TTTTThe 4-day October IT Retreatwas held in Hall 85 of Shantivan.It drew 80+ participants from 16countries.

The first day consisted primarilyof meetings with RTCs. Registra-tion took place in the afternoonand there was an Iwebsitebriefing session in the evening.

The next two days were devotedto project-specific sessions. Amajor focus was the Iwebsitecountry model. Various aspects ofthe model were presented(content, design, HTML & Plone,Editorial Interface, RegistrationSystem). Then the groupsubdivided country-wise and,with the help of Iwebsite teammembers, initiated the process of

understanding how to re-developtheir country site within theinternational framework.

As in previous retreats, an ITMarketplace displaying manyglobal IT projects was heldduring the afternoons so thatcentre coordinators and otherinterested Baba’s children could getfirst-hand experience of how theseprojects will aid serviceefficiency and expansion.

Highlights of the retreatincluded visits by Sr. Mohini,Karunabhai and Dadi Janki.Everyone also appreciated Br.Yashawant’s making theimpossible possible by providingneeded technical facilities and Br.Shantanu’s attention to providing

cool and delicious refreshments.Perhaps you can catch the flavorof dedication and enthusiasm thatpermeated the retreat through thephotos below and on the nextpages, supplied by Br. Florian ofSydney.

A number of enhancements havebeen made to the Internationalwebsite. Of major interest to mostof you is the activation of the‘News and Media’ section, wherevarious ‘gyani’ articles arecontinually being uploaded.Another main focus has been thetranslation of the entire site intovarious languages. Currently 6languages are live and 5 othertranslators are in the process ofuploading their translated text.

A major milestone occurred inearly August 2006 when the UKwebsite went live (please seescreen shot opposite andhttp://www.bkwsu.org/uk).Adopting the branding andstandardisation parameters of theInternational site whilesporting its own unique design, itestablished the framework fordevelopment of all other countrylevel websites. The advantages ofother countries using the sameframework are that overalldevelopment and maintenancetime are reduced, and above all,common content is able to be

This auspicious event took placeon the 21st January, 2007 atHarmony House, Bangsar, KualaLumpur. Br. Karuna of Madhubanhad been especially invited for thelaunch, which was witnessed bymore than 200 of Baba’s children.

The model is already facilitatingrapid development of otherofficial BKWSU country websites.The first country to rise to thechallenge of re-developing theirwebsite according to the modelwas Malaysia (next article). Thecreation of the new Malaysianwebsite was invaluable inhighlighting areas of the modelthat needed fine tuning to makeit even more portable. At this point15 other countries are racing toadopt the model, so by the nextissue of CONNECTIONS there willdefinitely be more news in thisarea.

Understanding and appreciatingthe difference in the requirementsof retreat centre websites, theteam worked closely with PeaceVillage to create their newwebsite, which launched on 18th

January, 2007 (please visitwww.peacevillage.com). As withcountry websites, the PeaceVillage website is a model thatdefines the standards that allother retreat centres will follow.Though the designs of thevarious retreat sites will likely bequite different, the backendengine and interface will be thesame. The new system has increasedsecurity and allows authorisationfor Murli access to happen at aregional level, rather than throughLondon. In addition it will provideseparate downloads for suchthings as blessings and slogans,Murli notices, address lists etc.

A Murli notice was included in theMurli pack dated 26/02/07-04/03/07. It stated that the old Murlisystem will be closed down by theend of April 2007, by which timecentres will need to have movedonto the new system and be fullyfunctional. Invitations to registerfor access to the new system willsoon be sent to centres not yet reg-istered. They will be encouragedto register immediately and beginusing the new system as soon aspossible, so that the team canensure that all minor issues aresorted out by the end of April andthe transition is as smooth aspossible.

TheYagya has saved thousands ofdollars in communication costssince adopting this technology in2005. Recently over 100 VoIP unitswere disbursed to every regionduring the October IT meeting,bringing to over 800 the numberof locations that can be reachedvia VoIP. These include all threecampuses in Madhuban, all RCOsand most NCOs. A VoIP interna-tional phone directory can befound at www.bkinfo.net/VoIP.

