copy!

Chemistry has been revised completely since last year.

I listened to some of

the complaints from the

students and fixed things. This class can be hard

but it can be fun too.

Students: If you find yourself

having trouble, or falling

behind, you want to deal with

that immediately. Chemistry isn’t a course that

you can “catch up in” very

easily. I stay after school for

tutoring/extra help Tuesday

through Thursdays from 2:45

until 4 (sorry, not Mondays or

Friday). You can always get

one-on-one help after school.

You can even come just to do

homework or study. You can

come for help during JAYEM

AM.

You can expect one or more

test or quiz EVERY week.

If you work a little every

day (30 minutes studying

after you do your homework) you will be

more successful than if you

cram the night before the

test. Every Unit Test will FOCUS

on new material from that

unit, but also include

important concepts from

previous units!

Tests are worth 50% of your overall

grade. Quizzes are worth 15% of your

grade. Quizzes are worth a maximum of 25

points! I generally drop the lowest quiz grade

of each quarter The SOL is your final exam.

The midterm and SOL are very

important and should be taken

seriously.  New for 2015-16: There is no curve

for Adv Chem.  Curve for Chem = 10

points max. You can use a 3x5 index card on

SOME tests.

EXTRA TIME ON TESTS:

Some students are officially allowed

extra time on tests and assignments.

I don’t allow extra time on tests.

Please don’t ask. Get it done in the

time you have available.

If you have a legitimate problem on

test day, please talk to me BEFORE

the test starts and I will try my best to

help you out. Makeup Tests: If you are absent the day I give a test,

you must make it up after school the

day you return, in accordance with

school policies. Failure to make up

the test timely will result in a grade of

0.

Lab W

ork

Chemistry is a

laboratory science. We

will do 3-4 labs per

quarter.

Students must

purchase a bound,

composition style

notebook for a lab

notebook.

Students do work as

part of a group BUT to

must record all data and

observations directly in

their OWN lab

notebook.

Written lab reports

are to be each

student’s own work.

Homework will be assigned

frequently (not every day;

more in Adv Chem). Homework is ALWAYS due

the next class day after it is

assigned, unless I tell you in

class. READING THE SECTIONS in

the chapters are considered

to be homework. This is Chemistry. Don’t do

HW or study for other classes

in my class. It won’t help

your grade in my class.

Homework will primarily be

graded on a completion basis,

and it is due at the start of

class for full credit. Put it in

the “Turn In Bin” before the

BELL RINGS!! Almost every homework

assignment will have a portion

graded for correctness.

We will discuss and work out

difficult homework problems during

the first part of every class, if you

ask a question. Homework turned in on time and

complete will almost always

receive a grade of 100 AND at

least a grade of 80.

Rule 1: Come to class

prepared. Bring book, notebook, calculator,

periodic table, pen, pencil, etc

EVERY DAY. I don’t write passes to go to your

locker and get stuff. Bring it with

you. Rule 2: When I am talking,

you are listening and taking

notes. I like to have fun too, but let’s get

our work done FIRST Texting is not allowed at any time in

my class. If we get done and have time

left over at the end of class, I’ll

let you talk then. I promise.

Rule 3: No CHEATING or copying

assignments, EVER.

The person copying AND the person who

allowed their paper to be copied with

BOTH get 0.

Asking someone for an answer on a HW

problem is cheating.

Helping someone learn how to work the

problem helps BOTH of you.

Dividing up the problems and then

exchanging the answers is cheating.

Rule 4: No eating in class!

This is a Chemistry lab in addition to a

classroom. Do not bring breakfast or cups that can

spill to my room first period. You may

have bottles of water.

Do not bring back food from lunch during

third period. You may chew gum provided I don’t see or

hear bubbles being blown and/or popped.

Rule 5: If you miss work, it is your

responsibility to make it up.

Come and see me before or after school to get

your missed assignments (NOT 2 seconds before

the bell rings).

Check the blog also for missed assignments,

because I’m going to post them there.

Come after school to get help as soon as you get

back. Rule 6: Treat everyone in this room, with the

respect that you would like to be treated with.

