Welcome to Back-to-School Night

INSTRUCTION  A  few  highlights.  .  .    •  DifferenBaBon  •  Flipped  Classroom  •  STEM  lessons      

Math  

•  Students  will  be  challenged  at  their  math  level.  – All  classes  will  use  enrichment  materials  and  differen2a2on    

– Students  need  to  con2nue  to  prac2ce  their  mul2plica2on  facts  at  home.  (Reflex)  

– Math  homework  given  most  nights  (Monday  –  Thursday)  and  the  homework  for  the  week  is  given  on  Mondays  to  be  due  on  Fridays  

Science  •  We  will  use  many  hands-­‐on  experiments  and  group  work,  as  well  as  the  integraBon  of  Science  into  other  subject  areas.  

•  Some  topics  that  will  be  covered:      –  Scien2fic  Inves2ga2on        –  Planets  in  the  Solar  System  –  Ecosystems  –  Metric  Measurement  –  Weather  –  Force,  Mo2on,  Energy  –  Electricity  and  Magne2sm  –  Virginia  Resources  

Social  Studies  Virginia  Studies  

•  Geography  •  Economics  •  Wars:  Revolu2onary,  Civil  •  Famous  Virginians  

WriBng  •  Fine  tune  the  use  of  paragraphs  •  Con2nue  to  work  on  gramma2cal  skills  •  Students  will  write  cri2cally  across  all  subject  

areas  •  Spelling  –  Words  Their  Way  –  meet  the  student  

at  their  spelling  level.    Word  Study  work  for  the  week  

•  Assessments  will  occur  every  3-­‐4  on  a    group  of  words,  not  weekly  

Reading  

•  Focus:  TO  ENJOY  READING!  •  Have  your  child  read  20  minutes  every  night  •  Reading  and  all  other  subjects  will  be  integrated  •  Online  program  to  log  books:  Biblionasium  

Classroom  Management  

ü School-­‐wide  Posi2ve  Behavior  Support  (PBIS)  ü Classroom  Behavior  Plans  ü School-­‐wide  behaviors  ü Posters,  paw  signs,  “shhhhh…Lion”  ü An engaged student = a well-behaved student

Homework  and  Graded  Papers  ü No  more  than  60  minutes  of  homework  per  night,  this  includes  20  minutes  of  reading.  

ü Agendas  will  be  filled  out  daily  and  should  be  checked  by  you  nightly.  

ü Friday  Folders  go  home  weekly,  envelope  needs  to  be  signed  by  you.  All  graded  papers  go  in  the  folder.  

ü Weekly  emails  are  sent  home.  ü Homework  is  posted  on  my  website  weekly
