Our Challenge One challenge we all have in common… How do we “engage an unengaged group?”

Have you ever had this

student in

class?

Why is engagement so challenging? Innovation can be unsettling Lack of time Content coverage milestones Access to technology Participant resistance Others?

Rules….Watch/Listen/Brainstorm Each team will come up on stage

Short scenario video You will have 2 minutes to huddle and brainstorm solutions

Audience will do the same

Share/Shout Teams will then share their top solutions

After that, the audience will have time to “shout out” their ideas

At the end, we’ll share some ideas from the Instructional Innovation Committee

Hold on a second…You should employ a

strategy here!

Since people hate to come up on stage, you should

give one group a “GET OFF THE STAGE FREE CARD”

Technique: Gamification (also helps to save time)

GET OFF THE STAGE

FREE CARD

What the squirrel wants – the squirrel gets!

One team will win a “GET OFF THE STAGE FREE CARD” card

Let’s pick the winner…

The First “BIG Test:You’ve recently worked very hard to redesign your course.

You’re excited. You feel like your students are really getting it! Before long, it’s big test time. Your students arrive and take

the exam. After the exam, you’re feeling great. But soon, you realize…there is a problem. After grading the test, you realize

that over half of your students failed. What do you do?

Page 19: Welcome to Innovation Possible! (Please make sure you get a sticky tab…) Watch out for me and my Tips and Trick s !

M i s s i o n : I n n o v a t i o n Po s s i b l e !

What did the Instructional Innovation Committee think?

I would: Analyze results Compare with what I did in class Verify test items Discuss results with students / get their perspective Make plan for revising student grades - likely another test to allow students to

show they met objectives.

This is a great learning opportunity for both students and instructors. I would first discuss the issue with my students and reassure them that tests

are not meant to "fail" students; tests are meant to assess learning. Offer what is called Error Analysis. In this process, students are given their tests back and allowed to use their

notes and textbooks to redo the incorrect questions. Ultimately would lead to a redesign / retest.

Singing with the Social Media Blues….You’ve recently planned a virtual fieldtrip for your students. As part of the

experience, you incorporated several technology-based active and collaborative activities. The feedback from your class was overwhelmingly positive. You feel

like you’ve “Nailed it!” You’re excited! You can’t wait to design the next activity…but all is not perfect. The following week, you notice a social media post from one of your students. It says, “My instructors at Delaware Tech are

such dorks. They totally don’t get me. You can’t imagine the dumb things they make us do. #seriously???” The wind has been taken out of your sails…

What do you do?

Page 22: Welcome to Innovation Possible! (Please make sure you get a sticky tab…) Watch out for me and my Tips and Trick s !

M i s s i o n : I n n o v a t i o n Po s s i b l e !

What did the Instructional Innovation Committee think?Don't feed the trolls! Seriously!

I wouldn't sweat a lone negative comment if the feedback from most of the class was very positive.

If I felt a need to follow-up with the student, I definitely would NOT do so on social media.

Whenever the wind gets taken out of my sails, I try to remind myself of all the good I do for students.

Hmmm...I'm not sure you address it. If it is overwhelmingly positive, then you can chalk it up to not everyone is going to love everything you do.

Don’t panic! Have patience and confidence in your ability!

One more day….For better or for worse, your semester has been extended by one day. So, you’ve gone one last chance to develop one last

innovative instructional experience to help your students understand a REALLY difficult concept. In other words, if you

had one more day to teach… What do you do?

Page 25: Welcome to Innovation Possible! (Please make sure you get a sticky tab…) Watch out for me and my Tips and Trick s !

M i s s i o n : I n n o v a t i o n Po s s i b l e !

What did the Instructional Innovation Committee think?

I would take them on a field trip “Apply" what they have learned and see it in action. Get them excited about the skills they have acquired!

Come up with a creative way to engage students intellectually and physically.

Perhaps a big role play or some kind of authentic practice that can be fun and deeply absorbing.

Pull in creative energies through arts and performance aspects of the activity. (Gets another part of the brain working.)

Ask the students what they want me to learn!!!!

Debriefing the mission…

Was this a “breadth” or “depth” exercise? Blood pumping exercise Spin on the classic “think/pair/share” Time-friendly - Can be done in one class

or over multiple classes Elements of gaming, competition, and

chance
