American Pageant remains the market leader in AP US history for a

variety of reasons:

1) The Main reason why it continues to be number one choice for AP is

because of its accessibility. The action oriented and humorous

writing style keeps students interested in the reading.

2) The text has a strong political focus but with newer editions

increasingly integrates social history to better follow criteria of the

AP exam

3) Extensive AP in-text features and AP Ancillary support helps both

teachers and students make the transition to the college-level work

of an AP course

The Distinctive writing style is action-oriented with both humor

and “drama” to convey the story and engage students in the

material. Here are some notable examples from the textbook.

“Examining the Evidence” is a historiographical feature that presents a

photograph, artifact, or brief document and demonstrates how

historians analyze such evidence. It then prompts students to draw their

own conclusions. •“Conflicting Press Accounts of the March on Washington, 1963” (p. 983)

Page 5: Welcome to Holt McDougal’s AP US History presentation of the 2010 AP … ·  · 2016-02-16American Pageant remains the market leader in AP US history for a ... AP* U.S. History

“Varying Viewpoints” are overviews of the scholarly debates

surrounding major historical issues that encourage students to think

critically about disagreements among historians. These one- to two-

page essays appear at the end of approximately half the chapters and

synthesize the latest research. Topics: Colonial America, Constitution, Jacksonian Democracy, Reconstruction, Was the West Really

Won?

•“How Radical was the New Deal?” (p.851)

Another important feature of the program is that we continue to keep up

with changes in the course description by offering more social coverage

with the additon of Elizabeth Cohen to the author team, a social-cultural

historian. “Makers of America” focus on the diverse ethnic, racial, and

activist groups that compose America’s pluralistic society and show how

different social groups impacted our nation’s history. More attention had

been given to the experiences and contributions of women, law, and the

national economy in the antebellum period.

• Examples of these groups are the Californios and Environmentalist

groups and The Chinese (p. 550)

NEW Global focus feature.

•Twelve new “ Thinking Globally” essays, two within each of the

Pageant’s six parts, present different aspects of the American

experience contextualized within world history.

•Readers learn how developments in North America were part of

worldwide phenomena, be it the challenge to empire in the eighteenth

century, the rise of socialist ideology in the nineteenth century, or the

globalization that followed World War II.

•The Era of Globalization (p. 924)
