What is Communication? What is Communication? For communication to be successful, we must be sure that the message has the same meaning for the receiver as it did for the sender. To check if a message is understood, we can request FEEDBACK (asking person to repeat, questioning).

Every communication process follows the same series of steps.

Page 9: Welcome to Communications Technology …quite possibly the coolest course you’ll take in high school! 1a What is Communication.ppt.

The Communication The Communication ProcessProcess1. A way of ENCODING the message

(eg. video camera, microphone, computer keyboard).

2. A means of TRANSMITTING the message (eg. Recording head, radio antenna, computer modem).

3. A CHANNEL or route which the message takes (videotape, air, phone lines).

The Communication The Communication ProcessProcess

All messages are designed to reach a specific AUDIENCE.

Ex. 1 – An ad for retirement planning probably won’t work well in a magazine for Canadian teens.Ex. 2 – Loud hip-hop music may be effective for a soft drink ad that appears on Much Music, but it wouldn’t be very useful for an insurance ad during “60 Minutes”.

We need to consider audience and cost when designing any form of communication. Effective communication requires:

1. planning2. organization 3. analysis.