Henceforth, individual regions willbe responsible for acquiring newVoIP units. Our standardHandytone ATA-286 model iswidely available via internetretailers and eBay in mostregions. Requirements havebeen gathered from all thestakeholders and design is inprogress. The project will be imple-mented on a new platform called‘Ruby on Rails’. The proof ofconcept for the project has beencompleted and will be demo’dduring the IT meeting in March.

A preliminary study was done for10 departments as part of aneffort to gather IT requirements forMadhuban. The report has beensubmitted to the RCOs andMadhuban senior brothers for theirfeedback and will be discussedduring the IT meeting in March.

New Project

The Human GrThe Human GrThe Human GrThe Human GrThe Human Greatness Preatness Preatness Preatness Preatness Projectojectojectojectoject“Celebrating Human Greatness” is an initiative to commemorate the Brahma Kumaris’ 30th anniversary inthe USA. The intention of this initiative is to introduce the 50 largest USA cities to the BKs. The approachbeing taken is to gather groups of community leaders in selected cities and engage them in to reflecting onthe intrinsic qualities that make up human greatness and in conversing about moments of greatness in theirlives.

The initiative was launched on January 25th in New Orleans, the city devastated in August 2005 byhurricane Katrina. The storm reduced the population of the city (nearly half a million) by 50%. Thecountless stories of individuals who emerged their greatness to help restore the community made NewOrleans a fitting place for the project’s first two events. Both were wonderful successes, generating greatappreciation and interest on the part of New Orleans residents, and enthusiasm in the BK family to continueservice there.

Members of the USA IT team are playing a big part in the project. Webcasts of the launch events drew 90connections over two days. The team plans webcasts for all the events as they occur over the next year, andare also looking to implement some of the latest social software technology on the website.

Spyware has proliferated acrossconsumers’ computers to thepoint that it is the number onecause of complaints at technicalsupport centres for computermanufacturers. The spywareproblem is spreading quickly tothe enterprise level, consuminghundreds of hours of work by ITstaff members to find and removeit.

At this level, spyware intrusionhas the ability to causedamage that is exponentiallygreater. Identity theft at a personallevel is bad. But theft ofcorporate data and IP bandwidthcan devastate a company.

But the options to fight it are few.“There is a very limited numberof anti-spyware products aimed

exclusively at enterprise needs,”Webroot’s CEO David Moll toldTechNewsWorld.

Given the number of work-stations in an enterprise setting,dealing with the side effects ofspyware poses monumentalproblems. The number one causeof system crashes is spyware,Moss said. The computinghabits of employees result in thecontinual introduction of spywareto corporate networks.

Finding all the places on a harddrive where spyware hides is time-consuming. Virus infections aremuch more focused. As Webroot’s Moll sees it, spywareis to the Internet as spam is toe-mail. “Spyware is not about to goaway soon. The financial market isbacking it,” Moll said. “It is gettingout of control.”

The spyware problem is gaining onenterprise users because thecorporate workplace is slow torespond, Moll concluded. “It willtake us a while to see the spreadof spyware in the wild start to slowdown,” he said.

The release in June of anenterprise version of Webroot’sSpy Sweeper offers ITdepartments a way to fight back.The new product’s client-serverarchitecture provides centralizedIT control with desktop agents thatsweep for devious andmalicious digital spies anderadicate them.

According to Moll, Spy SweeperEnterprise enables corporations todetect and manage all forms ofspyware. Spy Sweeper Enterprisehelps companies mitigatespyware-related security risks,reduce mounting support requestsand reestablish computing andnetwork performance.

“It is no longer time- or cost-efficient to install anti-spywareproducts on individual computersin a corporate environment,” LeeKennedy, vice president ofenterprise operations at Webroot,said in a prepared statement. “Itis increasingly important toprovide centralized protectionfrom spyware before it has achance to harm corporateenvironments and compromisenetwork security.”

A simple and secure way ofprotecting passwords is to usepass-phrases or encryptedpasswords and never write downthe actual password. A simple wayof encrypting a l la l la l la l la l l yourpersonal details (Bank Accountdetails, passwords, etc.) is asfollows:

2. Substitute a letter for your bankpin-code and save that as thewritten reminder. In otherwords, if your code = 2438, thesubstitution, based on the codeword above would be ‘iaks’.
