional responsibilities to a subordinate. When done correctly, the individuals involved know exactly what they are to do, and the chances for success are maximized. Refer to the unit readings on delegation.

Pick a job or position (paid or unpaid) that you have held in which you delegated to others or had responsibilities delegated to you.

Describe your experience with delegation in terms of what went well and why, or what did not go as expected.

What could have improved the chances of a successful outcome in that particular situation?

3. Who within the company should make these decisions?

4. List the levels of authority (management) that Sandwich Blitz, Inc. would have if the new position is created.
