Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed
Virgin Mary December 8, 2016 (Holy Day of Obligation)
Hail Mary, Full of Grace, The Lord is with thee.
Blessed art though amongst women And blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God, Pray for us sinners,
Now and at the hour of our death.
Amen
My dear Parishioners,
On Thursday of this week, we will celebrate the Solemnity
of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
It is under this title that we honor our Blessed Mother as our
National Patroness. This year’s celebration occurs at an op-
portune time in the history of a nation torn and divided in
myriad ways. We need to come together to live in harmony
and peace with each other, and while that may seem as a far
off dream at the present time, the task must be taken up now
and carried on with patience and persistence until the goal is
achieved. But it will not come about through sheer human
effort. That’s why our observance of the Feast of the Im-
maculate Conception is so important this particular year; we
need to turn to Mary Immaculate, our heavenly Patroness for
her protection, guidance and intercession.
Living in such a secularist society, I doubt that many of us
ever think about the relationship we have as a nation with
God and the Blessed Mother. Every once in a while we may
be reminded that “In God We Trust,” and that is about as far
as it goes. As Catholic Christians we do pray regularly for
our nation. But how often do we think of ourselves as a na-
tion under the special protection of the Mother of God? One
hundred and seventy years ago, at the sixth Plenary Council
of Baltimore, the American bishops unanimously chose our
Blessed Lady, under the title of the Immaculate Conception,
as Patroness of the United States of America. In a letter ad-
dressed to the Catholics of this country, they wrote: “By the
aid of her prayers, we entertain the confident hope that we
will be strengthened to perform the arduous duties of our
ministry, and that you will be enabled to practice the sublime
virtues, of which her life presents the most perfect example.”
If ever there were a time calling for the practice of “the sub-
lime virtues,” it is now. On December 8th, as we honor our
Immaculate Mother Mary, our National Patroness, let us look
confidently to her for guidance, wisdom, and intercession
before her Divine Son. —Fr. Jerome, C.P.

Second Collection for Retired Religious
December 10-11: Thousands of senior sisters, brothers, and religious order priests spent years working in Catholic schools, hospitals, and agencies—often for little pay. Their sacri-fices leave their religious communities without adequate savings for retirement and eldercare. Your gift to the Retire-ment Fund for Religious collection next weekend helps pro-vide prescription medications, nursing care, and more. Please give to those who have given a lifetime.
Christmas is around the corner and this weekend we are displaying the Giving Tree as we do every year. The tree holds many snowflake ornaments bearing present requests, and the age and gender of those receiving the gifts. Please consider sponsoring a child and pick a
snowflake or two. The Giving Tree is being organized by The Saint Vincent De Paul Society here at Saint Paul of the Cross Catholic Church. Thank You!
¡MUCHAS GRACIAS!
Our Condolences to:
James Harris and family on the loss of his beloved wife,
Saundra Harris; who passed from this world on
November 27, 2016 .
Also, to Alicia Cruz and family on the recent death of her
grandfather, Sebastian Cruz.
May God provide both families the strength they need to cope with the loss of loved ones. Let us keep them all in our prayers.
A Big Thank You to Saint Paul of the Cross Medical Team Staff and parishioners for giving my mother, Addie Pitts; first response aid this past Sunday. She is doing much better and is
grateful to all of you. James Pitts
