Preparing for College:Grades and GPA

•Junior year is CRITICAL.

•This is the last opportunity for students to boost their grades for college eligibility (Senior year GPA DOES NOT COUNT!!!) Summer School @end of 11th grade COUNTS!

•Students intent on applying to UC’s must have 11 of their A-G requirements (Core classes) completed WITH a C of BETTER by the end of 11th grade.

•CSU’s require you to have all A-G requirements completed by the end of 12th grade, BUT they will only use the GPA that students have accrued by the end of Junior year

•Students with a 3.0 or better (A-G classes) DO NOT HAVE THEIR TEST SCORES COUNTED (SAT/ACT) when applying to CSU’s

Preparing for College:College Entrance Tests

Most 4-year colleges and universities require:

• SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test) - or the ACT (American College Test)

• Some colleges also require or recommend the SAT subject tests

AVID STUDENTS SHOULD BE TAKING SAT/ACT at LEAST TWICE (potentially 3 times):

- SAT taken first time in Spring 2016- SAT/ACT taken again BEGINNING of September

2016- Depending on scores, SAT/ACT taken one more time

OCT 2016

Preparing for College:College Entrance Tests

UC’s-Certain Majors (Engineering/Science) suggest students take subject area tests WITH the SAT/ACT

This is NOT a SUGGESTION, it is a REQUIREMENT!!!

Students should be thinking about their majors and researching the testing requirements for different universities.

CSU’s- The SAT is broken into 3 separate tests- Reading, Writing, and Math. For students who take the SAT multiple times, CSU’s take the best score from each of these tests to compile the best composite score! (This is why we want students taking the test multiple times)

Preparing for College: Scholarships $$$

Facts:• College is expensive!!! $$$• Every year, millions of dollars in scholarships go unclaimed

because no student applied for them.• Students increase their eligibility for a scholarship by

applying to those that take time, thought and personalization to complete.

Opportunities / Requirements:• All AVID Juniors are required to apply to at least 2 essay-

based scholarships each semester. School week-long breaks a great opportunity of time for this.
