ATTENDANCE: Geometry covers a considerable amount of material. Please note the following:

•Attendance is very important. If you are absent on a day of a new lesson, you are responsible for making up the notes and homework before the chapter test. If you are absent on a review day, you are expected to do the review on your own and take the test on test day.•If you are absent on a test day you must make it up BEFORE the day of the next test on your own time (during after school tutorial or during a free block). This is your responsibility to schedule a time to make up a missed test with your teacher.

DAILY HOMEWORK:

•Homework will be collected daily. It is graded for completeness and accuracy. It must be complete AND every problem correct to receive full credit. Late work will not be accepted.

•Absent work is due the day of the test. No work will be accepted after the chapter test.

WARM-UPS:

•After a lesson, students will complete a warm-up with their group. If you are absent or late you cannot make up the quiz or warm-up. At the end of the quarter, the 3 lowest warm-up scores will be dropped.

•Only one will be selected from the group to be graded. Each student will receive the score of the one that is graded.

TESTS:

• Tests cover new material and review material. It is important to make sure you are staying on top of the material.

Welcome to Geometry! Geo means Earth (geography is mapping the Earth, for example) and metry means measurement. Geometry applies the arithmetic, algebra and reasoning skills you have learned to the objects you see all around you. During this course, you will ask and answer questions such as “How can I describe this shape?”, “How can I measure this shape?”, “Is this shape symmetrical?”, and “How can I convince others that what I think about this shape is true?”

This chapter begins with some activities that will introduce you to the big ideas of the course. Then you will apply motions to triangles and learn how to specify a particular motion. Finally, you will explore attributes of shapes that can be used to categorize and name them and find the probabilities of selecting shapes with certain properties from a “shape bucket.”

In this chapter, you will:become familiar with basic geometric shapes and learn how to describe each one using its attributes, such as line or rotation symmetry.investigate three basic rigid transformations: reflection (flip), rotation (turn), and translation (slide).

1.1 – How Can You Use Algebra?______________Using Algebra to learn Geometry

Geometry requires a certain amount of Algebra knowledge. Today you will be reviewing things you know about algebra. Some ideas are combined with geometry. Work with your team to complete the following tasks.

1.1 – SOLVING VARIABLESWhen solving an equation, start with distribution. Then combine like terms on each side of the equal sign. Afterwards, get the variable on one side of the equal sign, undo any addition, subtraction. Then undo any multiplication or division.

A square root is when you find what number, squared, equals that result. For example However, sometimes the number isn't a "perfect" square. This is when you use a factor tree to simplify the square root. To do this find what numbers multiply to get the answer. Then circle the pairs.
