What Happens in Mr. Miller’s Class• Children are

responsible to each other as well as to me.

• Children take action to insure that they can learn.

• There are only 3 Class Rules

1. Do Your Work 2. Let the children around you do their work 3. Let Mr. Miller do his work

• I will select Section Leaders to make sure this happens before I need to get involved.

• I get involved only when the children can’t solve the problem on their own.

What Happens in Mr. Miller’s Class• I see myself as a

“guide on the side”, Not a “sage on the stage”.

• Children sometimes take on the role of assistant teacher.

• There are different skill levels in this class, and different levels of natural ability.

• As an Ensemble, we help each other so that everyone contributes to our success.

• A child who understands a concept or has mastered a skill is given credit for helping a classmate understand it too.

What Happens in Mr. Miller’s Class• Children learn best

from natural consequences.

• Music is a team sport. Ultimately, we all succeed or fail together.

• You can tell a 12 year old to tie their shoes until you are blue in the face. They will learn to tie their shoes only when they trip in front of the cute girl during lunch.

• A child who does not practice, will not be able to perform with skill. The embarrassment from a public train wreck will teach more than any lecture I can give.

• As an ensemble, our skill level is judged together. Individual success can only be achieved when everyone in the ensemble pulls their weight.

What Happens in Mr. Miller’s Class• Children get many

chances to succeed.

• Missing assignments are severely graded.

• I don’t care if the children master the assignment on Tuesday or Thursday. As long as they master it they will get credit for it.

• All work is to be turned in to the “box by the door” when it is due. If the work shows mastery it will be returned with an “A” as long as it’s on time.

• I accept late work, but I reduce the grade as time passes.

• Any assignment can be redone and submitted for a higher grade if the child has attained deeper understanding and wishes to display it.

• Any test can be retaken for a higher grade.

• Because I accept late work, any work that is simply not turned in will be given a grade of “F”.

What Happens in Mr. Miller’s Class• Live performance

is the ultimate measure of success.

• We rely on each other to be successful.

• You will need to provide your child with the required concert attire

• We can not arrange for the audience and performance venue to make itself available when it’s more convenient for your child.

• Attendance at all performances are mandatory for every child. Everyone must find a way to get to the performance on time. We rely on each other to be a complete Ensemble.

• Concerts are worth 500 points.• Make-up written assignments are given

only in cases where I am informed of the conflict well in advance of the performance date.

• Make-up written assignments (worth 500 points) are sizable. (5-10 pages) Plagiarism is thrown away and no credit is given.