That includes Mr. Schwartz, and especially subs

throughout the year, your classmates AND the

chemicals and equipment in this room.

Rule 7: Lab work is NOT playtime, and people

can get hurt in lab.

Accidents can and will happen, and we have

procedures to deal with that.

You will never get in trouble for having an

accident or breaking something accidentally.

However, if you are intentionally behaving in an

unsafe manner, I will ask you to stop or remove

you from lab and you will get a DR.

Rule 8: Passes to get out of class will

require your agenda.

No agenda. No pass.

I will write a maximum of 2 passes for you

during any week (1 for A/B classes).

No passes will be written for any reason

during the first or last 10 minutes of each

class. Rule 9: I do mark tardies when you are late.

Tardy is defined, by me, as being outside Room

225 after the bell has rung.

Be ready to work once the bell has rung.

Get your notes out and something to write

with, turn in any homework, get quiet and let’s

go. Rule 10: All other school rules and

policies apply in Chemistry class.

Including cell phones.

Keep them off, and out of sight during

class. I love my cell phone too. I just don’t use

it during class.

You solve problems every day. Just today, you figured

out what to wear and

how to find Room 225.

You determined who to

sit next to. Problems aren’t complicated but none

of these involved Chemistry or Math.

Many problems in Chemistry give you data to use in the calculations or a graph

to chart to find data. But to solve any

problem you have to: Develop a plan Implement that plan

Page 26: Welcome to Chemistry Syllabus, Policies, Procedures Section 1.4.

Solv

ing N

um

eri

c Pr

3 steps: Step 1 Analyze: this step is to

develop your plan. It

should take the most time.

What is known? What are you solving for?

Do you need a formula?

Do you know any other facts

which can help you solve the

problem? Do this on paper with pencil.

NOT in your head! That’s

where the mistakes happen!

Page 27: Welcome to Chemistry Syllabus, Policies, Procedures Section 1.4.

Solv

ing N

um

eri

c Pr

oble

3 steps: Step 2 Calculate: this step is to

implement your plan. This is when

you finally pick up your calculator.

It should take the least time.

If you planned well, you will

probably have a rough idea of the

answer before you begin to punch

numbers into the calculator.

Most students start by picking up

their calculator. On the SOL, sometimes you can

just do random calculations until

you happen to get the right

multiple choice answer.

What if there aren’t choices? Then

what?

Page 28: Welcome to Chemistry Syllabus, Policies, Procedures Section 1.4.

3 steps: Step 3 Evaluate: does your answer

make any sense? Is it reasonable? Get over the “weird numbers!”

1.23589876E23 isn’t weird.

0.000004367 isn’t weird.

Π is a little weird i is kind of weird too

We aren’t always going to get 2 or

5 or ½ or 0.25 in this class.

There are an infinite number of

REAL numbers and we might get

any of them. If you think the answer might be

wrong, do it again to double check!

First step is to plan. I’m going to first gather

data from the sample

problem: 1 mile = 10 blocks. 1 mile = 20 minutes.

Question: how long will it

take to go to and from

the store which is 6 blocks away? How long

means I am solving for

minutes.

Think: I’m still planning!

6 blocks to and 6 blocks

from = 12 total blocks.

1 mile = 10 blocks and 1

mile = 20 min, so 10 blocks = 20 min or

20 min = 10 blocks

I think I’ve got it. Looks

like it takes about 2 minutes to walk 1 block

and 12 blocks should =

24 minutes.

Now I will calculate! It’s on Step 2

20 min = 10 blocks is a conversion

factor, which I can write as a

fraction

20 min-----------

10 blocks So

12 blocks x 20 min-----------= 24 min

10 blocks The units of blocks cancel each

other out, since one is in the

numerator and the other is in the

demoninator, leaving minutes as

the only unit not cancelled out.

Evaluate the answer. Does it make sense? Well, I sort of figured my answer would

be around 24 min, and it is.

Did I calculate it right? Well, I used the right conversion factor,

and the units cancelled out

appropriately. Does my answer have the correct

units? The cool part about the framework is

when the units in the numerator are

the same as the units you are looking

for, the problem is done, and done

correctly.
